You may be looking for a unique new hairstyle, or want to shape and add volume to your current hair. Regardless of the look you want to create, there are many ways to make your hair stand on end. Using the right styling products and methods, you can make your hair defy gravity in minutes.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Using Dry and Wet Hair Styling Products
Step 1. Wash hair
It will be easier for you to add volume to your hair when your hair is clean. Dry with a damp towel when you're done.
Step 2. Pour and massage 1 ml of pre-styling foam into damp hair
Apply a small amount of pre-styling foam to your palms, then run your fingers through your hair from front to back. Massage the product all over your hair as you do so. The use of pre-styling foam can add volume and shape to your hair.
For even more benefits, look for pre-styling foam products that act as heat shields
Step 3. Use a hairdryer on medium/high heat for 5-6 minutes
Blow-dry your hair from back to front so that the dry hair at the back becomes a longer front layer.
Step 4. Use a round brush to comb the hair back and forth
When drying your hair, comb it in a wave-like pattern. This will keep your hair combed upwards, as well as give volume to the rest of the section.
For short hair, this is all it takes to make the hair stand on end. Longer hair usually requires the help of additional products
Step 5. Use a hairdryer on a cold setting for 1-2 minutes
At the end of the 5-6 minute interval of blow drying your hair on the heat setting, switch the setting to cold. Continue to use this setting until the hair is completely dry. Use a cool setting at the end of the drying process to keep your hair from changing its shape.
Step 6. Apply 5 ml of clay or hair paste for a dry look
Apply a small amount of the product to your palms, then rub it into the hair you just added volume. Using this product will help your hair maintain its shape while still maintaining its natural look.
- If you have thick hair, use hair clay. However, if your hair is thin, use a paste.
- Using too much product can weigh down your hair making it difficult to stand up. When in doubt, use less clay/paste. You can add it if it's missing.
Step 7. Apply 15 ml of gel or hair wax to create a wet look
Apply a small amount of the product between your fingers, then use your hands to form a spiky hair. When using gels and waxes, start at the roots of your hair and work your way up with your fingers. Gels and waxes will keep your hair standing on end, and looking wet all day long.
Step 8. Finish styling with hairspray
This step is optional, but using hairspray will ensure that your hair doesn't change shape. Spray just a little to lock the volume. This is especially important for longer hair, as it can make it much more difficult to fall off or loosen up.
Step 9. Experiment with different products
If you're having trouble getting your hair to stand up, you're probably using the wrong product. For example, if your hair is long--up to 13cm from your scalp--pomade or clay are the best products. However, if you have short hair, just use gel or wax.
Method 2 of 4: Combing Hair Up
Step 1. Use the teasing technique for long hair
Brushing the hair is done with a fine-toothed comb or brush to make the hair more voluminous. The result of this technique is often called the “beehive” look. The back combing technique is a great way to make your hair stand on end without using a lot of styling products.
Step 2. Use your fingers to form short hair with styling products
You can add volume to your hair using your fingers by pulling them up. Add a dash or more of styling product to your hands, depending on the length of your hair. After that, gently comb your hair from the roots to the ends. Comb and pull the hair with your fingers up to stand.
- For the look of wet hair, use a gel. For the appearance of dry hair, use a matte type care product.
- This technique works best on slightly dirty hair, because the hair's natural oils can maintain the shape of the hair. Try to style your hair a day or two after washing.
Step 3. Use a hair pick for wavy hair
If your hair is very wavy, you can create volume and make it stand up using a hair pick. Start with the hair pick pointing towards the roots, then comb 2.5 cm from the length of your hair to make it add volume subtly.
Method 3 of 4: Using Static Electricity
Step 1. Blow up a balloon
Take a rubber balloon and fill it with air, either by inflating or blowing it. Fill the balloon with enough air until the rubber stretches and hardens, then tie it.
Step 2. Rub the balloon into the hair on your head
Move the balloon back and forth a few times across your scalp. This can channel the static energy from the balloon throughout your hair so the hair can stand on end.
Step 3. Look at yourself in the mirror
By now, your hair should be standing up. The static energy effect won't last more than a minute, but you can maintain it by constantly rubbing the balloon through your hair.
Method 4 of 4: Choosing the Right Hairstyle
Step 1. Try the quiff hairstyle
A quiff hairstyle refers to a hairstyle in which the front is longer, while the back gradually looks thinner. Ask your stylist to cut the sides and back of your hair thinner while leaving the top long.
Save some photos of the quiff hairstyle on your phone for reference in case you have trouble explaining the style in question
Step 2. Choose a quiff hairstyle with a length of 13 cm in the front
When you make the front stand up, this hair shape will look thick and not limp. The longer your hair in the front, the more volume you can create when you style it.
Step 3. Ask for short hairstyles that taper on the sides and back
The length of your hair on the sides and back should be shorter than 2.5 cm. When finished cutting, there will be a striking contrast in the length of the hair between the front and back.
Step 4. Shave your quiff hair once a month
It is difficult to make quiff hair stand if the top is more than 13 cm long. If you like this hairstyle, we recommend going to the barber when it reaches between 2.5 cm and 5 cm in length.
