If the space on the kitchen counter is limited or you don't intend to buy new appliances, maybe you are confused about how to make toast without a toaster? Fortunately, there are some great alternatives. If you don't have a toaster, you can bake bread in a skillet on the stove, bake it in the oven, or bake it slowly in the oven too. You can even bake toast over the campfire while camping!
Step
Method 1 of 4: Baking Bread in a Frying Pan
Step 1. Place a medium skillet on the stove over medium heat
Take a medium-sized non-stick skillet or cast iron skillet with a smooth surface. Place the skillet on the stove and turn the heat to medium heat. Wait a minute or so to heat it up.
Step 2. Spread butter on one side of the bread
While waiting for the pan to heat up, spread butter on one side of the bread.
- Store the butter in the container and place it on the counter to keep it soft and easy to spread.
- If the knife is firmly against the bread, hold the corner of the loaf with one finger to prevent it from sliding.
Step 3. Place the bread on the pan with the buttered side down
Once buttered, toast the bread. The buttered part should be in contact with the surface of the pan.
Step 4. Cover the bread and let it rest for 2 minutes
Take the lid of the pan and place it on it for 2 minutes. The cover will retain the heat inside and make the bread bake faster.
If the stove is too hot or you don't want the bread to be too crunchy, reduce the heat
Step 5. Grease the other side of the bread with butter, then turn it over
After 2 minutes, open the lid of the pan. Spread butter on the side of the bread facing up. Use a spatula to turn it over.
Step 6. Cover the pan and remove the bread after 2 minutes have passed
Cover the pan again and wait another 2 minutes. After that, use a spatula to transfer the toast from the pan onto a plate. Sprinkle whatever toppings or toppings you want on the bread and enjoy!
Method 2 of 4: Baking Bread in the Oven
Step 1. Move the oven rack to the top
The toaster is usually at the top of the oven. Move the rack to make sure the bread is as close to the toaster as possible.
Step 2. Set the oven to bake and preheat
Possibly there is a button "on" (lit) and "off" (off) on the toaster, or it can be an option "high" (high heat) or “low” (low heat). Press "on" and/or "high" and preheat the grill for about 5 minutes.
Step 3. Place the bread on a baking sheet and place it on the top rack
Put the bread on a baking sheet without oil. Place the pan on the top rack so that it is close to the heat source.
- If you don't have a baking sheet, just carefully place the bread on the rack in the oven.
- Baking pans are usually large and can be a good choice if you are making several loaves of bread at once.
Step 4. Turn the bread over after 1-2 minutes have elapsed
Watch the bread closely. A high-heat toaster will make the bread crunchy, but it can also burn if you don't keep an eye on it. Use oven-safe tongs and turn the bread over after 1 or 2 minutes have elapsed.
Step 5. Remove the bread from the oven after another 1-2 minutes
About 1-2 minutes later, put on oven mitts and remove the pan. Use tongs to transfer the bread from the pan onto a plate and spread out any toppings or puffs of your choice.
Method 3 of 4: Slow Baking in the Oven
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C
Set the oven to a low temperature setting, ideally to 180 °C. Wait until you hear the oven beep, then add the bread.
Step 2. Place the bread on a baking sheet and place it on the middle rack
Place the baking sheet on the middle rack to bake the bread evenly.
Step 3. Turn the bread over after 5 minutes
After 5 minutes have elapsed, open the oven door and use tongs to flip the bread over to the other side.
Step 4. Remove the bread from the oven after the next 5 minutes have passed
Wear oven mitts when removing the pan. Use tongs to move the bread from the pan onto a plate. After adding whatever toppings or toppings you want, the bread is ready to eat.
- Try classic toppings or toppings, such as peanut butter, Nutella, or cinnamon and sugar.
- If you want to be more creative, sprinkle the bread with fig jam, goat cheese, walnuts, or hummus and olive tapenade.
Method 4 of 4: Making Toast Over the Bonfire
Step 1. Find a safe place to make a campfire
If you don't have a fire pit, find a place to build a campfire where the ground isn't dusty, grassy, or muddy. Also, don't choose a place near a low-hanging tree branch.
Step 2. Turn on the fire
Place some large stones in a circle where the bonfire will be lit. Place flammable materials (such as scraps of paper) and lighter items (such as small sticks or cardboard) in the circle. Light the fire with a lighter and blow gently until it ignites and spreads. As the fire gets bigger, add more lighters, followed by small firewood, and finally large firewood.
If you're having trouble keeping the fire alive and expanding, try lighting several flammables and lighters at the same time
Step 3. Place the wire grill rack and cast iron skillet over the heat
Once the bonfire is lit, add charcoal to it, then place the grill rack carefully and in a stable position over the fire. After that, place a medium or large cast iron skillet on a rack.
If you want to add flavor to the bread, spread some butter on the pan and let it melt. Use the remaining bacon fat if you're also frying it
Step 4. Put the bread in the pan
Put the bread on the pan. You can place as many loaves of bread as you like in the width of the pan, without overlapping them.
Step 5. Turn the bread several times until each side turns brown
Campfires are more predictable than grills, stoves, or ovens. So, flip the bread with tongs after 20 or 30 seconds to see how fast it bakes. Turn it over again after about 30 seconds and do it a few more times if necessary. Use tongs to remove the bread from the pan once both sides are evenly brown.
Step 6. Put out the bonfire
When you're done enjoying the bonfire, fill a large bucket with water and pour it over the fire to put it out. Stir the coals with a stick while pouring water on them to make sure they are all wet. You can only leave the bonfire area after the hissing sound from the coals and ashes is no longer audible.
Warning
- Always follow the necessary safety procedures when building a campfire.
- Make sure you turn off the stove and/or oven when you're done using them.
