It's hard to think of the sun as a blazing fireplace, but making hot chocolate milk a winter drink is easy. For a more delicious treat, add ice cream so that it has a milkshake consistency.

Ingredients

Cold drinks

  • 1 tsp (5 ml) cocoa powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 cup milk or water
  • A few cubes of ice

Dessert Drink

  • 1½ cups (360 ml) milk
  • cup (180 ml) vanilla or chocolate ice cream
  • a big spoonful of shaved ice
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) chocolate sauce

to make your own version: 7 oz (200 g) finely chopped chocolate, cup (120 ml) heavy cream

Step 1. Start with a glass of milk or water

Ice chocolate made from milk has a more diverse taste. You can also use water, but not recommended, unless you don't drink milk.

You can also experiment with other types of milk substitutes

Step 2. Mix cocoa powder and sugar according to taste

Start with 1 teaspoon (5mL) of each ingredient and adjust according to your taste afterward. You can use baking cocoa or cocoa powder without sugar.

  • Cocoa powder processed in the traditional Dutch way is less bitter, so most people prefer to drink it.
  • You can substitute both ingredients with a ready-made hot chocolate mix, but these mixtures tend to contain more sugar and almost no chocolate.

Step 3. Microwave for 30-45 seconds

Yes, this recipe is for iced chocolate. But in cold liquids, the cocoa powder and sugar tend to clump together. Warm the liquid just enough to dissolve the powder with a quick stir.

Step 4. Refrigerate for 30-60 minutes

Cool for a few minutes at room temperature, then place in the refrigerator. Your chocolate should cool in about half to an hour, depending on how cold your refrigerator is.

You can put this drink in the freezer for 5-10 minutes, but remember to take it out before it freezes. It would be best to transfer it to a plastic case in advance, as the glass may break with rapid cooling

Step 5. Add ice

Add a few cubes of ice to keep it cold, then drink it. But if you want a slushy drink, mix it with ice in a food processor or in a powerful blender.

Step 1. Make the chocolate sauce (optional)

This part is a little tricky, so don't be shy to start with a store-bought sauce mix. If you want to make your own, search for your options here or try these simple recipes:

  • Make a double boiler and pour some water into the pot located below.
  • Combine 7 oz (200 g) finely chopped chocolate (any type) and cup heavy cream in the top of a double boiler. This recipe is enough to make plenty of leftovers.
  • Bring it to a boil and stir constantly, until all the ingredients are combined. If the chocolate loses its luster, lower the temperature. If the sauce becomes lumpy/clumpy, it means the sauce has been heated too hot and can no longer be used.

Step 2. Mix together all the ingredients

Combine 1 tbsp (15 ml) chocolate sauce, 1½ cup (360 ml) milk, cup (180 ml) vanilla or chocolate ice cream, and plenty of crushed ice. To make an ice cream float rather than a thick drink, add the ice cream after it's finished blending.

  • If you don't have a blender, whisk the chocolate sauce into the milk and add the ice cream and crushed ice on top.
  • Adjust the amount as you like. Depending on the type and brand of chocolate, you may have to add more chocolate sauce.
