Moisturizing is one part of the standard skin care routine, especially facial skin. This process helps restore moisture to the facial skin so that the skin feels smoother. By keeping the skin moist, its elasticity is also maintained. The signs of aging can be avoided in the long run. Determine your skin type, choose the right products, and follow specific care instructions to properly moisturize your skin.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Recognizing Facial Skin Type
Step 1. Recognize normal skin through the absence of skin problems
Normal skin is neither too dry nor too oily. If you have normal skin, your pores will be less visible and you're usually less prone to breakouts, irritation, or sensitivity to skin care products. Your skin looks brighter and cleaner if you have normal skin.
Usually, you don't need special care if you have normal skin. However, you still need to use a moisturizer after cleansing your face
Step 2. Watch for signs of dry skin
If you have dry facial skin, it will feel dry and may stiffen when the facial muscles are moved or the face is stretched. Dry skin may appear “scaly” and sometimes peel. Cracked or cracked areas that can bleed may also appear on the skin. You can clearly see that your skin needs body fluids or moisture when it's dry.
- Many people experience severe dry skin in winter due to climate change.
- The surface of the skin may appear dull, and you may see fine lines on your face when your skin is dry.
Step 3. Recognize the characteristics of oily skin
After cleansing, oily skin usually looks shiny more quickly. The surface seemed to be glistening very quickly. Glossy on the face is caused by the production of oil on the surface of the skin. Pores can also be seen easily in the center of the face. If you have oily skin, chances are you will experience a lot of acne on your skin.
Oily skin is more common in children or teenagers. Skin usually becomes drier with age
Step 4. Find out if you have combination skin type
If your face is only oily in the “T” area (the area around your nose, eyes, eyebrows, and forehead) but dry elsewhere, you may have combination skin.
- If you have combination skin, you need to apply moisturizer to different areas appropriately. Follow oily skin care instructions to moisturize the “T” area, and dry skin care instructions to treat other areas of the face.
- Combination skin usually has larger pores than normal skin because it is more open. The condition of the pores like this often causes acne to appear more often.
Part 2 of 3: Moisturizing Dry Facial Skin
Step 1. Don't wash your face too often
If you do it too often, your face will become drier. Greater exposure of water to the skin will not add moisture to the skin. When washing your face, it's a good idea to use warm (not hot) water.
- When bathing or washing your face, use warm water instead of hot water.
- Use a mild face wash that doesn't contain added fragrance.
- Use micellar water products to remove makeup products and dirt if you want to clean your face without water.
- Do not use hot or cold water when washing your face. Exposure to extreme temperatures actually makes the skin more dry and irritated. In fact, blood vessels on the face can burst.
Step 2. Exfoliate using a mild chemical exfoliant
Do not use exfoliants with coarse grains (eg peanut shells or sugar). Instead, choose a lighter product, such as a chemical exfoliant. Products like this help remove dry and dead skin cells so that a smoother skin layer can be seen. Apply the product to the skin in small circular motions. Rinse your face thoroughly with warm water to remove the product, then pat your skin dry by patting a towel over your face.
- Use a moisturizer after you're done exfoliating.
- Only exfoliate once or twice a week.
Step 3. Use a moisturizing cream formulated for dry skin
Choose a moisturizing product that is labeled for dry to very dry skin (“dry to very dry skin”). in the morning/afternoon, and thicker moisturizing products (eg intensive moisturizers) at night.
- If you want to use natural ingredients, such as oil, choose olive or coconut oil.
- You should also look for moisturizing products with ingredients that are beneficial for dry skin, such as olive oil, jojoba, shea butter, urea, lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, lanolin, glycerol, vaseline, and mineral oil.
- Creams are better for dry skin than lotions because they contain more oil so they can lock in moisture and moisturize dry skin more effectively.
Step 4. Apply moisturizer immediately after washing your face
It is important that you apply moisturizer immediately after washing your face so that the cream can retain the remaining moisture after washing your face. Apply the product evenly and leave it on for a few minutes until the face feels more moisturized. After that, you can apply makeup.
Don't use too much cream as it will just waste the product. The addition of cream does not necessarily provide greater benefits
Step 5. Use sunscreen every day
Moisturizing sunscreen with a broad spectrum (blocks the effects of UVA and UVB rays) can protect the skin from burns and damage that triggers skin aging, as well as prevent dry skin.
Use sunscreen as a morning moisturizer. You don't need any other products, but if you want to supplement your sunscreen with added moisturizer, use a sunscreen with SPF first. Wait a few minutes for it to dry, then apply a moisturizer afterwards
Step 6. Use a face mask
Face masks can treat a variety of skin problems, including dry skin. For dry skin, do not use the mask more than twice a month. If you want to relieve dry skin, choose a product that contains one of the following ingredients:
- Olive oil
- Argan oil
- Coconut oil
- Honey
- Egg yolk
- Carrot
- Tomatoes
Part 3 of 3: Moisturizing Oily Facial Skin
Step 1. Wash your face twice a day
If you have oily skin, you need to wash your face more often than people with dry skin. It is recommended that you wash your face twice a day with a cleansing soap. However, do not wash your face more than the recommended frequency. Otherwise, the skin will become even more oily. Also, don't use hot water or steam to clean your face, as they can strip important fatty acids from the layers of your skin.
- Since oily skin is the type of skin that is prone to breakouts (due to excess oil building up in the pores), it's a good idea to use a face wash that contains tea tree oil/lemon juice/salicylic acid.
- Washing your face too often makes your skin dry. This condition actually encourages the skin to produce more oil to replace the lost oil.
Step 2. Exfoliate 1-2 times a week
Choose a chemical exfoliant formulated for oily skin. Apply the product on the skin in small circular motions, then rinse your face with warm water. Dry your skin by patting a clean towel on your face, then use a moisturizer afterwards.
Don't use mechanical exfoliants, which usually contain peanut shells and other potentially irritating ingredients. Stick to chemical exfoliants for a more skin-friendly option
Step 3. Use a moisturizing lotion for oily skin
Look for products labeled "for oily to normal skin" (for normal-oily skin). Just because your skin is oily doesn't mean you shouldn't use moisturizer. You just need to use the right product. Only use water-based products. Don't let your skin make your skin even more oily by using oil/fat based products.
- Moisturizing lotions are more suitable for oily skin because they don't contain the added oils that are usually found in moisturizing creams.
- Some people suggest using various types of oil to clean oily facial skin. However, most experts say that this method is actually more dangerous because it often triggers the appearance of acne and various other skin damage.
Step 4. Don't forget to use sunscreen
To protect your skin and prevent skin damage or burns, make sure you use sunscreen every day. If your skin is oily, choose an oil-free product specifically formulated for facial skin.
- The sunscreen used must have a broad spectrum coverage and an SPF of at least 30.
- If you use sunscreen, usually the product is enough to moisturize oily skin. You don't need to use another moisturizer after that.
Step 5. Improve the appearance of facial skin with a face mask
Regular use of facial masks/exfoliants makes skin look and feel smoother and cleaner. For oily skin, follow this mask treatment a maximum of twice a week. You can use commercial masks or homemade masks. Both are very beneficial for facial skin.
- For more information, read the article on how to make a natural face mask.
- For oily skin, use a mask that contains one of the following ingredients: lemon, avocado, egg white, cucumber, or milk.
