Making knives by sharpening is a fun, useful, and useful activity of making crafts with iron. Although this activity is time-consuming and requires a high degree of patience, if you follow these steps, you will be able to make your own knife without realizing it.
Step
Method 1 of 6: Blade Blade Design
Step 1. Draw the blade of the knife
Use graph paper to design the shape of the blade you want. Draw using the same size as the original size to make the process easier.
Use your creativity in designing knife blades, but still pay attention to function and use
Step 2. Determine the length of the blade
The length of the blade can be adjusted according to each individual, although large blades will feel heavy and require a lot of iron to make.
Step 3. Design the knife handle
The handle of the knife is the part that is attached to the handle of the knife. The easiest method of making knife handles is known as "full tang." In this method the handle of the knife is made the same thickness as the knife, and the handle is made by attaching pieces of wood to both sides of the knife handle using rivets or rivets.
Method 2 of 6: Prepare Tools and Materials
Step 1. Use carbon iron
There are several different types and grades of iron. In making knives, do not use stainless steel because the metal is difficult to shape and the results will not be good. 01 iron is the most popular type of carbon iron for making knife blades because it is easy to dip in hot water.
Look for iron plates that are 0.35 to 0.60 cm thick
Step 2. Determine the material for the knife handle
Wood is an easy material to make knife handles, but you can also use any material you want. Since these are instructions for making a full tang knife, use materials that can be attached with rivets or rivets. G10, micarta, and kirinite are good products and are also water repellent.
Step 3. Print the knife design
Print the knife design that you have made on graph paper on a metal plate using a permanent marker. The line formed will help you in cutting the iron plate. Make sure you print the handle as well because the blade and the handle are two pieces that go together.
Adjust the size of the knife if necessary when you have the basic shape
Step 4. Prepare the equipment
The tools you need are hacksaw, angel grinder with hard wheel and flap wheel, vise, protective gear and some other equipment you have such as grizzly grinder or KMG. Apart from that you will also need some spare saw blades.
Method 3 of 6: Cut Iron
Step 1. Use a saw to cut the iron
Cut a rectangle around the knife image you have designed to separate the image from the metal plate. Use a harder saw if the iron is a little thick. This rectangle is what you will grind to form the knife.
Step 2. Roll out the blade shape
Place the rough cut of the knife on the vise then grind it. Follow the directions to shape the blade. Use a grinder to smooth out the shape of the blade.
Step 3. Grind the edges of the knife
Gently grind the edge of the knife to make an indentation using the flap wheel. Make sure the indentation is in the middle of the blade. Make indentations on each side of the blade. This will give you the correct shape of the knife edge.
Go slow while doing this, because if you grind too much the blade won't form properly so you'll have to start all over again
Step 4. Drill the part where you will attach the rivet or rivet
Use a drill bit that is the same size as the rivet you are going to install. Make a hole in the handle. You may need to make several holes, depending on the size of the knife.
Step 5. Perform the final step
Smooth it using sandpaper with a fineness of 220. Do not be too hasty when sanding so that the scratches on the knife disappear. Sand the entire surface of the knife. This is done so that the blade is shinier and of better quality.
- Sand in a different direction each time you change the sanding surface.
- You can also use an engraver to make hollows on the inside near the handle of the knife. Follow the existing pattern then carve.
Method 4 of 6: Making Knives Using Fire
Step 1. Prepare the wrought iron
The best way to make a knife using fire is to forge it. For small knives, you can use a torch flame. For larger blades, you can use coal or gas forgings.
Prepare the dipping liquid. To cool the knife, you must dip the knife in the liquid. The liquid used depends on the type of iron, but for type 01 iron you can use a bucket of oil. You have to dip the entire knife in the liquid
Step 2. Heat the knife
Heat until iron is orange. Stick it on the magnet to see if the blade is hot enough. When the iron has reached the required temperature, the magnetic power on the iron will disappear. When it doesn't stick to the magnet, cool it with air. Repeat this process up to 3 times.
- When repeating the above process a fourth time, do not cool the iron with air, but dip it in oil. Be careful with the fire that will arise when the iron is dipped in oil, so make sure you use adequate protection.
- Once it hardens, the knife can break if it falls, so hold on tight.
Step 3. Preheat the oven
Set the oven temperature to 200°C. Place the knife in the oven and heat for 1 hour. After 1 hour, the heating process is complete.
Step 4. Sand the knife again
Use sandpaper with a fineness of 220 to 400. Polish the knife if you want it to be shiny.
Method 5 of 6: Attach the Knife Handle
Step 1. Cut the wood you will use as the knife handle
For a full tang knife, there are two pieces of wood for the handle mounted on each side of the handle. Cut and sand the wood at the same time to make sure both sides are symmetrical.
Step 2. Attach the wood using epoxy or glue
Drill to make holes for rivets or rivets on both sides. Be careful not to let the epoxy touch the blades as this will be difficult to clean. Clamp in a vise and dry overnight.
Step 3. Use a saw for the final step and adjust the blade to the handle
Insert a rivet or rivet until it remains 0.60 cm through the holes in the handle on each side and smooth it out with a hammer. Install all the rivets then sand the knife handle.
Method 6 of 6: Sharpen the Knife
Step 1. Prepare the whetstone
You will need a large whetstone for this step. Apply oil to the rough surface of the whetstone.
Step 2. Hold the knife at an angle of 20° from the surface of the whetstone
Slide the knife over the whetstone in a chopping motion. Lift the knife handle as you sharpen the knife all the way to the end. After a few swipes, flip the knife and sharpen the other side.
Once all sides of the knife have been sharpened, repeat on the other side of the whetstone that is still good
Step 3. Test your knife
Hold a piece of paper and cut the paper with a knife near the part you are holding. A sharp knife will easily cut the paper into pieces.
