Store-bought hair bands are often expensive, especially for something as simple as a girl's hair accessory. So why don't you start some fun and save money by making your own hair band? All you need is a few materials to work with, such as ribbon, glue, and sewing needles and threads. See Step 1 below to get started.

Method 1 of 2: Making a Simple Hair Band
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
To make a simple hair band, all you need is a piece of ribbon, a threaded needle, hot glue gun and bobby pins.
- If you're just making hair bows for fun, you don't have to worry about the length of the ribbon.
- However, if you need a hair band of a certain size, you will need to cut the ribbon material to a size that is twice the desired length, plus 2.5 cm.
- For example, if you wanted to make a hairband measuring 5 cm you would measure 10 cm plus 2.5 cm (as the distance to stack). shoot glue
Step 2. Draw a circle
Fold the ribbon material to make a full circle, so that the ends overlap by 2.5 cm. Make sure the front side of the tape is facing out (especially if the material is patterned).
Step 3. Insert the needle through the center
Press the center of the ribbon material to flatten the circle. Take your needle and thread and thread it through the center of the folded ribbon, back to front.
Step 4. Wrap the thread
Fold the center of the ribbon with the accordion fold. Then wrap the thread around the center a few times to secure it. Knot the thread, then cut off the remaining thread.
Step 5. Add the middle node
Take the second piece of ribbon and make a basic knot. Place the knot in the center of the ribbon, then secure the ends of the ribbon material with hot glue or a little stitch.
Step 6. Attach the ribbon to the hair clip
Apply a small amount of hot glue to the surface of the clamp, then attach the tape firmly. Let it dry for an hour before use.
Step 7. Add the finishing touches
If you like, you can add a little extra embellishment to the ribbon by attaching the sequins with hot glue or using glitter glue for the fabric.
You can also layer the ribbon by creating a second ribbon with a contrasting colored ribbon. Lay one ribbon on top of the other, then add a middle knot (that wraps around both ribbons) before attaching it to the bobby pin
Method 2 of 2: Creating Stacked Hair Ribbons
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
To make a stacked hair band, you will need three pieces of ribbon material of the same color or pattern; one piece of ribbon will form the “main band” so it must be larger than the other two ribbons. You'll also need hot glue, a threaded needle with a knot at the end, scissors, a bottle of anti-frizz liquid and a hair clip.
Step 2. Make circles
Take the widest piece of ribbon and make a loop in the middle, like the loop you make for tying shoelaces.
- The first circle will determine the size of the ribbon in the end, so adjust it to the size you like. If you are using a patterned ribbon, make sure the patterned side is facing out.
- Hold the first circle with your thumb and index finger, making a second circle on the other side. You will now see the shape of the ribbon starting to form.
- Make a third and fourth circle, using the same technique. The fourth loop should cross the center of the ribbon (from left to right) to make the second ribbon tail.
- At this point, take some time to adjust each circle, to make sure they are all the same size.
Step 3. Fasten with thread
Hold the four circles at their center with your thumb and forefinger, hold the needle and thread with your other hand and thread through the center of the ribbon, back to front.
- Make a few stitches in the center of the ribbon to secure it. It's okay if the center stitch is a bit messy, because you won't be able to see it when your ribbon is finished. Make a knot behind the ribbon, then cut the thread with scissors.
- If one of your tails is still attached to the roll of ribbon, cut it off. Leave the ends of the ribbon long for now, you can cut them to your desired length later.
Step 4. Make the second and third ribbons
Take two smaller pieces of ribbon and use the same method to make the other two.
Try to make these two ribbons slightly smaller than the last, as you will be stacking them one on top of the other
Step 5. Attach the ribbons
Take the larger ribbon and place the two smaller ribbons on it, making sure the midpoints are aligned.
- Take your threaded needle and thread it through the middle of the three ribbons, from back to front. Make a few stitches to secure the tape attachment.
- After a few stitches, take the thread and wrap it around the center of the ribbon a few times. Pull hard to crimp the center of the ribbon.
- You may have to adjust the loops as well as the ribbon tails a bit to make sure everything is smooth and in the right place.
- After you've looped the thread in the center of the ribbon a few times, loop it back and tie a knot behind it to secure it, then cut the thread.
Step 6. Make a middle knot and attach it to the hair clip
Take a new piece of ribbon (it can be any of the three colors or patterns) and make a simple knot. Adjust the tape to make sure the patterned side is facing out.
- Align the knot in the center of the ribbon; this will cover up the messy stitches that were made earlier!
- Turn the tape over and use hot glue to apply a dot of glue to the back of the tape. Take your bobby pin, open it, and press the top half into the glue.
- Take one end of the knotted piece of ribbon and tuck it into the open hair clip. Press to attach it to the glue underneath. Cut the rest.
- Apply a small amount of glue to the piece of ribbon you tucked into the bobby pin, then take the other end of the piece of yarn and stick it in place. Cut the rest.
- Now your ribbon is firmly attached to the hair clip.
Step 7. Trim the tail of the ribbon
Turn the tape over so it's facing the right direction. Take your scissors and trim the six tails of the ribbon.
- The easiest way to do this is to trim it in a slanted cut, from the outside edge in. The length of the ribbon tail is up to you.
- The final step is to take a bottle of anti-tasting liquid and apply a small amount along the cut edge of each ribbon tail. This will prevent the ends of the tape from fraying.
Tips
- If you want your bobby pin to match the ribbon, you can attach a piece of ribbon material around the bobby pin before attaching the ribbon.
