This wikiHow teaches you how to play videos saved in MKV format on a Windows or Mac computer using DivX Player or VLC Media Player.

Method 1 of 2: Using DivX Player
Step 1. Go to the DivX download page

Step 2. Click the FREE SOFTWARE button
It's a blue button in the top-right corner of the page. After that, the DivX installation file will be downloaded immediately.
Step 3. Wait for the DivX file to finish downloading
You may need to select a save location or confirm the download before the file starts downloading, depending on your browser settings.
Step 4. Install DivX Player
The installation process will depend on the operating system your computer is running:
- Windows – Double-click the DivX installation file (marked with a blue and black icon), click “ Yes ” when prompted, click “ Next ”, check the box “Accept” and click “ agree " After that, click " Next ", click " Skip, and select " Finish after the installation process is complete.
- Mac - Open the installation file, verify the installation of the program, and drag the black and blue DiVX icon to the "Applications" folder shortcut.
Step 5. Open the DivX Player program
Double-click the DivX icon which resembles a blue "x" on a black background to open it.
Step 6. Click the File button
It's in the top-left corner of the DivX window (Windows) or the top-left corner of the screen (Mac).
Step 7. Click Open Video…
It's at the top of the drop-down menu " File " After that, a new window will be displayed.
Step 8. Select the MKV video you want to play
Click the video you want to open in DivX. You may first need to click the folder containing the MKV file (e.g. the “ Desktop ”) on the left side of the window.
Step 9. Click Open
It's in the lower-right corner of the window. After that, the video will open in DivX Player. The video will play just like a normal video file.
Method 2 of 2: Using VLC Media Player
Step 1. Open the VLC Media Player webpage

It's a blue button on the right side of the page. After that, the VLC installation file will be downloaded to your computer.
The VLC site will detect your computer's operating system (eg Windows or Mac) and provide the appropriate download files
Step 3. Wait for the VLC installation file to finish downloading
You may need to specify a save location for the file or confirm the download before the file starts downloading, depending on your browser settings.
Step 4. Install VLC Media Player
The installation process will depend on the computer's operating system:
- Windows - Click the button " Next ” in the lower-right corner of the window until VLC starts installing. After that, click " Finish ” after the installation is complete.
- Mac - Open the installation file, verify the installation of the program, and drag the VLC icon to the "Applications" folder shortcut.
Step 5. Open VLC Media Player
Double-click the orange traffic cone icon to open the program.
Step 6. Click Media
It's in the upper-left corner of the VLC Media Player window. After that, a drop-down menu will be displayed.
On a Mac, click the “ File ” in the upper-left corner of the screen.
Step 7. Click Open File…
It's in the middle row of the drop-down menu. Once clicked, a file browsing window will appear where you can select a video file to open in VLC Media Player.
Step 8. Select the MKV file you want to play
Click the file you want to open in VLC. You may first need to click on the folder containing the MKV file (e.g. the “ Desktop ”) on the left side of the window.
Step 9. Click the Open button
It's in the lower-right corner of the window. After that, the MKV video will be opened in VLC Media Player. Usually, the video will start playing right away, just like any other video file.
