Surely you've seen people who twirl a pencil on their thumb. You may even have mastered the technique. However, there is an even more powerful trick that will amaze your friends: twisting the pencil around the middle finger.

Part 1 of 2: Twisting a Pencil Around Middle Finger
Step 1. Know the position of the pencil before turning and hold it well
Place the tip of the pencil on the index finger, the middle of the pencil on the middle finger, the thumb between the index and middle fingers, and the fingernail of the ring finger touching the inside of the pencil.
Touch the pencil as if it hangs on the tip of the fingers. Relax your hands to relax. This position will feel a bit dangerous, but this is how the pencil rotates
Step 2. Straighten your ring finger so that the pencil is pushed back
The initial movement of the pencil starts with the ring finger being straightened and pushing the pencil around the middle finger. The little finger will usually follow the ring finger. Leave it alone, because it will not interfere with the rotation of the pencil.
Your pencil twisting technique isn't finished yet. You can practice this move, but there are other parts that also need to be learned
Step 3. Keep your index finger and thumb out of the loop path
Let's discuss this part separately:
- Before turning, the pencil rests on the tip of the index finger. When your ring finger pushes the pencil, just straighten your index finger outward so it doesn't block the path of rotation. The index finger will later be used to catch the pencil to stop the spin.
- The thumb bends down and releases the tip of the pencil when the ring finger initiates the thrust. A push from the ring finger and a release at the thumb are two movements that make your pencil spin on the middle finger. Just like the index finger, the thumb will later catch the pencil to stop spinning.
Step 4. Move your middle finger forward as the pencil starts to rotate
When your ring finger pushes on the pencil and your thumb releases the tip, bring your middle finger closer to you. Thus, the index finger and thumb can catch the pencil to stop the spin.
Do not be too strong when carrying the middle finger. The pencil will fly flying and harm the people around you
Step 5. Catch the pencil with the thumb
When the pencil is fully rotated on your middle finger, stop with your thumb and grasp the bottom of the pencil with your index finger.
Step 6. Continue or stop your trick
When the pencil is caught after a full rotation, return it to the starting position (the position before the pencil was rotated). After that, keep practicing until this trick is mastered smoothly.
When you finish circling your middle finger, the pencil should land on the skin between your index finger and thumb. Steady the catch using the help of your thumb and other fingers. Now, the pencil should be in writing position or something. This position is perfect for ending your trick
Part 2 of 2: Perfecting the Technique
Step 1. Start slowly
When you first practice, start out as if the trick is done in slow motion. Guide your pencil around your middle finger as much as needed. That way, you'll be able to learn the basics much faster. As you get more proficient, increase the speed. This trick can be mastered with enough time and practice.
- If the pencil is rotated slowly, the index finger is forced to catch the pencil and bring it to the thumb. However, this is not necessary if the pencil is rotated rapidly.
- If you are already proficient, do the rounds without the help of your thumb. That way, you can more easily do the " Harmonic " and connect it to the combination trick.
Step 2. Do the exercise with different types of pencils and pens
Sometimes, there are pencils or pens that are long and heavy not suitable for turning. If you have trouble turning one pencil or pen, switch to another.
Pencils are usually long and slippery, making them difficult to twist. If you're having trouble turning the pencil, try switching to a shorter, thicker pen so it's easier to grip
Step 3. Try doing a double loop
If you are advanced enough, try changing the starting position of the pencil between the pinky and the sweet. Using the same technique, rotate the pencil around the ring finger, and catch it between the middle and ring fingers. Now, you are ready to continue the loop to the middle finger. This double spin will amaze your friends. In fact, you can even try turning the pencil from your little/ring finger to your index finger!
After that, try to learn how to rotate the pencil in reverse (from index/middle finger to middle/ring finger). That way, you can do this trick back and forth over and over again! This trick is called “Middle Around Harmonic.”
Step 4. Try another spinning technique
This trick is suitable to be done in class. The pencil rarely loses control and is thrown off by being held up by the thumb. However, you might be interested in trying other tricks, such as Twisting the Pencil Around the Thumb or Twisting the Pencil around the Thumb in Reverse.
Tips
- Make sure your fingers aren't too stiff so that the pencil doesn't fall or spin wildly.
- Adjust the power while doing the trick. The methods described above may not work for you.
- As the exercise progresses, reduce the movement of your middle finger. Continue the exercise until only the pencil appears to move in your hand.
- Do the exercises in your spare time or while watching television.
- This trick is professionally named “Middle Around.”
- Attach a tablecloth to prevent the pencil from rolling and falling to the floor.
- After completing the loop, place the pencil back in the starting position with the other hand, if you're still having trouble doing it with one hand.
Warning
- Use a mechanical pencil or an unsharpened pencil to avoid injury.
- Install the pen cover to prevent injury and ink splashes.
- If the pencil is thrown while it is spinning, someone could be hit and hurt, including yourself. Therefore, the pencil should not be twisted too strongly.
