A perfectly rolled burrito is an art that deserves to be desired. There's nothing more disappointing than starting to eat a burrito and then it spills over and falls apart. For this reason, humans invented a technique that would keep the burrito filling from coming out of the tortilla roll. If you want to know how to roll a burrito, then read this article!
Step
Method 1 of 2: Rolling Large Burritos
Step 1. Make sure your tortilla is large enough to fit the filling
A good rule of thumb when making burritos is to make them at least twice as large as the filling you put them in. That means that you have to fold the burrito in half, with the filling inside, and easily reach both ends saving space.
Step 2. Apply moisture to the tortillas
This step is important. Keeping the tortilla warm and moist makes it softer, which means it's easier to work with. To get some warm moisture in tortillas, try one of the following:
- Place the tortillas under a large panini press over medium heat for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Place the tortillas on a plate in the microwave for 30 seconds over high heat.
- Steam the burrito using a regular steamer.
Step 3. Be careful when adding the burrito filling to the center of the tortilla
Maybe you already have an idea of what you want to put in the burrito, but if not, you can get a hint from the following example:
- Beans (black, refried, pinto, etc.)
- Rice (white, red, or "Spanish")
- Meat (carnitas, carne asada, chicken, etc.)
- Cheese
- Lettuce
- Salsa ("red," eg: pico de gallo, or "green," eg: tomatillo salsa)
- Sour cream
- Guacamole
Step 4. Combine the front and bottom wings of the tortilla then quickly lift it into the air
Be sure to keep the burrito filling inside the tortilla from spilling out. Lay it back down with the top exposed.
Step 5. Pull the left wing of the tortilla over the burrito filling in the center
Step 6. Pull the right wing of the tortilla over the burrito filling in the center
The two wings of your tortilla probably won't overlap at this point.
Don't pull the end of the tortilla wing too tightly when you fold it down the middle. This can cause the tortilla to tear, causing the filling to spill out before you eat it
Step 7. Fold the top wing of the tortilla under the burrito filling using one or both hands
At this point, you should pull all of the burrito filling that is in the center toward your body.
Step 8. Start with your body then move forward, rolling the burrito forward
This will make the burrito come together to form a cylinder. Let the burrito rest on top of the tortilla end wing for a minute or two; this will help hold the ends of the tortilla together, making them stick together.
Step 9. Wrap the burrito in aluminum foil
It has three functions: keeping the burrito warm through insulation; helps the burrito become denser; into molds to help people eating the burritos easier to hold.
Method 2 of 2: Rolling Small Burritos
Step 1. Apply moisture to the tortilla
Once again reminded that this step is important. You can microwave tortillas, steam them, or place them under a panini press to get the heat and humidity you want. Choose the most suitable method for you.
Step 2. Carefully add the burrito filling to the center of the tortilla, being careful not to overfill the tortilla
Place less of the burrito filling directly into the center of the tortilla.
Step 3. Fold the left and right sides of the tortilla towards the center
The sides will meet, or the filling of the burrito will tell you when to stop.
Step 4. Grab the underside of the tortilla and fold it up and then to the bottom of the burrito filling
This move is exactly when you're folding a larger burrito.
Step 5. Continue rolling the tortilla until it forms a traditional cylinder
Your little burrito has been successfully rolled.
Step 6. Wrap the burrito in aluminum foil
This will keep the burrito warm through the insulation; helps the burrito become denser; into a mold to help the person eating the burrito easy to hold.
