This wikiHow teaches you how to convert a Microsoft Word document in DOCX format as a DOC file. DOCX files were introduced in Microsoft Word 2007 so versions of Word that still generate DOC files cannot open them. Fortunately, you can use modern versions of Word to convert DOCX files to DOC files. You can also use an online document converter if you can't use Microsoft Word.
Step
Method 1 of 3: On Windows Computer
Step 1. Open the DOCX file in Microsoft Word
Double-click the DOCX file to open it in Microsoft Word.
You can also right-click on the file, selecting “ Open with…, and clicked “ Word ”.
Step 2. Click File
It's in the top-left corner of the window. A pop-out menu will appear on the left side of the page.
Step 3. Click Save As
It's in the middle of the pop-out menu, on the left side of the window.
Step 4. Double-click This PC
It's in the middle of the window. After that, the "Save As" window will be displayed.
Step 5. Enter a new name for the DOC file
Type in whatever name you want to use as the DOC file name.
Step 6. Click the “Save as type” drop-down box
It's at the bottom of the "Save As" window. A drop-down menu will be displayed.
Step 7. Click Word 97-2003 Document
This option is in the drop-down menu. Format Word 97-2003 Document ” uses the DOC file extension.
Step 8. Choose a save location
On the left side of the window, click the folder where you want to save the document.
Step 9. Click Save
It's in the lower-right corner of the window. After that, the DOC version of the selected document will be saved to the specified directory.
Method 2 of 3: On Mac Computer
Step 1. Open the DOCX file in Microsoft Word
Usually, you can simply double-click the file to open it in Word.
You can also click on a file once to select it, selecting the menu “ File ", choose " Open With, and clicked “ Word ” on the pop-out menu.
Step 2. Click File
It's in the top-left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will be displayed.
Step 3. Click Save As…
This option is in the drop-down menu “ File " A "Save As" window will open after that.
Step 4. Enter a new name for the DOC file
Type in whatever you want the DOC file name to be.
Step 5. Click the “File Format” drop-down box
This box is at the bottom of the window. A drop-down menu will appear after that.
Step 6. Click Word 97-2004 Document
This option is in the drop-down menu. After that, the DOC file type will be selected as the save option.
Step 7. Select a save location
On the left side of the window, click the folder you want to set as the destination for saving the converted document.
You may need to click the " Where " drop-down box and select a storage folder afterwards
Step 8. Click Save
It's a blue button in the lower-right corner of the window. The DOC version of the selected document will be saved to the directory you specified.
Method 3 of 3: Using an Online Converter
Step 1. Open an online document converter site
Visit https://document.online-convert.com/convert-to-doc via your computer's web browser.
Step 2. Click Choose file
It's a gray button at the top of the page. A File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) window will open.
Step 3. Select the DOCX file
Go to the folder where you want to convert the DOCX file, then click the file once to select it.
Step 4. Click Open
It's in the lower-right corner of the window. The DOCX file will be uploaded to the converter site.
Step 5. Scroll down and click Convert file
This option is at the bottom of the page. The site will start converting the files.
Step 6. Click Download
This light green button appears to the right of the file name after the conversion is complete. The file will be downloaded to your computer afterwards.
