Defense of the Ancients, also known as DotA, is a map in Blizzard Entertainment's game Warcraft III. The map was created by players and deserves to be called the most popular custom map ever. The game combines strategy, spatial abilities, teamwork and a little luck. DotA's tempo is relatively fast for a role-playing game. As a result, beginners can find it a bit difficult to master. But, with a little practice and a few guiding tips, even beginners can start building success in the world of DotA.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Install DotA
Step 1. Have a copy of Warcraft III:
The Frozen Throne and one Battle account. net.
- You can buy Warcraft III virtually from Blizzard by visiting The Blizzard Store or your nearest game store.
- Access Battle.net, then create an account. You need it to play DotA. Try to choose an account name that is unique and easy to remember.
Step 2. Download the DotA map
Visit Get DotA and click "Download" in the "Latest Map" menu. Save the file in a folder that you can easily access.
Step 3. Copy and paste that file in your maps folder
The map folder is located in your game directory.
Step 4. Start Warcraft III and log into Battle
net. The latest revision (patch) is automatically downloaded as soon as you access your Battle.net account.
Method 2 of 2: Strategy and Play
Step 1. Join a game session
Select a game session from the "Custom Game" list. You will find DotA, its versions, and various game modes available.
-
The most common game modes include:
- "-ap", aka all pick, which lets you choose any hero;
- "-em", aka easy mode, which lowers the difficulty level of the game;
- "-ar", aka all random, which assigns a hero randomly to each player.
- If you're a beginner, try the random hero option for the first few game sessions so you can get to know some heroes. Once you are familiar enough with one hero, you may choose that hero. However, for the first game session, you should choose an easy-to-play hero, such as the Skeleton King, whose "Reincarnation" move can revive him as soon as he is killed.
- To select a hero, click on one of the visible buildings, or one of the buildings located at the far end of the map, and you will see a list of all the heroes you can choose from. Choose one of them. Or, type "-random" to get a random hero.
Step 2. Buy some basic items for your hero
Start by recognizing the type of hero you are playing: Strength, Intelligence, or Agility. Usually, you can identify the type of hero by observing the statistics of the three characteristics; which one is the tallest?
- You can view stats by clicking on your hero, then viewing the right side of his portrait. Based on those stats, explore the available shops, and buy items that will amplify his moves. At the beginning, you should access the Female Human shop or the shop closest to the Fountain; from here you can get the item "Boots of Speed". This shoe-shaped item is absolutely essential to your success as it makes your character move faster, which is definitely what you need most when you're in a pinch. If your game performance isn't great, buy some defensive items like Bracers.
- Several items can be combined to create new, more powerful items. This combination is called recipe (recipe). In the middle of the game, you need to buy recipes, which you can find in other shops. To obtain this recipe item, you must purchase all the items mentioned in the description. Some recipes don't need to be purchased with coins; for this item, you simply collect the described items. The strength of the recipe depends on the store that provides it. From weakest to strongest, the shops included: Human Peasant, Orc Peon, Night Elf Wasp, and Undead Acolyte.
- Later you need to also buy items that are more suitable for your hero. To find out what items you need, ask other players. The problem is, many players are reluctant to help, but instead harass you so that you get fed up and leave the game. Just ignore people like this. Fight hard until you no longer need the help of other players.
Step 3. Upgrade the main move
Click the red cross symbol in your hero character menu, observe the moves, and choose the one that you think is most useful.
Step 4. Select a lane (lane)
Lanes are lanes where computer-controlled monsters--commonly called creeps--run and attack all enemies that cross their path. Try to stay in a lane with a teammate and follow the action. You earn coins for each creep you kill. Coins also accumulate automatically over time. In Easy Mode you earn more coins than other modes. To maximize your coins, don't attack creeps constantly. Watch his lifeline, and set the timing so you can give him the final blow. This final blow is commonly called last hits, and only last hits earn coins.
- When fighting in a lane, your goal is to survive and collect as much experience points (EXP) as possible without having to return to base to recover. You gain EXP by killing. So, stand behind your own creeps while attacking your opponent's creeps. Let your creeps take the hit.
- When you find yourself alone in a lane, don't be afraid to ask for help. If you're inexperienced, and the opponents in your lane are too great, explain to your teammates that you're still a rookie, and they may be willing to help. You can ask one of your teammates to switch lanes when you are pushed back. Or, maybe someone wants to work with you to concentrate on that lane.
Step 5. Know where you stand in team battles
For DotA beginners, the biggest problem is that they tend to get confused when the two teams start fighting. They don't know what to do. There are so many styles of play, but here are the most important and commonly known ones. Later when you are more experienced, you can learn other styles of play on your own.
- ganker. This type of hero usually has high hit points (HP) and strong area moves. They can take many hits at once inflicting considerable damage. For example, Ax.
- Carry. This type of hero is tasked with killing opponents for the benefit of his team. They are usually active from mid to late game. Carry also has many moves and attacks that destroy the opponent. For example, Phantom Lancer.
- Supportive. The existence of this hero is very important in a game. They support their teammates, especially Carry, so they don't get killed and can kill instead. Dazzle is one of the Supportive type heroes.
- Baby sitter. This style of play is usually needed when Carry is hard to kill. His job is to launch Carry's efforts in slaughtering opponents until the Carry is able to do his own farming.
Step 6. Avoid launching attack moves to creeps
Use moves to weaken the opponent's hero, then ask your comrades to gang up--the term ganking--That opponent who was starting to be helpless. Ganking is a game tactic where your partner sneaks behind the opponent's hero, while you approach him from the front, and ends up with an attack that corners him. Of course for him to be killed. Once he dies, you get some of the coins he has.
Step 7. Take advantage of the tower (tower)
Towers that are entrenched in all three lanes very strong, don't mess with the opposing tower. Let your creeps destroy it little by little. On the other hand, when your hero is weak, your chances of survival are greater if you are very close to your tower.
- Move around a little so you can always be behind the tower. Once your opponent gets close, they have to face the tower first, not you.
- But, if more than 3 heroes or creeps gang up on your tower, just walk away. Looks like you need to go back to base.
Step 8. Seek advice on what items to buy
Once you have enough coins from killing creeps or enemy heroes, ask your teammates what item you should use. Then head back to base to buy that item or recipe. The choice of the right item for your hero can determine life or death. Don't be silly when shopping!
Different situations, different items you need. During both teams fighting, if your teammates are slaughtered by an opposing hero who looks so powerful and difficult to kill, you can choose the item "Orchid Malevolence", "Cyclone (Eul's Scepter of Divinity)", or "Hex (Guinsoo's Scythe of Vise).)". Then, try to distract your opponent so that your friends have enough time to get together and do tank. Tanking is a game tactic in which a high-durability hero--commonly called a Tank--runs at a group of opposing heroes, and when he takes a hit, his trailing companions destroy the opponent one by one.
Step 9. Towards the end of the game, focus on slaughtering the opponent's hero
You need as much EXP as possible at the end of the game, which you can earn just by killing, so try to kill the opposing hero. Of course, you'll also have to kill the creeps if your level lags behind other players, or if you need coins. Remember, DotA is a team game. Do your best to help your team.
Step 10. Always remember the goal of the game
The ultimate goal of DotA is to destroy the opponent's base and its main building, namely the Frozen Throne (owned by the Scourge team) or the Tree of Life (owned by the Sentinel team). Every time your opponent's barracks are destroyed, your creeps become stronger. This is your priority!
Tips
- Learn how to do "farming". Farming is the act of killing neutral creeps in your area or the opponent's area. Learn how to farm early in the game, especially if your hero is a "late-gamer" (weak early in the game, but strong towards the end). Avoid clashes at the start. Just collect coins. For example, Troll Warlord should be diligent in farming and avoid fighting against enemy heroes before level 10. With these coins, he can buy Lothar's Edge, Wraith Band, Power Treads (Agility), and Helm of Dominator. The same tactic applies to Drow Ranger (Traxex).
- The game is won by a team that is diligent in pushing (pusher), not diligent in killing (killer); Unfortunately, many people believe otherwise. "Pushing" is the act of slaying enemy creeps and destroying opposing towers on your way to your opponent's base. The problem is, the opponent behaves the same way. Keep an eye on your towers around the clock!
- Pay attention to the mini map. The map shows where the opponent is. When your opponent suddenly disappears from the map, they may be hiding, ready to hit you or your teammates. In a situation like this, you must report to the team that the opponent is "mia" aka "missing in action". You should also do this when the opposing hero who is facing you in a lane suddenly leaves the lane for no apparent reason. Maybe he intends to frame you or your friends. If you don't report it right away, and your friend is killed later, you could be considered a "noob" and your friends could insult you.
- Avoid one-on-one confrontations early in the game. Prevent unnecessary damage by staying behind and near your creeps.
- Learn how to do a "money-shot" aka last hit against a creep. Press the alt=""Image" key when you are near a group of creeps to see their lifeline. Then hold down the s button so that your hero stops attacking creeps. When the remaining life of the creep you are aiming for is very low, release the s button, and your hero will immediately attack it with a last hit, which gives you additional coins. This technique is quite difficult because the amount of damage inflicted by each hero is not the same. That's why, know your hero so you know when it's time to make a money-shot. IMPORTANT: This is a mandatory skill for every DotA player, you must learn it.</li" />
- Play multiple heroes. Experiment with all existing heroes. So many players are reluctant to use certain heroes because they are difficult to control or feel that the hero is too weak. Wrong. You should try to play all the heroes even if some feel uncomfortable. In fact, in the learning process, you could be slaughtered by your opponent. However, you will gain one important experience: you become more familiar with the hero. You know what the moves are. Later, you can act right when the opposing team chooses that hero. Ready is better than surprised right? Trust me, you won't like being killed by a hero just because you don't recognize the move. If you don't want to learn the moves of each hero, you are a big sin!
- Play DotA as often as possible. That's the only way to learn. Each game can be very different from the previous one. Your experience gets richer just by playing together and against various people and dealing with various situations. Pay attention to the playing styles and designs of the best players. The design is usually called a build, which is a sequence of purchasing items and activating moves. Then imitate them. Yes, you have nothing to lose if, as a beginner, you enjoy imitating other, more experienced players. Many designs of hero players have proven to be effective. Feel free to experiment with your own way later, after you are more experienced or even good at it.
- Always carry the "Town Portal Scroll". At the beginning of the game, this item is very useful. With it you can move to a lane crowded with enemy creeps; This tactic adds up your coins quickly.
- If your hero is still weak or doesn't have any strong items, don't try to kill the opponent's hero. It's best if you concentrate on destroying towers and slaying creeps.
- Remember, the most important thing when playing DotA is to maintain patience. Get to know your hero's moves, strengths, and weaknesses. Prepare from the start whatever your hero will need later in the middle and end of the game. What style of play do you want? Pusher, killer, ganker, wander, or maybe even supportive? Buy items as needed. Don't be too passionate or tempted. When you are in a critical situation, you should immediately go home (towards headquarters) and reorganize your strategy. Or just to recharge life and mana. Such a decision is better than being killed; You have to wait longer before your hero comes back to life.
- If you feel you can't overthrow the opponent's hero in battle, start running back to base. Every time your hero is killed, you don't get EXP, even your coin stores are drained. And, most annoyingly, that death makes the opponent's hero (who killed your hero) even richer.
- Newer versions of DotA include the "-tips" command. This command provides game tips for your heroes at regular intervals.
Warning
- Don't leave the game unfinished. Your team mates will be furious if you do this.
- If your session name says "banlisted," or you see other players joining and leaving the arena while you're waiting for the session to start, don't leave. Don't feed your opponent either. The host (game player) may impose a "ban" on you. After that, you will not be able to participate in the games hosted by the Host. But unless you get banned by multiple players or an Approved Host, you don't have to worry about it. Approved Hosts rarely hold public games anyway. They usually host TDA (Team DotA AllStars clan) games and other leagues where high level players participate. Well, don't even try to leave the game like that!
- As a new player, be prepared to receive harsh and harsh reactions from many other players because your performance is not "okay". Don't let their attitude discourage you. They were also beginners at first. Just ask them for help. And, try to be a good team member.
