The sling is an important accessory in beauty pageants. The sash is also commonly used to mark the guest of honor at bachelorette parties, baby seven month celebrations, and other special occasions. You can make a sash easily (and as needed) using craft tools and a sewing machine.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Designing a Sling
Step 1. Prepare a ribbon about 180 cm long and 8 centimeters wide
The wide band makes a great sling, and reduces your sewing work. A 180 cm long ribbon is sufficient for an adult, but you will need to adjust the size of the person who will be wearing the ribbon. Measure the tape to the desired person by slinging it from the hip toward the opposite shoulder, and back to the original hip. Ribbon that is too long can be cut, so it's better to prepare the ribbon more than you need it than if it's not too long. Use a ribbon of the desired texture and color.
Choose a thick ribbon with a matte color so that the letters that are installed later can be firmly attached to the ribbon
Tip:
If you want, you can use a wider band. For example, you can easily capitalize a sash if you use a 10-centimeter-wide ribbon.
Step 2. Select decorative trim
You can make the sash stand out more by adding a hem, lace, or another type of trim if you like. Make sure you have enough trim to cover the entire edge of the ribbon.
- For example, if the ribbon is 180 centimeters long, you will need a trim of the same length to cover only one edge of the ribbon. So you'll need a trim that's twice as long to cover both edges of the ribbon.
- Try contrasting a red ribbon with black trim, or a pink satin ribbon with white lace.
Step 3. Select the letters to be ironed on the ribbon
You can buy ironed letters (letters that are pasted with iron) at a craft store. Choose the font style and color you want. Make sure you buy a letter that is meant to be ironed and that it doesn't exceed the width of the tape.
Tip:
If you don't want to use ironed letters, you can write the letters on the ribbon by painting it or using a marker. You can also embroider the letters on the ribbon to make the sash look elegant. Use a permanent marker or fabric-specific paint.
Step 4. Choose sequins (shiny decorations), crystals, and other types of decorations
To add sparkle and color to your sash, try attaching sequins, crystals, and/or beads. If possible, use decorations that have flat sides. This makes it easier for you to attach it to the tape.
- Try adding a light pink crystal to the edge of a dark pink beauty pageant sash.
- Add red sequins to a black bachelorette party sash.
- For your baby's seventh month celebration, you can embellish a white sash by adding baby accessory beads (eg rattles, bottles, baby shoes, etc.) in contrasting colors.
Part 2 of 3: Sewing the Sling
Step 1. Glue the trim to the tape using a pin
To make the sash stand out, attach the trim to one of the edges of the ribbon (or both, if you prefer). Make sure the trim is overlapped with tape at least 1 cm long. Secure its position by sticking the pins through the trim and ribbon every 8 cm.
Step 2. Sew the trim to hold it together with the ribbon
Sew the ribbon straight about 1 centimeter from the edge of the trim to attach it to the ribbon. Make sure your stitches go through the ribbon and trim.
Step 3. Position the desired letter on the ribbon
Bend the tape in half so that the ends are parallel, then place the tape on a flat surface. Next, start placing the letters in the center of the ribbon. Attach the letter about 8 cm to 15 cm from the crease and the end of the ribbon section. Use even spacing between letters.
If you want to write a long word on the sash, place the first letter near the edge. For example, if you want to make a sash that says Bachelors Party, start gluing the letter "P" about 8 cm from the edge of the ribbon and space it evenly so that the letter "G" (the last letter in the word "Bujang") is also about 8 cm from the edge of the ribbon. the other edge of the tape
Step 4. Iron the letters on the ribbon
Follow the directions given on the letter packaging to iron it on the ribbon. You may need to cover the letters with a towel or T-shirt to protect them from the heat. Run the hot iron evenly over all the letters.
Step 5. Glue the other decorations
Apply fabric glue to the ribbon where you want to add crystals, sequins, or beads. After that, press the decoration over the glue. Repeat this until all the decorations are attached. Let the glue dry overnight.
For example, if you are making a sash for a wedding, try gluing accessories related to the wedding, such as a miniature wedding cake, a model of a wedding dress, or an accessory in the form of a wreath
Tip:
You can also add crystals or sequins in a color that the guest of honor likes on all occasions.
Part 3 of 3: Attaching the Sling
Step 1. Glue the two ends of the sash together
Before locking the two ends of the sash, try wearing it. Position the sash as desired and adjust the ends so that they meet near the hips. The two ends of the sash must be overlapped with a slightly tilted position. When you're happy with the position, stick the pin through the 2 ends of the tape to secure it.
Step 2. Sew the ends of the sash
Remove the sling from the body with the pin still stuck. Next, sew the two ends of the sash straight, just below the pin.
Remove the pin when you are finished sewing
Step 3. Trim the excess tape
When both ends of the ribbon are sewn together, cut the ribbon along the edge of the hem (the seam crease at the edge of the ribbon), about 1 cm from the stitch you just worked. After that, remove the rest of the fabric and the sash is ready to use!
