How to Rotate a Rolex Watch (with Pictures)

Rolex is a high quality and luxury watch manufactured by the Rolex company. Rolex watches are a status symbol, which makes them the greatest luxury hands in the world. Many modern Rolex watches are equipped with a self-winding mechanism, which can turn the main spring to move the watch. As long as the clock is moving, it has power. This is known as "perpetual movement." However, these "perpetual" watches can stop if they don't move for too long. If this is the case with your Rolex watch, follow these few simple steps to rotate it, as well as reset the time and date.

Part 1 of 2: Playing Your Rolex

Step 1. Place your watch on a soft, flat surface

It costs a lot to repair and replace a Rolex watch, so protect your watch by turning it in a safe place so it doesn't slip out of your hand.

Step 2. Remove the clock crown

The crown of the watch is located on the side of the clock next to the number 3. Turn the crown counterclockwise until you feel it release from the last clasp. It will be slightly sticking out from the side of the watch.

Step 3. Turn your Rolex watch

With your thumb and forefinger, gently turn the crown clockwise 360 degrees, or one complete turn, at least 30 to 40 times. Thus, your watch is fully rotated.

If you only turn the crown clockwise a few times, your watch will not turn perfectly.
Rolex designed its watch so that it is not possible to rotate too much. The device attached to the watch will prevent you from turning the Rolex too much.

Step 4. Attach the crown back to the Rolex watch

Return the crown to its normal position by gently pressing the crown against the watch and securing it back to the clasp, turning it clockwise. Your Rolex watch is now finished playing.

Step 5. Be patient

If you've finished turning your watch but your watch doesn't start moving as soon as it normally would, leave it for a while or turn it back and forth on your wrist. You may need to move your watch a bit for it to work properly.

Step 6. Get moving

Rolex watches that remain motionless for 24 - 48 hours usually will not self-wind and must be turned manually. Keep wearing your Rolex watch if you don't want to turn it over and over again.

Step 7. Bring your watch in for repair if it still won't move

If your Rolex watch doesn't move after you turn it on, you may be in for a more serious problem. Take your watch to an authorized watch store near you who can have it checked. If your watch is damaged, this authorized shop will send your Rolex to the manufacturer in Switzerland for repair.

Part 2 of 2: Setting the Date and Time

Step 1. Set the date and time on your watch

Now that your Rolex is playing properly, you should reset the time and date. Different Rolex models have different ways of setting the date and time, so you should use the method that suits your Rolex model.

Step 2. Set the date on the date, and the date on the just non-quickset model. Remove the crown by turning it counterclockwise until it is sticking out of the sides. Pull the crown slightly until it reaches the second position and set the date. You can drag it one more time to reach the third position (when the crown is fully protruding) to set the time.

To set the date, from the second position, turn the crown clockwise or counterclockwise past 12 twice, and then continue rotating until you reach the appropriate date.
To set the time, from the third position, turn the crown clockwise or counterclockwise until it reaches the appropriate time.
When you have finished setting the time and date, press the crown back in and screw it back clockwise.

Step 3. Set the time on the date, and the date on the just quickset model

Remove the crown by turning it counterclockwise until it is sticking out of the sides. Pull the crown slightly until it reaches the second position and set the date. You can pull it one more time to reach the third position (when the crown is fully extended) to set the time.

To set the date, from the second position, turn the crown until it reaches the correct date. For women's watches, you must turn the watch clockwise to set the date. For men's watches, you must turn the watch counterclockwise to set the date.
To set the time, from the third position, turn the crown either clockwise or counterclockwise until you reach the correct time.
When you are done setting the time and date, press the crown back in, and secure it by turning it clockwise.

Step 4. Set the time in days on the non-quickset model

Remove the crown by turning it counterclockwise until it is sticking out of the sides. Pull the crown slightly until it reaches the second position and set the date. You can drag one more time to reach the third position (when the crown is fully protruding) to set the time.

To set the date, from the second position, turn the crown clockwise or counterclockwise past 12 twice, and then set the correct date by continuing to rotate in the same direction.
To set the time, from the third position, turn the crown clockwise or counterclockwise until it reaches the appropriate time.
When you are done setting the time and date, press the crown back in and secure it by turning it clockwise.

Step 5. Set the time in days on the single quickset model

Remove the crown counterclockwise until it is sticking out of the sides. Pull the crown slightly until it reaches the second position, then adjust the date. You can drag one more time to reach the third position (when the crown is fully extended) to set the time and day.

To set the date, from the second position, turn the crown of the clock clockwise or counterclockwise until you find a suitable date.
To set the day, from the third position, turn the crown of the clock clockwise or counterclockwise past 12 twice, and then turn the crown until it reaches the correct day.
To set the time, from the third position, turn the crown clockwise or counterclockwise until you get to the correct time.
When you're done setting the time and date, press down on the crown again, and secure it by turning it clockwise.

Step 6. Set the time in days on the double quickset model

Remove the crown counterclockwise until it is sticking out of the sides. Pull the crown slightly until it reaches its second position, and set the date and day. You can pull the crown again to reach the third position (when the crown is fully protruding) to set the time.

To set the day, from the second position, turn the crown counterclockwise.
To set the date, from the second position, turn the crown clockwise.
To set the time, from the third position, turn the crown clockwise or counterclockwise until you reach the correct time.
When you're done setting the time and date, press down on the crown again, and secure it by turning it clockwise.

Step 7. Set the time on the Oyster Perpetual, Submariner (no date), Cosmograph Daytona or Explorer (no date) model

Remove the crown and turn it counterclockwise until it is sticking out of the sides. The Oyster Perpetual, Cosmograph Daytona and some Submariner and Explorer models do not come with a date display. You can only pull the crown up to its second position to set the time on the clock.

To set the time, from the fully protruding position, turn the crown either clockwise or counterclockwise until you reach the correct time. The seconds hand will stop and will only move again after the hour crown returns to the second position.
When finished setting the time and date, press the crown back in, and secure it by turning it clockwise.

Step 8. Set the time on the Submariner date quickset, GMT-Master quickset or Yacht-Master models

Remove the crown by turning it counterclockwise until it is sticking out of the sides. Pull the clock crown slightly until it reaches the second position and set the date. You can drag it one more time to reach the third position (when the crown sticks out perfectly) to set the time.

To set the date, from the second position, turn the crown clockwise until it reaches the correct date.
To set the time, from the third position turn the crown either clockwise or counterclockwise to set the correct time. The seconds hand will stop while the crown is in the third position, but will start moving again when you press it back into the second position.
When you're done setting the time and date, press down on the crown again, and secure it by turning it clockwise.

Step 9. Set the time on the GMT-Master II quickset or Explorer II model

Remove the crown by turning it counterclockwise until it is sticking out of the sides. Pull the crown slightly until it reaches the second position and set the date. You can pull the crown one more time to reach the third position (when the crown is fully protruding) to set the time.

To set the date, from the second position, move the hour hand to 12 twice in one hour rotation by turning the crown clockwise or counterclockwise.
To adjust the hour hand, from the second position, move the crown clockwise or counterclockwise to move the hour hand in one hour rotation until you reach the correct time. The clock will continue to move as usual as long as you set it.
To set the time, from the third position, turn the crown clockwise or counterclockwise until it reaches the appropriate time. The seconds hand will stop automatically when the crown is in this position, but will move again after the crown returns to the second position.
When you are done setting the time and date, press the crown back in and secure it by turning it clockwise.
