There's a reason the picture on the front of a vinyl album is called “art” – it can be a beautiful decoration on a home wall. Apart from having a bright and eye-catching color, these images also allow you to showcase your favorite music on the wall. Hanging a vinyl album with a custom frame is the simplest option. Using other methods, such as screwing hooks, allows you to insert and remove vinyl records from album covers to the wall. If you want to use a vinyl record without a cover as decoration, consider gluing it to the wall with permanent wall tape or gluing it with tacks.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Hanging the Album Cover with Hook Screws
Step 1. Determine the position of the album cover on the wall
You can hang albums in a row in a row, or arrange them to form a square or rectangle. Either way, the best place to hang your vinyl album is near – or even right above – the record player so you can play the album easily.
Pay attention to the number of album collections when determining their position on the wall. Album display will look slicker if lined up in the same number
Step 2. Purchase 4 fixing screws to attach one album
After determining the number of album covers to hang, you can calculate the number of screws needed. L-shaped hook screws can be found at almost any material store. Look for screws that are about 5 cm long.
Hook screws are usually sold in silver or gold. Make sure the color of the screws matches other metallic accents in your room, such as doorknobs or light fixtures
Step 3. Draw a line on the wall to define the bottom position of the recording album
Use a spirit level and a pencil to draw a straight line on the wall that will mark the bottom of the album cover. To find out whether the level of the spirit level is straight or not, pay attention to the bubbles in the tube. If the bubble is straight and halfway between the two lines, the spirit level is straight. However, if the bubble is tilted to one side, the tool is still tilted.
You can also use a sheet of painting tape to mark the position of the line instead of a pencil if you don't want to scribble on the wall. Make sure you use the spirit level with the tape to make sure it doesn't tilt
Step 4. Measure and mark the bottom screw fixing point for the first cover to be installed
Draw two points 25 cm apart on the line you just created and position them right in the center of the planned layout. This screw will be used to hold albums displayed in the middle position on the bottom row (or in the middle position only if you are only displaying albums in a row).
To attach each album cover, you will need to prepare two screws at the bottom. Another screw is positioned on either side of the album, just half the height of the cover so it doesn't fall off the wall
Step 5. Mark the position of the fixing screw on the side of the album
Start making a mark by looking at the position of the screw on the bottom right, then move it about 4 cm horizontally to the right and 17 cm vertically, then mark the area by making a dot. This will be the location of the screw on the right side of the cover. After that, find the point marking the screw on the bottom left, then move it about 4 cm horizontally to the left and slide it again 17 cm vertically, then mark the area with a dot. This will be the location of the screw on the left side of the album.
- The two screws on the album side should be about 32 cm apart from each other.
- There are no screws attached to the top of the cover for easier insertion and removal of albums.
Step 6. Mark the screw holes for other albums to be displayed in the same way
Provide equal spacing for the screws holding each album in place. There should be a gap of about 3 cm on each album cover. In other words, the screws on the separate sides of the album should also be about 3 cm apart.
The bottom left screw on one album should be about 10 cm from the right screw on the other album
Step 7. Attach the screws to the marked area on the wall
After marking all the locations of the screws, start attaching them to the wall. Make a small hole in the wall with a nail to start the process. After that, use your hands to turn the screw until it snaps into the wall. Make sure the screw is perfectly straight and not tilted up or down.
- The screw heads should protrude about 3 cm from the wall surface.
- The L-shaped portion of the bottom fixing screw should face up. The screws attached to the side of the album cover must face the inside of the album being displayed.
Step 8. Slide the album cover through the screws on the side until it is caught by the hooks at the bottom
Once all the screws are fixed to the wall, you can insert the album art into its respective slots. You can remove the album you want to play at any time or replace it with a new album.
Tuck in the album cover slowly – don't put too much pressure on the fixing screws as this could damage the wall
Step 9. Repeat this process for each existing album row in your layout
Mark an area about 3 cm from the top edge of the album that has been displayed on the wall and use a spirit level to make a new line. Use this line as the basis for attaching the hook screws in the new line.
The position of the screw must be vertically aligned with the screw in the previous row
Method 2 of 3: Flaunting Album Covers with Frames
Step 1. Purchase a play-and-display frame for good accessibility
There are several special vinyl album frames with varying advantages and disadvantages. The play-and-display frame features a front that opens and closes for easy access to albums. This frame is a fairly expensive option and is suitable for collectors who often play LPs from the albums on display.
The use of frames should be chosen when you want to show off a vinyl album in small quantities because the price tends to be more expensive than other options
Step 2. Purchase a plain plastic frame as a pure decor option
These frames are generally the most economical option and are sold in packs of 10 to 20 frames. However, using these frames will make it difficult for you to access the album. Sometimes the shape is too thin so it can't hold the album cover containing the LPs.
You can display album covers or vinyl records in this frame. If you want to display a vinyl record, make sure you don't want to play it anymore because the surface will be scratched by the frame
Step 3. Insert the gatefold type album into the groove wall hanger
This special frame only consists of top and bottom holders so you can slide albums in and out. This is a great option for showing off a thick album or a gatefold type album because there is no glass on the front.
This method is included in the economical option
Step 4. Make a plan to position the album on the wall
Albums can be hung in a straight line or shaped in a square or rectangular formation. Consider the number of albums you want to display when determining their positioning.
The album display on display will look slicker if the number of albums per line is the same
Step 5. Measure and mark the area where you want to hang the album
If you hang more than one album, consider using parchment paper to map its position on the wall. As a rule of thumb, allow about 3 cm or more of space between one frame and another. Just make sure the spaces are equidistant.
Step 6. Attach the frame to the wall with permanent wall tape to prevent permanent stains from forming
In general, you should clean and dry the area of the wall where the tape will be applied. However, double check the instructions on the wall tape sales package to be sure. Remove the adhesive guard on one side of the tape and press it into the frame. After that, remove the other side of the shield and press the tape firmly against the frame for a few seconds.
- Double check to make sure the tape you choose is strong enough to support the weight of the frame. Most brands of wall tape include a limit on the load they can withstand on the packaging.
- This is a great option if you are renting and don't want to leave a permanent mark on the wall.
Step 7. Hang the frame with nails and wire for a more manageable finish
Hit the hammer into the dowel at a slight upward angle. After that, insert the frame hooks into the nails that are already firmly attached. Use a spirit level to adjust the position of the frame until it is completely straight.
Some types of frames, such as top and bottom retaining frames, are sometimes sold with mounting screws. Position the frame until it is perfectly aligned with the spirit level, then use a screwdriver to screw the screws into the wall
Method 3 of 3: Decorating the Walls with LPs without a Cover
Step 1. Determine the position of the record that will be mounted on the wall
First of all, determine the position of the vinyl record that will be displayed on the wall. You can position them in a parallel row or create a square or rectangular formation. Decide if you want to space each album a bit apart or want the sides to touch each other.
- Placing vinyl records on the wall can scratch the surface. So, make sure you use a record that won't be played again.
- If you want to display vinyl records with brightly colored labels, consider positioning them in a rainbow shape or arranging them so that the color distribution appears even.
- If you have plenty of vinyl records, consider aligning them from one end of the wall to the other to cover the entire area on the wall – even up to the ceiling.
Step 2. Test the layout that you have designed by attaching the vinyl record to the wall using painting tape
Take two sheets of painting tape and roll them up, then stick them to the back of one of the vinyl records. Attach the object to the wall, then repeat the same process on another vinyl record to see the final result of your design.
If you want to make sure the record is straight against the wall, use a spirit level to make a straight line. After that, align the bottom side of the record with this line
Step 3. Use a sheet of wall tape to permanently display the vinyl record
Prepare 2 pieces of 5 cm wall tape and stick them behind the vinyl record. Peel off the protective tape and press the record firmly against the wall to attach it permanently.
- Repeat this process on the other LPs until you get the result you want.
- You can also use tacks and attach them to the center of the record to attach it to the wall. However, this method will leave a hole in the wall.
