Do you want to send someone a letter, or maybe wrap a small gift or a secret message? Of course you have to have something interesting to put in it. To make the gift more personal, you can make an origami envelope. Besides being easy to make, its beautiful design will also bring out your creativity.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Gift Wrap
Step 1. Take a rectangular sheet of paper and position the corners facing you
If you want a colored envelope, the corner of the colored paper should be at the bottom.
Step 2. Fold the paper in half, corner to corner, dividing the rectangle
Step 3. Take the top corner on the first layer of paper and fold it to the bottom edge
Step 4. Fold the right corner one third to the left
It doesn't have to be perfect, but try to be as accurate as possible.
Step 5. Take the left corner and fold it to the other end
Now the bottom will be square.
Step 6. Fold the corner of the flap that overlaps the top of the other flap to the far left
Step 7. Fold the edge of the flap upwards, to the top-center corner
Unfold it. The crease line formed is a guide for the next step.
Step 8. Rotate the origami paper 180 degrees
Now, the point of view will be reversed.
Step 9. Open the end of the flap that was folded earlier
Step 10. Make a rhombic fold at the end of the flap
Flatten it well as this will lock the envelope to keep it closed.
Step 11. Rotate the envelope back to its original position so that it is perpendicular
Or flip it 180 degrees.
Step 12. Fold the top flap to the bottom edge
Or to the square bottom of the envelope.
Step 13. Insert the top flap (the part you just folded down) into the rhombus-shaped “pocket” you created earlier
Step 14. Flatten the paper
Make sure the envelope folds are not open.
Method 2 of 2: Secret Message
Step 1. Take a piece of plain printer paper and write your message
Step 2. Fold it in half like this
Make sure the message is on the inside.
Step 3. Unfold the paper
Step 4. With the writing facing you, take one side of the paper and fold it straight down until the side touches the center crease line
Step 5. Do the same on the other side
Step 6. On the right side of the triangle there is an open part
Fold the section so that it touches the right side of the triangle.
Step 7. Do the same on the other side
Step 8. Then take one side of the paper and fold it vertically so that the side is parallel to the center crease line
Step 9. Do the same on the other side until the result looks like the one in the video
Step 10. Then take one of the triangles
You will see a small pocket under the tip of the triangle. Tuck the end of the triangle into the pocket.
Step 11. Tuck the other end of the triangle into the pocket underneath
Finished. The result will look like the one in the video.
Step 12. If you want to mail this envelope, write the address to the address on the back
Tips
- Use large paper to make larger envelopes. For larger envelopes, you can use wrapping paper or any type of paper, as long as the type of paper folds easily. If the paper is not rectangular, cut it first.
- When folding the flaps in Step 4, you can use the ruler as an aid. Measure the paper on the long side. Divide by three, using a pencil or not, then fold it. You can use mathematical calculations to make them the exact same size.
- Firm folds will make the envelope stronger. To make the crease firm, pinch the crease with both fingernails, then run your finger along the crease.
- Choose a different color of paper on the front and back. Larger envelopes are great for making handmade cards.
- If you don't have origami paper, you can make your own by coloring one side of the rectangle.
- Use a bone folder to make the folds look defined.
