You may already know that green tea contains antioxidants, but did you know that green coffee has them too? Unroasted, green coffee beans contain antioxidants and chlorogenic acid which have been linked to weight loss. To try these benefits, brew a green coffee extract or take a ground green coffee supplement. Don't forget to consult your doctor before adding green coffee to your diet, especially if you are on medication.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Making Your Own Green Coffee Extract
Step 1. Buy green coffee beans
Look for high-quality, wet-processed coffee beans. That is, the coffee beans are not dried with the skin so that it can lead to fungal growth. If possible, buy machine-peeled coffee beans to remove the skin.
You can buy green coffee beans online or ask a local roaster to set aside some of the unroasted coffee beans for you to buy
Step 2. Rinse one cup of green coffee beans and put it in the kettle
Put one cup (170 g) of green coffee beans in a fine sieve and place it under the sink. Rinse briefly then transfer to a saucepan on the stove.
Do not rub the coffee roughly because the beans will lose the thin skin that contains antioxidants
Step 3. Add 3 cups (710 ml) of water and bring to a boil
Pour in the filtered or purified water and cover the pot. Turn the stove over to high heat and heat the coffee beans until the water starts to boil.
Step 4. Simmer the coffee beans for 12 minutes on medium heat
Open the lid of the pot and lower the heat to medium heat to allow the water to boil properly. Boil the coffee for 12 minutes and stir occasionally.
Stir gently so that the skin does not separate from the coffee beans
Step 5. Turn off the stove and strain the coffee extract into a storage container
Place a fine strainer over a bowl or storage container such as a teapot. Carefully pour the coffee extract through a sieve into the container.
- The filter will hold the coffee beans and large skin debris.
- Save the coffee beans for brewing. Once cool, put the coffee beans in a sealed bag and store in the refrigerator. Re-brewed a maximum of one week later, then throw it away.
Step 6. Drink green coffee extract
Unlike commercial coffee grounds that have to be mixed, this green coffee extract can be drunk straight away. If you don't like the strong taste, dilute it with a little water or juice.
Cover the container and put the coffee extract in the refrigerator for 3-4 days
Method 2 of 2: Benefits of Drinking Green Coffee for Health
Step 1. Try drinking green coffee for weight loss
Several small studies have shown that drinking green coffee can prevent weight gain. This is because green coffee contains chlorogenic acid which limits the body's ability to absorb carbohydrates.
Although more research is needed, green coffee is known to reduce blood pressure and improve blood sugar
Step 2. Monitor your dosage throughout the week
If you buy ground green coffee and mix it with boiling water, follow the dosage recommendations on the package. Unfortunately, there are no recommendations on how much chlorogenic acid can be added to the diet. So, you should monitor how much green coffee extract you drink every day. If you experience side effects, reduce the daily dose.
Some studies recommend adding 120-300 mg of chlorogenic acid (from a 240-3000 mg dose of green coffee extract), but there is no way to know how much chlorogenic acid is in homemade green coffee extract
Step 3. Watch for side effects such as headaches, diarrhea, and anxiety
Since green coffee contains more caffeine than traditionally roasted coffee, you may experience side effects. You may feel anxious, restless, or your heart is beating fast. If there are such side effects, reduce the dose of green coffee and consult a doctor.
Other side effects you may experience include diarrhea, headaches, and urinary tract infections
Step 4. Drink green coffee 30 minutes before eating
Whether it's a homemade green coffee extract or a ground green coffee drink, drink it on an empty stomach. Wait 30 minutes before eating or snacking.
