In Minecraft, fishing is one way you can get food for your character. Also, there's a chance that you can get special items. The two things needed are fishing rods and water. You can fish more quickly in the right weather and lots of light.
Step
Part 1 of 2: Preparing to Fish
Step 1. Make a rod
You will need three sticks and two ropes. Place the stick on a diagonal line. Place the rope in a vertical line, under the stick.
Step 2. Try magic your fishing rod
There are three kinds of magic (enchantment) that can be used to conjure a fishing rod. Unbreaking Magic will increase your endurance, Lure will speed up your fishing, and Luck of the Sea will increase your chances of getting treasure instead of trash.
Unbreakable magic was much more common than the other two types of magic. Your chances of getting Luck of the Sea or Lure are around 35% at level 15, and about 53% at level 30
Step 3. Find an area that is experiencing rain, if possible
If you fish in an area where it's raining, you can save about 20% of your time getting something. However, if you've cast a fishing rod with Lure, you can get something every 20 seconds on average instead of every 25 seconds.
- Rain will fall across the temperate biome at the same time. If you have inspected a forest, plain or swamp, you will know whether it is raining nearby or not.
- If you use a cheat (cheat mode), enter /weather rain to bring rain.
Step 4. Destroy everything that is right above the water block
Once you've decided where to fish, destroy all the blocks that are above the water. If there's something blocking the sun or moonlight from hitting the water, it will take you twice as long to catch the fish. Anything that isn't transparent (including leaves) can block light, and anything that blocks movement will block rain.
Part 2 of 2: Throwing the Hook
Step 1. Find water
You can use any puddle for fishing. You can even dig a hole and pour a bucket of water into it. It is recommended that you drill holes that are at least 2 blocks wide and 2 blocks deep. This will make it easier for you to throw your hook without hitting a solid block.
Step 2. Use the fishing rod to fish in the water
Get a fishing rod and use it to fish in the water (right click for computer edition). The fishing line will float along with the buoy (bobber) attached to the end of the line.
Buoys can get stuck on objects and mobs. So you have to pay attention to the direction of the hook throw
Step 3. Observe for small sparks
At first, the buoy will sink, then the object will pop up to the surface of the water. Observe and listen carefully. If you see a small splash around the buoy and you hear the sound of splashing water, immediately use the rod again to reel in the fishing line. If successful, the fish or other object will lift from the water and land near your character, along with an experience orb.
- Water splashes will not be visible when the particle effect in the game settings is set to "minimum".
- If you miss the opportunity to reel in the line, the fish will be released. You can leave the float in the water and try again.
Step 4. Take the object that has been fished
If the fishing object doesn't land near your character, look around. Maybe it landed somewhere. The following are possible items you can get when fishing with an unenchanted rod:
- 85% chance is fish. Usually it's just "raw fish," but you can also get salmon, clownfish, and pufferfish. Beware: pufferfish are poisonous.
- 10% chance is trash. These are things like broken leather boots, tripwire hooks, or ink bags.
- 5% chance is treasure. There are 6 possibilities (all have an equal chance of spawning): a damaged and enchanted bow; a broken and bewitched fishing rod; bewitched books; identification (name tag); saddle; or lotus leaf.
- The items are of the same type for all editions, but the percentages apply only to the computer edition.
Tips
- When you throw a hook and the hook hits a solid block, the hook will get stuck (unless it hits bedrock). You can still catch fish, but it takes a lot of effort to reel in the line. Try to build a pond large enough for you to fish safely.
- Raw fish doesn't do much to fight hunger. For better results, cook the raw fish in the stove first.
- Fish can be used to tame and breed ocelots (a type of wild cat).
