There are several ways you can watch videos and other iPod content from your TV. You may have to purchase some additional cables and devices, depending on the option you choose.
Step
Method 1 of 3: iPod Composite AV Cable
Step 1. Plug the small end of the cable into the iPod
Look at the very bottom of the iPod, there will be a port (port) that you usually use to plug the device into the charger. The smaller end of the iPod to AV cable has a component connected to this port. Plug the cable into the iPod to continue.
- The cable used is usually an Apple composite AV cable, part number MB129LL. This cable is compatible with all versions of the iPod. On the other hand, iPod AV cables with part number M9765G are only compatible with iPod 5th generation and iPod Photo.
- If you happen to have a non-composite iPod AV cable, you'll need to plug the other end of the iPod cable into the headphone jack.
Step 2. Connect the RCA port to the TV
Look for the red, white, and yellow composite ports on the television. The other end of the cable has two audio connectors and one video connector, which are also red, white, and yellow. Plug the color-coded components of this cable into the appropriate color ports on the television.
If your VCR or other device is currently occupying the composite AV port on your television, you should plug this cable into the video-in and audio-in ports on the front of the VCR, not plug it directly into the TV
Step 3. Switch your TV source
The exact method depends on your television model. You may switch to a specific channel -usually channel 2, 3, or 4- or have to press the Source or Input button on the TV controller until you find an input that says "Video" or something.
For details, see your television's instruction manual
Step 4. Navigate to video settings
Find a way to open the Video Settings menu on the iPod.
- If you're not in the main menu, open it by pressing the Home button on the iPod Touch, or by pressing the center of the click wheel on a standard iPod until you get to the main menu.
- From the main menu, swipe or scroll down until you see Videos. Tap on this option for the iPod Touch, or press the center of the click wheel on a standard iPod.
- From the wider Video menu, swipe or scroll one by one until you find the Video Settings option. Select by pressing or clicking the center.
Step 5. Select TV Out
The TV Out option will be near the top of the Video Settings menu. Press this option on the iPod Touch, or highlight and press the center of the click wheel on a standard iPod.
- The word On will appear. Otherwise, there will be another marker stating that the TV Out option is active.
- Note that you will see the iPod screen mirrored on the TV screen as soon as you complete this step. If the iPod screen doesn't appear on the TV, check the connections on both ends of the cable and make sure that your TV source or channel is correct.
Step 6. Watch the video
Find the video you want to play by scrolling through the iPod menu as usual. Select it, then watch the video from your TV screen.
This way, the video will play on the TV at 480i resolution. It's still far from high definition, but almost as good as standard DVD quality
Method 2 of 3: iPod Dock or Adapter
Step 1. Connect the dock or adapter to the iPod
If you're using a dock, connect your iPod by simply sliding the bottom port into the appropriate slot. The bottom port of the iPod slides directly into the charging component in the dock. If you are using an adapter, you will need to plug the other end of the charging cable into the same charging port on the bottom of the device.
- Make sure you have the right dock or adapter for your device.
- The iPod universal dock and Apple universal dock work for the iPod.
- If you are using a digital AV adapter, you must use an Apple 30 pin digital AV adapter. You cannot use the Lightning adapter because it is not compatible with iPod.
Step 2. Connect the dock or adapter to the TV
The exact port varies depending on the adapter or dock of your choice. Either way, you'll need to find the right cable and connect it to the dock/adapter and TV.
-
If you're using a dock, use the Apple universal dock with an Apple composite AV cable and the iPod universal dock with an iPod AV cable or S-Video cable.
- When using an Apple composite AV cable, plug component video-in and audio-in into the TV, and component video-out and audio-out into the dock. The same goes for the iPod AV cable.
- If you are using an S-Video cable, you should look for the Line-In and Line-Out ports on your dock and TV. These ports are circular and have rows of pins inside. An S-Video cable has a component that fits on one end and can fit into this port on TVs and docks.
- For the adapter, you'll need to find a connector that can connect the square 30-pin port of the adapter to the appropriate port on the television.
- Note that a digital AV adapter and an iPod universal dock with an S-Video cable can both improve the quality of your video. The quality of the dock is better than an S-Video cable. Other dock connections will only achieve 480i video resolution on the TV.
Step 3. Switch your TV source to the proper source
The method you use depends on the TV model. See the instruction manual for more details.
- You may have to switch to a certain channel to change the input, especially for older TVs. Usually this channel is channel 2, 3, or 4.
- For newer TV models, you usually have to press the Source or Input button and switch to the appropriate video input.
Step 4. Change video settings on iPod
Navigate to the video settings on the iPod and select the TV Out option to turn it on.
- From the home screen or main menu, navigate to and select the Video menu.
- In the Video menu, find and select Video Settings.
- Find the TV Out option. Choose to connect the iPod display to the TV. When this option works, the word On will appear with the TV Out option.
Step 5. Watch your video
Select the video as usual from the content on the iPod. The video will play on both the iPod and the TV.
Method 3 of 3: AirPlay Through Apple TV
Step 1. Use Apple TV
Apple TV is the most cost-effective way to use AirPlay. The price of this device is usually around Rp. 1,250,000.
- If your AirPlay speaker, Apple AirPort, or AirPlay-compatible receiver is enabled, you can replace your Apple TV with one of these devices. However, all of these replacement options cost more.
- To note that your iPod must be running iOS 4.2 and above, as well as a reliable wireless network.
Step 2. Set up AirPlay on the TV
Connect Apple TV to a wireless network. Make sure AirPlay is enabled by opening the Settings menu and selecting the AirPlay in your Apple TV option.
When you first connect your Apple TV box to your TV, you're automatically taken through a series of on-screen instructions. When asked, select your home wireless network from the list of available networks, and enter the appropriate password, if required
Step 3. Connect iPod to the same wireless network
Make sure the iPod is connected to the same wireless network as the Apple TV.
- Select Settings from the main screen or home screen of the iPod device.
- Scroll down to the Wi-Fi option and select it.
- Turn on Wi-Fi, and scroll through the list of available wireless networks one by one, until you find your Wi-Fi network. Highlight the network and press the Choose Network option to select it.
- When prompted, enter the network password.
Step 4. Play video on iPod and send to Apple TV
Navigate to the video stored on the iPod as usual. Select the video, then press the Play option. The AirPlay icon will appear while you do this. Click and select Apple TV from the options.
