A vaporizer is a mechanical device that converts water into steam and sends the steam into the surrounding atmosphere. This machine is usually used to relieve blockages or humidify dry airways. While each vaporizer model comes with a set of instructions, there are some general procedures that apply to all existing vaporizer types.

Step

Method 1 of 2: Daily Use

Step 1. Read the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging

While there are some general similarities between most vaporizers, each manufacturer's version will have slight differences and a particular vaporizer may have a specific set of instructions or procedures to follow. The instructions also usually explain how to disassemble and clean it.

Step 2. Use the vaporizer at night

While you can technically use a vaporizer during the day, using it at night is the most common practice because it clears the sinus passages so you can fall asleep. Whatever time of day you choose to use it, do not turn on the appliance all day because the air around you will become too humid.

Step 3. Fill the container with distilled water

Most vaporizers have a "fill limit" that indicates the water level. You can fill the container below this limit as the water level will gradually decrease once it is converted to steam, but this will not allow you to get the maximum efficiency out of the vaporizer. Filling the tank above the limit line may cause the device to not work properly.

It is recommended that you only use distilled water, not tap or well water. Tap water contains minerals, and these minerals can clog your engine or spread dust and contaminate the air in your home

Step 4. Place the vaporizer on a flat surface and at a safe distance

You may need to place a towel under the steamer to catch the water that drips and will eventually damage the floor surface. You need to place it at a distance of about 122 cm from you, your child, or other people. The hot mist from the appliance can cause burns if it comes into direct contact with the skin, especially for long periods of time.

  • If you use the vaporizer in a child's room or in a home with children, place the machine on a high surface so that children cannot reach it, to avoid accidental exposure. You should also make sure that the surface on which the vaporizer is placed is sturdy enough and does not sway easily, thereby dropping the apparatus.
  • Do not place the vaporizer in an area where bedding, curtains, rugs, or other fabrics will get wet.

Step 5. Plug in and turn on the vaporizer

Some vaporizers will activate immediately after installation. For other types of tools, there will be a switch or dial that needs to be pressed to start the engine.

Step 6. Maintain air circulation in the room at all times after use

While a warm, humid environment can relieve blockages, bacteria and mold thrive in a room that is constantly damp. If bacteria or fungi start to grow, you and your family may experience breathing problems. If possible, leave doors and windows open during the day when the appliance is not in use. Turn on the electric fan if needed to maintain air circulation in the room.

Method 2 of 2: Cleaning

Step 1. Clean the vaporizer regularly

Bacteria grow in a humid environment, and if the vaporizer is not cleaned and dried properly, bacteria can grow in it. If bacteria grow inside the device, it will be transferred to the air through the evaporation process. To prevent this from happening, change the water every day and clean the machine at least every three days.

Step 2. Disassemble the vaporizer

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for disassembly. Usually, the only part of the appliance that needs to be removed for cleaning is the water tank. On certain models and brands, the engine is not designed to be disassembled. For such a vaporizer, all you have to do is unscrew the water tank cover and try to clean it while it's still connected to the rest of the engine.

Step 3. Make or buy a cleaning solution

A little antibacterial soap or mild dishwashing detergent mixed with hot water is usually sufficient. For a stronger solution, you can mix in three percent hydrogen peroxide. If the vaporizer you are using calls for a specific cleaning solution, follow the manufacturer's instructions and use the recommended type.

Step 4. Scrub the inside of the tank with a soft brush or cloth

A baby bottle brush or vegetable brush will work, but a clean microfiber cloth is better suited for this task. Dip a brush or cloth in the cleaning solution and scrub the inside of the water tank thoroughly, soaking the cloth again in the solution as needed until the entire tank has been scrubbed clean.

Step 5. Flush the inside of the tank

You can use tap water or distilled water. Pour a small amount of water into the water tank, shake the tank, then throw it away immediately to clean the tank of soap or detergent residue.

Step 6. Dry the inside of the tank with a clean microfiber cloth

Rub the inside of the tank with a dry cloth as dry as possible. This is especially important if you want to return the vaporizer to storage space.

Tips

If using a vaporizer doesn't seem to help, try a humidifier. Most humidifiers are "cold mist humidifiers," which work by distributing cold mist into the air, unlike vaporizers that produce warm steam. They work in the same way and on the same principles as vaporizers, but some people may find cold mists more comfortable to inhale than warm vapors produced by vaporizers
