Your concrete walls can be spruced up and match the decor throughout the room. However, there are a few things to consider when painting a concrete wall. You should choose the right type of paint for the concrete walls, see if the walls have been moistened, and apply a primer before painting the concrete walls. Apply the tips below to paint your concrete walls.
Step
Step 1. Choose a paint for your concrete walls
- Choose the right type of paint for an outdoor project. We recommend using paint that is waterproof and resistant to sun exposure. You can find concrete paints specifically made for outdoor projects. Otherwise, oil-based paint will work as well.
- Choose a paint type for an indoor project. Basement concrete paint is widely sold in paint stores and home improvement supplies. Otherwise, you can use interior acrylic paint to paint the concrete walls.
Step 2. Clean the concrete wall
For outdoor walls, use a power washer machine to clean dust and dirt on the walls. For indoor projects, scrub the walls with soapy water and a brush to clean the walls.
Step 3. Repair cracks and defects in the walls with concrete putty
Read and follow the guidelines for mixing concrete putty. Fill in the hole and use a small trowel to level the putty so that it is level with the wall.
Step 4. Check for moisture on the walls
Walls that are not sealed properly will not be able to adhere the paint well.
- Stick the plastic sheet on the wall. Make sure your plastic sheet is airtight against the wall.
- Check the plastic on the wall after 24 hours. If the plastic gets wet with water, you will need to seal the concrete walls. If the plastic is not wet, the concrete wall is sealed.
Step 5. Seal the concrete wall
Apply 1 coat of concrete sealer and let dry overnight. You can buy this sealer at a hardware or home improvement store.
Step 6. Apply one coat of concrete primer
You can use a roller or brush to apply the paint. Leave the paint for 24 to dry. If you can see the wall through the primer, apply another coat.
Step 7. Paint the walls with concrete paint
Paint must be applied at least 3 thin layers. You can use a roller, brush, or spray paint on the walls. Your smear should not leave streaks or streaks. Leave it for 24 hours to dry.
Step 8. Apply the concrete paint sealer
Apply a coat of sealing, allow to dry, then apply another coat of sealing. The paint seal will help the paint stick to the wall and last longer.
Tips
- Keep all your painting supplies out of the reach of children and pets. Paint fumes are harmful to your health. In addition, they can smear paint on the walls while they are being painted.
- Put on your safety gear, such as work gloves and safety glasses.
- Make sure your work area has good airflow. Primary concrete paint, and sealing products have a very strong odor.
- Wear old clothes that can be soiled. Your clothes will be stained with paint while working on this project
