Flower crowns are the right accessories to display fresh flower arrangements for a season at weddings, garden parties or just to welcome spring and summer. It's simple to make, but it can add a touch of sweetness to any event. Buy or pluck your favorite flower and attach it to a string of wire to create a pretty head accessory.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Making a Simple Wire Crown
Step 1. Measure the circumference of your head and add about 5 cm
If you plan to wear this flower crown over hair that has been styled (for example for a wedding), measurements can be made by inserting the styled hair. Some hairstyles, such as French braids and crown braids (hair that is braided and then placed at the front of the head to resemble a crown), will increase the circumference of the head.
Step 2. Cut the stiff wire to the size of the head circumference
Try using some thicker flowers, such as flowers covered in paper. Such flowers are easy to stick with florist tape. Do not use scissors to cut the wire. Your scissors will be expensive because of it. Better to use a cutting knife.
Step 3. Make a loop of wire and tie the ends together 2.5 cm long
The loop of wire must be sturdy. If it looks flaky or drooping, wrap two or three coils of wire and make a loop. Your loop of wire should be stronger now.
Step 4. Glue the pile of wire ends with florist tape to make it stronger
You can also wrap more adhesive along the loop of wire. Now your wire loop is ready to be decorated. The color will be more the same.
Step 5. Choose a flower and cut the stem 2.5-5 cm down
Use scissors to cut dried or fresh flowers, and use wire cutters to cut plastic flowers. Try to cut the rootstock of the flower ties to the same size. Thus, your crown will be neater.
Try using large, medium, and small flowers. Your crown also looks varied
Step 6. Arrange the flowers according to your favorite pattern
Do not rush to attach the flower to the wire loop. You have to prepare the design first. It will be easier for you to change the design when the flowers are not pasted. Try to think of various design possibilities by playing with the differences in size, shape and color. Here are some design ideas:
- Place the largest flower on top or the front of the crown. The further back, the smaller the flowers used.
- Try to keep all the flowers looking in the same direction, either facing or facing away from the top of the crown.
- You don't have to place the flowers in a row. Insert the space as close or as far as you want.
- Instead of just tucking flowers all over the wire loop, place them only at the top.
Step 7. Glue the first flower on the wire loop
Hold the flower in such a way that the stem is parallel to the wire. Wrap florist tape around the rod and wire. Start wrapping just below the flower and work your way up to 1.25 cm from the end of the stem. Cut the tape and press the edges to seal.
Step 8. Place the second flower directly behind the first flower and secure it with florist tape
Arrange the placement so that it overlaps with the first flower. The closer the spacing between the flowers, the fuller and denser your crown will be. On the other hand, the farther apart you are, the thinner and lighter your crown will be.
Step 9. Continue to attach the flowers and glue them
Wrap it around the circle until there are no more flowers left.
Step 10. Consider adding some ribbon
Fold a few strands of long ribbon in the middle and place them directly behind the stacked wire. Leave about 2.5 cm for the hole just above the wire. Wrap the ends of the tape over the wire and thread it through the hole. Gently pull the tape to tighten it.
Step 11. Try a flower crown and adjust it as needed
If you see a gap or part that you want to cover, slowly separate the flowers, add the other flowers and glue them right away.
Method 2 of 3: Making a Braided Crown
Step 1. Choose flowers with thin stems and limp
Stem length is at least 7.62 cm. You can use one or more types of flowers.
- Daisies and dandelions are often options, but you can also use alyssum and forget-me-nots.
- Flowering herbaceous plants such as mint, thyme, oregano, chamomile, and lavender are also great choices. The flowers will give off a fresh scent.
Step 2. Cut each stem so that it is the same length and trim the leaves
This will make it easier to weave the flowers together and get rid of the unused parts.
Step 3. Put the flowers in a bowl of cold water
The cold water will keep the flowers fresh, while you are busy working on the intertwining crown. Making these flower crowns is time consuming and the flowers you pick may wilt when you are about to use them.
Step 4. Glue the three flowers on a special wire and tie it loosely enough
Wrap the thin wire around the stem a few times, then cut off the rest. Place the wire as close to the flower as possible. Keep all the flowers in a parallel position. If any flowers are placed higher, your crown will look unbalanced. The special wire used to arrange the flowers will tie the flowers together as you weave them.
If you don't have floral wire, use a knot or twine
Step 5. Start weaving the rods
Take the left stem and weave it so that it lies between the middle stem and the right stem. Grab the right stem and weave it so that it lies between the left and middle stems. Continue to weave the stems until you leave 2.5 cm from the ends.
Step 6. Add flowers to the left stem
The new flower should be placed just below the flower that is already in the braided stem.
Step 7. Grab the two rods and intertwine them until they are finally between the middle and right rods
Bring the two rods together. Now, assume the two rods are one piece.
Step 8. Add flowers to the right stem
New flowers should be placed under the existing flowers.
Step 9. Grab the two rods and intertwine them until they are between the left and middle rods
Don't let the two sticks fall apart. Hold the two sticks tightly and think of them as one stick.
Step 10. Keep repeating the last few steps above until you reach the desired length
The part you weave will get thicker as the more flowers you insert.
- Try using different types of flowers. Your crown will be more colorful, full, and beautiful.
- Don't be afraid to include leaves, twigs, or grass in the crown braid.
Step 11. Stop immediately when the flower clump seems too large, even if it is still in centimeters
Don't let the flower clump get too big because both ends will still have to be stacked later. By paying attention to this, your crown will be firmer.
Step 12. Wrap some wire around the end of the flower clump
Place the wire just below the last flower clump. Wrap the wire around the ends of the wreath several times, then trim off the excess with a wire cutter. The wire will hold the flowers together and prevent the braid from unraveling.
Step 13. Connect the two ends of the circuit
Twist the ends so that your crown feels comfortable on your head. Hold both ends while removing the crown.
Step 14. Tie both ends with wire
If the ends are floral, finish the wire ties under the wreath. You just need to tie the rods. Once the crown feels firm, trim off the excess wire. Slowly, tuck the two ends of the wire into the sidelines of the braided rod earlier.
Method 3 of 3: Making a Flower Crown from Headbands
Step 1. Prepare a headband made of plastic or metal
Flowers will be glued to the headband.
Step 2. Consider adding some ribbon to the headband
The addition of a ribbon will disguise the original color of the headband as well as a place to apply glue. You can use any color ribbon, but green will blend more when paired with flowers. If you don't want a green ribbon, try matching the colors with the flowers you want to use. There are two ways of gluing tape:
- Choose a ribbon that is the same width as the headband. Cut 5 cm longer than the headband. Place the ribbon in the center of the top headband, then attach it with glue. There is still 2.5 cm of ribbon remaining at the ends. Apply glue to both ends of the ribbon, then fold it under the headband.
- Put a little hot glue on one end of the headband. Press the end of the tape until it hits the glue. Wrap the ribbon around the headband, like a candy cane. Start from end to end. Just stack it thin. This way, the headband will be completely covered, with no gaps. Glue the ends of the tape with a little glue.
Step 3. Choose some artificial flowers and pull the flowers from the stems
If the flowers don't come off, use a wire cutter. Try to cut it as close to the base of the flower as possible.
Step 4. Remove the bottom of the stem if deemed necessary
Sometimes, when you have to pull the flower off the stem, you will find the base of the flower. This is what prevents your flowers from drooping on the headband. However, if you really want the drooping flower look, just get rid of this part.
However, don't waste too much. Although small in size, this base serves to maintain the shape of the flower. If you cut too much, the flower petals will fall apart
Step 5. Pour hot glue on the base of the first flower
Spread the glue around the base that connects the stem to the flower. Then, pour enough glue at the base of the stem.
Step 6. Press the flower on the surface of the headband
Hold the flower position until the glue begins to dry.
Step 7. Move to the next flower when the glue dries
Try to place the flower as close to the first as possible.
Step 8. Fill in any gaps with smaller leaves or flowers
Apply glue directly to the surface of the headband and gently press the flower or leaf to adhere.
Step 9. Remove the lint of glue before putting on the headband
Sometimes hot glue leaves long fibers like threads. Any pretty headband will look messy with these fibers. Carefully inspect your headband and gently remove the lint.
Tips
- A flower crown is a beautiful and inexpensive gift for a girl. You should also really intend to take the time to prepare this gift for him.
- Daisies and clovers are great choices for making intertwined flower crowns. The stems are thin and limp so they are easy to shape.
- Braided crowns can also be used as bouquets. Keep braiding it until it reaches the length you want and then tie the ends with wire. There is no need to join the two ends together.
- Consider adding some green elements like shrubs, leaves, and grass. The addition of this kind of element makes the crown more textured.
- You can use real or artificial flowers when preparing wire flower crowns or headbands. Dried flowers can also be an option.
- Roses, irises, lilies, and gardenias are perfect for the crown worn at the wedding.
- If using real flowers, store them in a vase or bowl until you are ready to weave or attach them to the wire. This method will keep the flowers fresh, while you do other things.
- If you are making flower crowns the day before the event, store them in the refrigerator overnight to prevent the flowers from wilting.
- If you want a crown that is only made of whole wire, prepare several flower bouquets of 3-5 flowers each. Wrap florist tape around the stem to hold the flower in position, then attach it to the wire.
- For real flowers that are very heavy, you will need to strengthen their position with wire. Start by threading a thin wire into the center of the flower. Make a tiny hook at the end of the wire. Pull the wire to hide the hook inside the petal. Wrap the florist's tape around the wire and rod until they are firmly attached. Remove excess wire and tape.
Warning
- We recommend using artificial flowers if you or the crown wearer has allergies.
- Remember to check the real flowers first as there is a chance for insects or lice to get into your hair.
- Be sure to choose real flowers that don't have a lot of pollen or oil in them. Otherwise, your hair will be messy.
- Crowns made of real flowers will wither in a few hours. Use floral spray to keep the fresh look of flowers longer. This spray can be purchased at a plant store or the flower section of an arts and crafts store.
