Step

Method 1 of 2: Using Glitch Gambler and Youngster

Step 1. Reload your game save if it's too far in the game

The game's handicap requires you to fight Gambler and Youngster in a certain order.

We recommend that you obtain HM02, Fly from the house west of Celadon City

Step 2. Press "Start" immediately in front of Gambler

You'll find it near the underground passage from Lavender Town to Saffron City. If you press Start in time before Gambler sees you, the Game Menu will appear.

Step 3. Fly to Cerulean City

Gambler will see you once you select Fly and music will sound. Nonetheless, you must fly to Cerulean City.

Step 4. Go to Youngster in the bush area just after Nugget Bridge

He is the fourth coach to meet after crossing the Nugget Bridge. She also stood on top of the female trainer and faced north. Don't approach him, and let him approach you. He is very easy to beat because he only has a Slowpoke level 17.

Step 1. Reload your game save if it's too far in the game

This handicap requires you to fight trainers hiding in the grass and Youngsters (both in Cerulean).

Step 2. Catch Abra (if you don't have any other Pokémon that know Teleport)

You can find it on Routes 24 & 25 of Pokémon Blue/Red and Route 5 (prepare a Pokémon that can put it to sleep).

Don't fight Jr. Trainer (marked #7) hiding in the grass to the left of Route 24 while trying to catch Abra. You will need it later

Step 3. Walk to the edge of the grass and stop

If you enter the grass, the trainer will see you and start a fight.

Step 4. Save the game

It's a good idea to save the game in case this doesn't work on the first try. Reload saved game from retry.

Step 7. Go to Youngster (#4) on Route #25

Make sure you don't fight anyone before reaching it, except with Mountain Man (#1), which is unavoidable. Put some distance between you and Youngster so he needs to walk up to you.

Tips

  • You can use Teleport and Fly.
  • Mew's only attack is Pound.
  • If you make a mistake, restart your console.
  • You may save the game during the glitch process.
  • The trick in this method is to fly away from the trainer who is “seeing” (wanting to fight) you from the edge of the monitor screen. This means that if you approach him while the coach is not visible on the screen, he will see you as soon as you see him. This glitch comes from a late reaction from the coach. When he sees you but doesn't know it yet, you can press the start button and do anything in the pause menu. This is your chance to fly anywhere, and start a glitch.
  • Remember, other trainers like Super Nerd just to the west can also take advantage of Mew Glitch. The only difference between other trainers and Gambler is that you have to go off the same route that the trainer is on.
  • Mew will be at level 7. Make sure you have a weak Pokémon to reduce Mew's HP without defeating it. You can also give Paralyze or Sleep status effects. Even at low levels Mew is very hard to catch.

Warning

  • You need to try a little harder if you are not experienced.
  • Since you only have the Poké Ball, be prepared to fight Mew a few times to catch it. Try to catch a Caterpie and evolve it into Butterfree, who has attacks that can confuse Mew. Thus, Mew becomes easier to catch.
  • The first method is actually a glitch (which is pretty powerful) so even though there's usually no problem, sometimes the Mew bus gets disabled too. If so, restart the game.
