Hooded jackets that are no longer worn because the neck is too small or the model has changed can be modified, for example by increasing the neck circumference or making a V-shaped neckline to keep the jacket fashionable. If you want to change the style, cut the jacket short and then pair it with trousers or use it as an outer shirt when wearing a tracksuit.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Increasing Jacket Neck Circumference
Step 1. Lay the jacket on a flat place
Prepare a hooded jacket whose neck is too small and then spread it on the table so that the neck does not wrinkle. Place the jacket on the desk or kitchen table instead of on the bed so the sheets don't slash along.
Step 2. Use your fingers to spread both sides of the jacket neck apart
Pull the cuffs of the jacket sleeves in the opposite direction so that the point where the two sides meet the neck is visible.
The meeting of the two sides of the neck will be in the shape of a V
Step 3. Cut diagonally one side of the jacket neck length 2½ cm from the meeting point
Use sharp scissors to make a small slit at the neck of the jacket. Make sure the direction of the gap is parallel to the edge of the outer layer so that the cutouts are not visible.
Do you know?
The cut fabric will unravel a little when the jacket is washed and dried. Work around this by hemming the edges of the fabric.
Step 4. Put on the jacket to find out if the neck of the jacket is comfortable or not
Time to fit the jacket and then determine whether or not the neck circumference is enlarged. If it's still too small, make a new 1cm slit and then put the jacket on again.
If you want a disheveled style, tear the fabric by hand instead of cutting it out
Method 2 of 3: Creating a V-Shaped Jacket Neck
Step 1. Spread the jacket on a flat place
Do not cut the jacket on the floor or bed so that the carpet or bed sheets are not cut off. Place the jacket on the table before cutting.
Place the cutting mat under the jacket to prevent the table from getting scratched
Step 2. Cut the neck of the jacket right in the center of the front by making a vertical slit
Determine how low the neck of the jacket is after the makeover and then cut the center of the front of the neck of the jacket to make a vertical slit to the desired size.
For example, cut the neck of a 13cm jacket to create a steep V-neck. Make a gap of 8 cm if you want to create a gentle V-neck
Step 3. Cut or fold the neckline of the jacket to form a neat diagonal line
Fold the two sides of the neck of the jacket away from each other to form a V. Then, determine whether or not the excess fabric is trimmed or simply folded.
If you want to fold it, you can sew the excess fabric so it doesn't go down your chest
Step 4. Make a few holes in the neckline of the jacket and then insert the string so that the jacket can be tied
For decoration, use a skewer to make 3-4 holes on each side of the jacket neck. Thread the new shoelaces through the holes as if you were tying a shoelace. So, the neck of the jacket can be raised or reduced using a rope.
You can use thick yarn or ribbon to tie the neck of the jacket
Method 3 of 3: Making a Top
Step 1. Decide how short you want the jacket to be cut
Put on a jacket and determine the length of the jacket you want. When measuring, wear the shorts or trousers you want to match with the jacket so you can determine the distance between the bottom hem of the jacket and the waistband of the shorts/longs.
Mark the jacket with fabric chalk so it doesn't get too short after it's cut
Step 2. Hang the jacket and stretch the arms out to the sides
Remove the jacket and hang it on a coat hanger on the wall. Extend the sleeves of the jacket to the sides and glue them to the wall so they don't get in the way when you cut the jacket.
If needed, spread the jacket on the table instead of hanging it
Step 3. Secure the bottom edge of the jacket with a pin or paperclip
Prepare a pin, paper clip, or clothes pin and use it to close the bottom hem of the jacket. Make sure the bottom ends of the jacket are the same height so that the cutouts are neat.
Skip this step if you don't want to cut the jacket neatly
Step 4. Draw straight lines on the jacket using a ruler
Place the ruler in a horizontal position exactly at the mark that was made and then draw a straight line using a marker or fabric chalk as a guide when cutting the jacket.
Tip:
if there is a large pocket on the front side of the jacket, use the seam on the top edge of the pocket as a guide.
Step 5. Cut the jacket along the lines to make it short
Prepare sharp scissors and then cut the jacket according to the lines you just made. Take the jacket off the hanger and put on a hooded jacket with a new look!
Keep in mind that the bottom hem of the jacket will unravel with frequent washing. Overcome this by trimming it
Tips
- This article explains how to cut a jacket that doesn't have a zipper.
- If you want to make a kutung shirt, remove the hood and jacket sleeves. Keep the seams together so the seams don't unravel.
