Liquid foundation is one of the beauty equipment that should not be abandoned. The problem is, liquid foundations on the market are usually very expensive, even those sold in drugstores can't be said to be cheap. In addition, many commercial liquid foundations contain harmful ingredients that are best avoided. Luckily, with a few inexpensive basic ingredients, you can be creative in making your own liquid foundation at home! Another advantage is that you can customize the color and coverage you want.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using Moisturizer and Powder Foundation
Step 1. Prepare a small container to mix the ingredients
It is recommended to make a new foundation every day, or until you can find the right ratio of ingredients. Start with a small amount that fits into the container you're mixing in, such as a contact lens case or lip balm.
If you don't finish your foundation, close the container tightly and use the rest to fix your makeup for the day. Wash the container and make a new foundation for tomorrow's use
Step 2. Sprinkle the powder foundation into the container
Start with 1-2 pinches of powder. Keep in mind that you are only making small portions for 1-2 uses. For example, if you are using a contact lens case, you can simply sprinkle the powder lightly so that it covers the entire bottom of the case. You can always add more if you need to!
Use a plastic spoon or wooden spatula to scoop out the powder foundation and pour it into the container. Try not to touch the cosmetics with your fingers, as the natural oils on your fingers will affect the color
Step 3. Add an equal amount of facial moisturizer into the container
Facial moisturizer is gentle. Do not use body lotion or other harsher ingredients for this purpose or you will end up with clogged pores and breakouts.
- If you are prone to breakouts, use an oil-free moisturizer.
- If your favorite facial moisturizer contains sunscreen, that's a bonus!
Step 4. Mix the two ingredients with a fork or small stirrer
Stir in moisturizer and powder foundation until completely combined. The texture of the foundation should be soft, without lumps.
Step 5. Perform a wrist or jawline test to determine coverage
Mixing moisturizer and powder foundation in a balanced ratio will produce a foundation with medium coverage. If you have normal skin and don't need heavy makeup, a foundation with medium coverage is usually perfect. Take a small amount of foundation with a brush and brush it on the inside of your wrist or along your jawline to see how it looks and feels on your skin.
Make sure you apply the foundation to your skin to get an exact idea of how it looks
Step 6. Adjust the coverage, if necessary, by adding more powder or lotion
Adding more moisturizer will result in a thinner foundation and provide a light coverage. Adding more powder will result in a foundation with perfect coverage. It's a good idea to add a little at a time, stir, then test before adding.
Step 7. Apply the foundation with a brush or sponge as usual
Use a homemade liquid foundation in the same way as a commercial foundation. Once applied to the face, and you are satisfied with the results, close the container tightly again. You can take it with you during your activities and use the rest to fix your makeup (if necessary).
Step 8. Make more liquid foundation (optional)
If you've got the comparison right and you like the results, feel free to make more! Use an old foundation bottle or a clean glass/plastic container to store it. Don't forget to shake it well before use.
- You can use a kitchen scale to ensure the right amount of ingredients and get a balanced mixture.
- Make sure you don't make too many at once so they don't break before you can finish them.
Method 2 of 3: Using Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, and Powdered Mineral Powder
Step 1. Add shea butter, jojoba oil and mineral powder in a double boiler
This mixture is perfect for dry skin types because it contains moisturizing ingredients. Take teaspoon of shea butter, teaspoon of jojoba oil, and 1 teaspoon of powdered mineral powder. Put all the ingredients in a double boiler on the stove.
Step 2. Use medium-low heat
Slowly heat the ingredients and stir the mixture occasionally. Continue heating until the shea butter melts. Turn off the stove and remove the pot.
Step 3. Stir the mixture until smooth, then pour into an airtight container
Use a stirrer or spoon to mix the ingredients. You should get a soft textured foundation, with an even color. Pour the foundation into a clean, airtight container. You can use a small Tupperware or an empty foundation bottle.
- Do not cover the container until the foundation has completely cooled.
- Foundations will remain in a liquid state if stored at room temperature.
Step 4. Allow the foundation to cool before using
Do not apply cosmetics warm; chill first. Use a regular cosmetic sponge to apply the foundation. This recipe will yield enough foundation to last for a few weeks (more or less), depending on daily use.
Method 3 of 3: Coloring Your Homemade Foundation
Step 1. Add a little cocoa powder to make the color of the foundation darker
Add little by little, stirring until well combined, and check for color changes before adding. Use a plastic spoon to stir. Do this process until you get the color you want.
Cocoa powder naturally darkens the color, without adding a warm hue
Step 2. Use cinnamon to add warmth and a hint of dark color
If you have warm skin tones, use cinnamon and cocoa powder to add some warmth to your foundation color. Gradually add a pinch of cinnamon powder, stirring well with a plastic spoon before adding more.
- If you want to use a liquid foundation like bronzer, adding extra cinnamon will give it a warm quality.
- You can also experiment with nutmeg, but it has to be ground first.
Step 3. Experiment with other spices to change the color of the foundation
Muira Puama bark, sassafras bark, cardamom powder, and sea buckthorn fruit powder are less common spices, but can be used to make foundation colors darker. If you can get your hands on the spice, it can't hurt to give it a try! Next time, if you happen to stop by a health food store, pick a few spices and see how it goes.
Step 4. Add mica powder for a shiny bronzer effect
Choose a gold or bronze colored mica powder to create a beautiful golden brown sheen. Sprinkle some mica powder, stir, and test the resulting color. Add more powder as needed, and keep mixing until you get the desired shine effect.
- Mica powder can be purchased at beauty stores or online. Make sure you buy mica powder that is intended for cosmetics.
- If you want a cool sheen, similar to a highlighter, use silver or pearl mica powder.
Step 5. Add zinc oxide to foundation for sunscreen
The zinc oxide will provide sun protection on the foundation. Purchase uncoated, nonnano, and nonmicron zinc oxide. Zinc is a thick material so it will increase the power of cosmetic cover. In addition, the addition of zinc will make the skin look smooth and soft, reduce inflammation, fight acne, and lock in moisture.
- Zinc oxide is safe for skin, but wear a dust mask and gloves when you handle it. Inhaling zinc powder can cause an overdose because the lungs trap zinc oxide and then release it into the bloodstream.
- 28 grams of zinc oxide will give you an SPF of about 20.
- You may need to experiment a bit to find the right zinc oxide composition for your recipe of choice. Usually, you need about 1-4 teaspoons.
