Displaying page numbers in a document that has multiple pages can be useful when you need to keep track of all the pages. It also helps to ensure that the pages in your document will read in the correct order when printed. Perform the following steps to display the base page number or Page X of Y page number in your Word document.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Adding Page Numbers in Word 2007/2010/2013
Step 1. Enter the page number
Click the Insert tab. In the Header & Footer section, click the Page Number button. From the dropdown menu, select the position of your page number: top, bottom, within the margin, or at the current cursor position.
Step 2. Choose the style
If you hover your mouse over the location you selected, another menu will open containing a list of page number styles. This style narrows the location of the page numbers, as well as determines how the page is displayed.
There is a "Page X of Y" category for all locations except the margins
Step 3. Format the number
After selecting a page number style, the design tab will open and the focus of the document will shift to the header or footer. Click the Page Number button, which is on the left side of the Design tab. Select Format Page Numbers… A new window will open, where you can change the numbering style (Arabic numerals, letters, Romanesque). You can also choose to include chapter numbers, and where the page numbers will begin in the document.
Step 4. Close the Design tab
Click the red and white X button to the right of the Design tab to close the Header and Footer Tools.
Method 2 of 2: Changing the Page Number Style in the Center of the Document
Step 1. Select in which number you want to change
Place your cursor at the beginning of the page for which you want to change the page numbering.
Step 2. Click the Page Layout tab
In the Page Setup category, click the Breaks button. Select Next Page from the list of available options. On the first page of the newly created section, double-click the header or footer to open the Design tab.
Step 3. Click Link to Previous
It's in the Navigation category. It will be divided into two sections, which can be used to change the header and footer. The header and footer have separate links, so depending on the location of your page number, you may need to remove the link in the correct section.
Step 4. Click the Page Number button in the Header & Footer category
Enter your new page number. Use the Page Number Format window to change the number format. You can also choose to continue the numbering from the previous section, or start a new numbering.
