What happens if you really want a cafe-style mocha, but don't want to leave the house? Make it yourself, that's what to do! You can bring a cafe touch into the house quicker than changing your pants and leaving the house, whether you're just having drip coffee or espresso. So, put down your wallet and start Step 1 below.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Using Brewed Coffee
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
Here's what you'll need to make a mocha coffee drink using brewed coffee:
- 224 grams fresh (or instant) ground coffee
- 125 ml milk
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon warm water
- Sugar (optional)
- Whipped cream and cocoa powder (optional, for sprinkling)
Step 2. Brew as much coffee as you want
To get closer to the authentic taste, you need to use black roasted coffee which tastes stronger. And you can use instant coffee if you only use a pinch, but ground roasted coffee is much better.
Coffee becomes "stronger" if the dose is about 4 tablespoons ground coffee with 174 ml of water
Step 3. Make cafe-style chocolate syrup by mixing warm water and sweetened cocoa powder
Combine the ingredients in equal proportions and mix in a small bowl. You need about 2 tablespoons of this mixture for every one mocha coffee drink.
Step 4. In a mug, mix the chocolate syrup with the coffee
The more coffee, the more chocolate syrup you will need. But make sure to leave room for the milk!
Step 5. Heat the milk in a milk heater, on the stove, or in the microwave
How much milk? Of course, how big is the mug? 75 to 125 ml of milk is usually enough.
The milk should be at 60-70 degrees Celsius. If it is hotter than that, the milk will burn and the taste will be lost
Step 6. Fill the mug with hot milk
If there is milk foam, be sure to hold it down with a spoon, so that the foam stays on top of the mocha coffee.
If you really like sweet mocha coffee, add a teaspoon of sugar to this drink before adding the foam
Step 7. Sprinkle whipped cream, sprinkle with cocoa powder and enjoy
Chocolate syrup or caramel syrup-or even cinnamon or turbinado sugar (unbleached brown sugar)-is a sweet touch, too.
Method 2 of 2: Using Espresso Coffee
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
Here's what you need to make a mocha coffee drink using espresso:
- Roasted espresso coffee (regular espresso or de-decaffeinated espresso)
- 2 tablespoons hot water
- 1 tablespoon bitter cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- A pinch of salt
- 125 ml milk (any type)
- 1 tablespoon flavored syrup (optional)
Step 2. Combine hot water, cocoa powder, sugar and salt in a mug
This will create the classic chocolate flavor you can find in your favorite cafe; This concoction will be more satisfying than simply pouring Hershey syrup into the coffee. The syrup is only suitable for children.
Step 3. Brew espresso
You need to fill it up to about half a mug. If you don't want that much caffeine, consider mixing it with ground decaf espresso or using just a little coffee in your brew.
Step 4. Boil 125 ml of milk
Of course if you have a milk heater. If you don't have one, you can add milk directly to your espresso and heat it in the microwave, or heat it on the stove to 70 degrees Celsius. However, if you have an espresso machine, it may already be equipped with a heater!
- Make sure the tip of the milk heater is not too close to the bottom or too close to the top of the milk. Milk should not be too foamy but also not burnt and too hot. This warm-up takes about 15 seconds, and if you have a thermometer, stop at 70 degrees Celsius.
- Is your mug as big as the Central Perk coffee shop in the Friends series? Then you need to fill the milk as much as full.
Step 5. Add the hot milk to the chocolate syrup
But make sure to hold the edges of the hot milk with a large spoon, to hold in the foam. You need to keep the foam at the top, after the milk and chocolate are mixed.
When all of the milk has been poured into the mug, orient the milk foam so that it is on top, like icing on a cake
Step 6. Add this mixture to the espresso coffee
Here he is! The mocha coffee is ready. If there's a syrup you'd like to add (maybe caramel or raspberry), add it at this point.
Step 7. Garnish with whipped cream and a sprinkling of cocoa powder
Because it's not enough to just taste good, this coffee has to look good too. You can also decorate it with caramel, cinnamon, or turbindo sugar. Sprinkle chocolate and cherries if desired. Now, all you need to do is drink it!
Tips
- If you're adding whipped cream, try adding chocolate syrup on top to make it look like a coffee mocha with a coffee shop chocolate coating effect.
- If you want the chilled version, put the ice and coffee in a blender and mix.
Warning
- Be careful not to heat things up more than necessary. This will spoil the taste or overheat you.
- Be careful not to get hot.
- Experiment with different sweeteners to find the one that tastes best for you. There are some problems with the health effects of various sweeteners, from granulated sugar, Splenda brand sugar, to NutraSweet sugar, and their derivatives.
