Melba toast is a thin, crunchy toast that goes well with dipping sauces, dips, and other toppings. This bread can actually be purchased at the supermarket, it's just that sometimes the texture is too crunchy and crumbles easily so that when you open the package, there are only crumbs. Instead of buying, make your own melba toast at home with better quality
Step
Part 1 of 4: Preparing Toast
Step 1. Preheat the oven, toaster oven or toaster and change the function to “broil”
Move the oven rack to the topmost position. If your oven does not have a “broil” function, simply preheat it to 200 or 230 °C.
Step 2. Choose the right bread
The quality and type of bread will affect the results of the toast. Good bread makes good toast.
- Use raisin and cinnamon buns for sweet toast.
- Use marble rye bread for patterned toast.
- Some chefs recommend using bread that has been around for a while.
- It is better to use bread that is a bit hard in texture than soft bread.
Step 3. Toast the bread
Toast both sides of the bread in the oven, toaster, or toaster. If using an oven, place the bread on the cake pan and then place the cake pan on the top rack of the oven.
- If using the oven, don't forget to turn the bread upside down so that both sides are perfectly toasted.
- Don't bake the bread too long so it doesn't get too brown. The bread will then be baked again.
Step 4. Remove the toast and place it on a cutting board
Place the toast on the cutting board when finished baking. Be careful when lifting the bread. You can use oven mitts to lift the bread.
Part 2 of 4: Cutting Toast
Step 1. Cut the edges of the bread
Use a sharp knife to cut the edges of the bread on all four sides. Some recipes suggest trimming the edges of the bread before baking, but it will be easier to trim the edges after baking.
Step 2. Cut the bread in half
Use a sharp serrated knife to cut the bread in half in half to make two thin slices of toast.
- Make sure to split the bread into soft parts and don't change the dimensions of the bread.
- Place your hands on the bread you want to cut and then cut the bread from the outside to the inside.
- Split the bread while turning the bread until the bread is split in two.
- Do this step while the bread is still warm.
Step 3. Cut the bread into small pieces
Use a knife to cut the bread into the desired shape.
- Ready-made melba toast is usually square or rectangular, but many prefer a triangular shape.
- Determine the size of the toast according to the way it is served. Toast size for hors d'oeuvres is usually smaller than bread for soup companions.
Step 4. Repeat the baking and cutting process
Continue the process of baking and cutting the bread according to the desired portion.
Part 3 of 4: Completion of Melba. Toast Making
Step 1. Place the sliced bread on the cake pan
Place the toasted part on the bottom and the unbaked part on top. Leave a small gap between each loaf so that the bread can be easily removed with a spatula.
Step 2. Spread the bread with oil or butter
Lightly spread the unbaked part of the bread with melted butter or olive oil. For sweet toast, use coconut oil to brush the bread.
Step 3. Toast the top bun
Place the bread in the oven, toaster oven, or toaster. Watch the bread being baked so it doesn't burn.
- If you cut the bread into a triangular shape, the edges of the bread will curl when baking. This is normal, but be sure to remove the bread from the oven before the edges of the bread are scorched.
- Rotate the cake pan so that all the bread is toasted perfectly.
Step 4. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool
Remove the bread from the oven when the surface of the bread has turned brown and the edges of the bread are crisp. Then, chill.
- Use a spatula to remove the bread from the pan and then cool the bread on a plate or cooling rack.
- Use protection, such as oven mitts, when lifting bread or handling cake pans.
Part 4 of 4: Serving Melba Toast
Step 1. Arrange the bread with toppings
You can arrange and prepare the bread with toppings before serving.
- Don't put too much topping on the bread. Adjust the portion is sufficient.
- Stack 1 to 3 additional ingredients for a nice serving. Make a combination of dishes by adding thick ingredients and then pin a toothpick so that they stack up neatly. You can make a combination spread of soft cheese or hummus with olives or tomatoes on top.
Step 2. Serve the melba toast with the dipping sauce
You can serve toast with a delicious dipping sauce.
- Arrange and serve biscuits around the dipping sauce bowl or stack the biscuits on a plate with individual portions of dipping sauce.
- Pair sweet melba toast with a sweet or plain dipping sauce, such as brie cheese.
- Pair savory melba toast with savory dipping sauce, pate or hummus.
Step 3. Serve the melba toast with soup or lettuce
Large slices of toast are perfect for serving with soup or lettuce instead of croutons.
Step 4. Save the uneaten bread
Melba toast can be stored in an airtight container for 3-4 days although it is best served after it is made.
Warning
- Be careful when slicing bread. Don't get hit by the knife.
- Use protection when handling hot objects.
