This wikiHow teaches you how to install and use the TikTok app on your iPhone or iPad.
Step
Part 1 of 6: Installing TikTok
Step 1. Open the App Store
on your iPhone or iPad.
Usually, you can find this app icon on the home screen.
Step 2. Touch Search
It's a magnifying glass icon in the lower-right corner of the screen.
Step 3. Type Tik Tok into the search bar
A list of matching search results will be displayed.
Step 4. Touch Tik Tok - including musical.ly
This option is indicated by a black icon with a white musical note inside.
Step 5. Touch GET
The App Store menu will expand after that.
Step 6. Enter passcode or scan Touch ID to confirm
This step is not always mandatory for all users. TikTok will be downloaded and installed to your iPhone or iPad afterwards.
Part 2 of 6: Creating an Account
Step 1. Open TikTok
This app is marked by a black icon with a white musical note inside. Usually, you can find this icon on your device's home screen.
Step 2. Touch Create Account
If you already have an account, tap Log In and skip this segment
Step 3. Choose a registration method
You can create an account using phone number, email address, account Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or Google.
Step 4. Follow the on-screen instructions to create an account
The steps that need to be followed are different, depending on the previous selection. When you get to the page, “What's your birthday?”, move on to the next step.
If you select the social media option, you will be asked to log into the respective social media account and grant permission
Step 5. Determine the date of birth
Use the wheel to select the date, month and year of birth. After that, touch the right arrow icon to proceed to the next stage.
Part 3 of 6: Searching and Watching Videos
Step 1. Go to the TikTok feed page
This page is the main page of TikTok which contains a list of videos that you can browse. The feed list is the first page that is displayed when the app is opened.
If you're currently browsing another segment of TikTok, tap the home icon in the lower-left corner of the screen to return to the feed page
Step 2. Touch the Following tab
It's in the top-left corner of the feed page. You will be redirected to a page containing videos uploaded by users you follow.
Step 3. Touch the For You tab
It's in the top-right corner of the feed page. The videos shown are trending, suggested or popular content.
Step 4. Swipe up the page to browse the feed
Each time you scroll up the page, the next video in the feed will play automatically.
If you don't like one of the videos in the “For You” feed, touch and hold the screen until the broken heart icon is displayed, then select “ Not interested " You won't see videos like that again in the future.
Step 5. Touch the heart icon to like the video
It's on the right side of the video. The color of the heart icon will change to pink indicating that the video has been liked.
Step 6. Touch the chat bubble icon to leave a comment
Once touched, the comments that have been uploaded will also be displayed. To leave a comment, touch the column “ Say something nice… ”, type a message, then select “ Send ”.
Step 7. Share videos via other apps
You can share a TikTok video on other messaging apps or social media by tapping the “Share” icon in the bottom right corner of the video. Select an application that you want, or touch “ Copy Link ” to paste the video URL yourself into another app.
Step 8. Touch the magnifying glass icon to search for other videos
It's in the lower-left corner of the screen. On this page, you can browse various categories, view trending videos, or type your own search keywords in the search bar at the top of the screen.
Step 9. Search for a user or hashtag
Type what you are looking for in the search field at the top of the screen, then tap the “ Search ' on the keyboard.
Step 10. Touch the square speech bubble icon to view the notification
You'll receive new notifications when followers interact with your videos or upload new content.

Part 4 of 6: Looking for Users to Follow
Step 1. Follow the person shown on the feed page
If you find a video you like on your feed page and want to follow the user who uploaded it, tap their username in the bottom-left corner of the video (above the caption), then select Follow on their profile page.
Step 2. Search for someone by name
Follow these steps to find someone if you know their name:
- Touch the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the screen to display the search page.
- Touch " Search people, sounds, and tags ” at the top of the screen.
- Type in the person's name or username and touch the button “ Search ”.
- Touch the user's name or photo to open their profile page.
- Touch Follow.
Step 3. Follow the contacts on your iPhone or iPad
Follow these steps to find contacts who also have accounts and use TikTok:
- Tap the human icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
- Tap the human outline icon with the "+" symbol in the upper-left corner of the screen.
- Touch " Find Contact Friends " Contacts who use TikTok will appear on this page, with the words "Follow" next to them.
- Touch the Follow button next to the username to follow them.
- If the desired contact doesn't have a TikTok account, you can click the Invite button to invite them to use TikTok.
Step 4. Follow the contact from Facebook
Follow these steps to follow TikTok users who also use the social media platform Facebook:
- Tap the human icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
- Tap the human outline icon with the "+" symbol in the upper-left corner of the screen.
- Touch " Find Facebook Friends ”.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to log into your Facebook account.
- Allow TikTok to access the contact list on Facebook.
- Touch the Follow button next to the users you want to follow.
- If the user doesn't have a TikTok account, you can click the Invite button to invite them to use TikTok.
Part 5 of 6: Editing Profile
Step 1. Touch the profile icon
It's the human outline icon in the lower-right corner of the TikTok window. Your profile page will be displayed after that.
- On this page, you can also track the number of friends, followers and likes.
- Uploaded videos will be displayed at the bottom of the profile.
Step 2. Touch Edit Profile
It's a red button in the center of the screen.
Step 3. Add a new profile photo
You can add a new photo, use an existing photo, or even upload a profile video. Follow these steps to add a profile photo from photos already saved in the device gallery:
- Touch " Profile Photo ” at the top of the screen. The menu will expand afterwards.
- Choose " Select from library ”.
- Touch the album containing the desired photo.
- Touch the photo you want to use.
- Select the part of the photo you want to use by dragging the frame rectangle to the desired location.
- Touch " Choose ”.
Step 4. Change the username
Your profile can be recognized by the username on the TikTok app. To change it, tap the name next to the "Username" option, then type in a new username.
- You can only change your username once in 30 days.
- You can also change the display name whenever you want. This name is displayed at the top of the profile page.
Step 5. Add Instagram or YouTube account name
You can add both accounts if you want other TikTok users to visit your Instagram or YouTube profile.
Step 6. Add bio
Touch Bio ”, type in your bio or anything other users can know about you, then tap anywhere on your profile page to exit the bio section.
Step 7. Touch Save
It's in the upper-right corner of the screen.
Part 6 of 6: Recording Videos
Step 1. Touch +
It's in the bottom center of the screen.
Step 2. Click Pick a Sound at the top of the screen to search for the video soundtrack
There are two ways you can follow:
- Choose a category (eg. Hip Hop ”, “ Pop ”, “ Trending ”), browse the playlist, and touch the play button to hear sample songs.
- Type the song title or musician's name into the search bar at the top of the screen, then tap the “ Search " Browse the search results, then touch the play button to hear a sample song.
Step 3. Tap Shoot with this sound
This pink button is below the song. After that, the song will be selected and you will be taken to the video recording window.
Step 4. Touch the circular arrow icon to switch from one camera to another (optional)
With this icon, you can switch from the front camera (selfie) to the rear camera (regular), or vice versa.
Step 5. Touch the magic wand button to activate the beauty effect or “Beauty Effect” (optional)
This folder can beautify the appearance of skin color and texture directly.
Step 6. Touch the color filter icon to select a color or lighting filter (optional)
This icon looks like three colored circles on the right side of the screen. Browse the available options, then touch the filter you want to use.
Step 7. Touch the lens icon to select a face filter (optional)
These filters (known as face filters or masks) are located on the left side of the recorder's shutter button. With this filter, you can apply cute animated details to your face. Browse the options, then touch the filter to try it out. Once you find the option you like, simply touch any part of the camera window to close the filter list.
Step 8. Touch the scissors icon to trim the duration of the music (optional)
If you don't want the song you're using to play from the beginning, drag the sound wave at the bottom of the screen to the desired starting point, then tap the tick icon.
Step 9. Press and hold the record button
The video will be recorded as long as you hold down the button (or for 15 seconds-depending on the shorter duration).
- You can pause the recording by lifting your finger from the button. Hold down the button again to resume recording from the last point.
- You can shoot video in multiple segments if you don't want to shoot straight for 15 seconds.
- To record a video without holding down the shutter button, tap the timer icon on the left side of the screen instead of the shutter button. After that, touch " Start Countdown ”.
Step 10. Touch the tick icon at the bottom right corner of the screen when you're done recording
You will be taken to a new page to make some final edits.
Step 11. Use the provided icons to edit the video
These icons appear at the top and bottom of the screen.
- Touch the scissor icon to trim the video.
- Touch the slider switch at the top of the screen to adjust the volume of the music or video.
- Tap the album art or musician photo icon in the upper right corner of the screen to change the music used.
- Touch the clock icon in the lower left corner of the screen to try out the time machine effect.
- Touch the cover icon at the bottom of the screen to select a cover photo.
- Touch the tricolor icon at the bottom of the screen to change the color filter or lighting.
Step 12. Touch Next
It's in the lower-right corner of the screen. You will be taken to the " Post " page after that.
Step 13. Enter a title and hashtag
Touch the typing field at the top of the screen to include text on the video. You can use hashtags (#likethis) or tag friends (@likethis).
Step 14. Select the audience
By default, your videos can be watched by anyone (public). However, you can change the privacy settings. Touch " Who can view my video " and select " Private "if you want.
Step 15. Enable or disable the comment field
To let other users comment on your work, tap the " Comments " switch until it turns yellow. To turn off comments, touch the switch until it turns gray.
Step 16. Touch Post
It's a pink button in the lower-right corner of the screen. Your video will now be shared on TikTok.
