Safari's main page or "homepage" is the page that loads every time you start Safari. You can change this page to any page you want, but if your computer/device is infected with advertising devices, the main page settings may still return to the default advertising device settings. In a situation like this, you can manually remove the advertising tool to get a “back” on the page settings. If you're using an iOS device, you can create your own shortcut to simulate a standard homepage.
Step
Method 1 of 2: OS X
Changing Home
Step 1. Open the Safari browser
You can change the Safari start page ("home page") directly through the browser.
Step 2. Click the "Safari" menu and select "Preferences"
After that, Safari's “Preferences” menu will open.
If you are using Safari on a Windows computer, click the “Edit” menu and select “Preferences “. It is highly recommended that you switch to a more recent browser as Safari for Windows is no longer supported by Apple so you cannot receive any security updates
Step 3. Select the “General” tab if it is not already selected
Step 4. Find the "Homepage" field and enter the desired site/page address
Make sure you enter the full address starting with
- You can also click Set to Current Page to set the currently open page as the browser's new home page.
- If another page remains as the main page, even after you've set it up, move on to the next segment.
Remove Advertising Device Infections (Adware)
Step 1. Understand the right time to follow this step
If you've changed the main page in Safari's “Preferences” menu, but the page still redirects to another unwanted page, there is a possibility that your computer has an adware infection. The device wipe process is a little tricky, but if it works, you can go back to setting up Safari as usual.
Step 2. Update OS X to the latest version
The OS X update includes anti-advertising tools so that by updating the operating system, you can remove the adware infection. Click the Apple menu and select “App Store " or " Software Update " to check for available system updates. Once updated, test Safari again to see if the home page setup issue persists. If so, keep reading this segment.
Step 3. Open the “Preferences” menu in Safari and select the “Extensions” option
This option displays all the extensions currently installed in Safari. Select any unknown or unwanted extension, and click the Uninstall button. Some fairly common advertising tool extensions include:
- Amazon Shopping Assistant by Spigot Inc.
- Cinema-Plus Pro (Cinema + HD, Cinema + Plus, and Cinema Ploos)
- Ebay Shopping Assistant by Spigot Inc.
- FlashMall
- GoPhoto. It
- Omnibar
- Searchme by Spigot, Inc
- Slick Savings by Spigot Inc.
- Shopy Mate
Step 4. Close Safari and click the " Go " menu on the Finder window
Select "Go to Folder".
Step 5. Browse the following list to see if you can find any of the entries shown
Copy and paste each entry in the "Go to Folder" field. If found, the entry will be displayed and selected in the Finders window. Drag the selected entry to the Trash icon and switch to another entry. If the entry is not found, move to another entry in the list.
- /System/Library/Frameworks/v.framework
- /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
- /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
- /Library/InputManagers/CTLoader/
- /Library/Application Support/Conduit/
- ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
- ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/TroviNPAPIPlugin.plugin
- /Applications/SearchProtect.app
- /Applications/WebTools.app
- /Applications/cinemapro1-2.app
- ~/Applications/cinemapro1-2.app
Step 6. Restart the computer
After browsing the list, restart the computer and empty the Trash.
Step 7. Hold down the button
Shift when running Safari.
With this step, the previous windows will not be reopened.
Step 8. Try changing the browser home page
Once the advertising tool is removed, you can reset the homepage using the steps described in the first segment of this article.
Method 2 of 2: iPhone, iPad or iPod
Step 1. Use Safari to go to the desired main page
There is no way to set a “standard” home page on iOS versions of Safari because the browser will only show the last visited page. If you want Safari to always load a certain page when you launch it, you can create a shortcut to that page on the home screen and run Safari through that shortcut instead of the regular Safari app icon.
Step 2. Touch the "Share" button after finding the page you want to make the main page
You can select any page you want.
Step 3. Touch the “Add to Home Screen” option
You can give the shortcut your own title, or just customize the exact address. Touch " Add " when finished making changes.
Step 4. Use the new shortcut to launch Safari
Each time you touch the shortcut, Safari will load the desired page, and not the last page accessed. This is a great way to get around the absence of standard homepage options, such as those available on the desktop version of Safari.
