This wikiHow teaches you how to try to recover your Facebook account after it was accessed or hacked by someone else. The easiest way to recover your account is to change your password. If your password cannot be changed, you can report account abuse to Facebook.

Method 1 of 3: Reset Password Via Facebook Mobile App
Step 1. Open Facebook
This app is marked by a dark blue icon with a white “f” on it. The login page will be displayed if you are logged out of your account.

This link is below the email address and password fields. The menu will be displayed afterwards.

If you see the link “ Forgot Password?
” (“Forgot Password?”) on the page, skip this step.
Step 3. Touch Forgot Password?
(“Forgot Password?

This option is in the menu. Once selected, you will be taken to the Facebook password reset page.
Step 4. Enter your email address or phone number
Tap the field at the top of the page, then enter the email address or phone number you used to sign in to your account.
If you've never added a phone number to your account, you'll need to use an email address
Step 5. Touch Search (“Search”)
It's a blue button below the text field. Your Facebook account will be displayed after that.
Step 6. Choose a recovery method
Touch one of the recovery options at the top of the page:
- via email - Facebook will send a reset code to the email address registered with Facebook.
- via SMS - Facebook will send a reset code to the registered phone number.
Step 7. Touch Continue
It's a dark blue button below the account recovery options. Once clicked, Facebook will send the code via email or text message.
Step 8. Get the account code
This process will depend on the reset method you choose:
- Email – Open your email inbox, search for messages from Facebook, and note the six-digit code that appears in the subject line.
- SMS – Open the messaging app, search for a new message from a five- or six-digit number, and look for the six-digit code in the main body of the message.
Step 9. Enter the code
Tap the " Enter your six-digit code " field, then type in the six-digit code from an email or text message.
- Make sure you don't delay entering the code more than a few minutes after getting it. Otherwise, the code will not work.
- You can touch the option " Resend Code ” (“Resend Code”) to get a different code.
Step 10. Touch Continue
It's below the text field. The code will be entered and you will be taken to the next page.
Step 11. Check the "Log me out of other devices" box, then tap Continue
You will be logged out of your Facebook account stored on another computer, tablet, or phone. Automatically, hackers will be removed from your Facebook account which is accessed through their device.
Step 12. Enter the new password
Type the new password into the field at the top of the page.
Step 13. Touch Continue
The old password will be replaced by the new password. Now you can login to your account with the new password and hackers can no longer access your account.
Method 2 of 3: Reset Password on Facebook Desktop Site
Step 1. Go to the Facebook website
Visit The login page will be displayed.
Step 2. Click “Forgot Password?
(“Forgot Password?
”).
This link is under the “Login” button at the top right of the page. You will be taken to the "Find your account" page after that.
Step 3. Enter your email address or phone number
Click the field in the middle of the page, then type in the email address or phone number that you use to sign in to your account.
Step 4. Click Search (“Search”)
It's below the text field. After that, the account will be searched.
Step 5. Select the account reset option
Click one of the following options:
- ” Send code via email ” (“Send code via email”) – With this option, Facebook will send a six-digit code to the email address used to log into your account.
- “ Send code via SMS ” (“Send code via SMS”) – Facebook will send a six-digit code to the phone number associated with your Facebook profile.
- “ Use my Google account ” (“Use my Google account”) – This option allows you to use your Google account to verify your identity. This option allows you to skip the password reset process.
Step 6. Click Continue
The code will be sent to your email address or phone number. If you choose the method Use my Google account ” (“Use my Google account”), a new window will load.
Step 7. Get the verification code
The next steps will depend on the account reset option you selected:
- Email – Open your email inbox, search for messages from Facebook, and note the six-digit code that appears in the subject line.
- SMS - Open the messaging app, search for a new message from a five- or six-digit number, and note the six-digit code in the main body of the message.
- Google account – Enter your Google account email address and password.
Step 8. Enter the code
Type the six-digit code into the " Enter code " field, then click " Continue " ("Continue"). You will be taken to a password reset page afterwards.
Skip this step if you used a Google account to reset your password
Step 9. Enter the new password
Type your password into the " New password " field at the top of the page. From now on, you will need to use the new password to log in to your account.
Step 10. Click Continue (“Continue”)
Password changes will be saved.
Step 11. Check the "Log out of other devices" box and click Continue
You'll be logged out of all Facebook accounts on your computer, phone, and tablet, including the device the hacker used to access your account. You will also be taken back to the news feed page on your current computer, phone or tablet.
Method 3 of 3: Reporting a Hacked Account to Facebook
Step 1. Go to the hacked account page on Facebook
Visit in a computer browser.
Step 2. Click My Account is Compromised (“My account has been compromised”)
It's a blue button in the middle of the page. After that, the search page will load.
Step 3. Enter your email address or phone number
Click the field in the middle of the page, then type in the email address or phone number you normally use to access your account.
If you never registered a phone number with your account, you will need to use an email address
Step 4. Click Search (“Search”)
It's in the lower-right side of the text field. Facebook will search for your account afterwards.
Step 5. Enter the password
Type in the most recent password you can remember to access the account. Enter the password in the "Current or Old Password" field.
Step 6. Click Continue
It's a blue button at the bottom of the page.
Step 7. Choose a clear or valid reason
Check one of the following boxes:
- ” I saw a post, message, or event on my account that I didn't create ” (“I saw a post, message or event that I didn't create on my account”)
- ” Someone else got into my account without my permission ” (“Someone logged into my account without permission”)
- ” I don't see the right option on this list ” (“I didn't find the right choice”)
Step 8. Click Continue ("Continue")
You will be taken to the start of the hacked account recovery page afterwards.
If you check any of the options that were not shown in the previous " valid reason " section, you will be taken to the Facebook help page
Step 9. Click Get Started (“Start Now”)
It's in the lower-right corner of the page. Recent changes or activity to your account will be evaluated.
Step 10. Click Continue (“Continue”)
It's in the lower-right corner of the page.
Step 11. Enter the new password
Type your password into the " New " and " Re-type New " ("Re-enter password") fields.
Step 12. Click Next
It's a blue button at the bottom of the page.
Step 13. Check the box next to your name, then click Next
Your current name will be selected as the account name.
If this option is not available, skip this step
Step 14. Edit any unaltered information
Facebook will show some of the posts, settings, and other changes that were recently changed. You can accept the changes if you made them, or replace or delete them if someone else made them.
If prompted to edit your own post, click “ Skip ” (“Skip”) at the bottom of the page.
Step 15. Click Go to News Feed (“Visit the news feed”)
You will be taken to the newsfeed page after that. Now you have full access back to the account.
