The Koran is a holy book because it is the word of God. Since it was revealed in the 7th century, the Koran has not changed. Memorizing only a few verses of the Koran will have great rewards in the Hereafter. Memorizing it is also important to maintain the sanctity of God's word. That is why you need to know correctly how to successfully memorize verses of the Koran.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Preparation
Step 1. Ablutions
You must perform ablution before touching the Koran, according to the four main schools of fiqh. However, you don't need to perform ablution before reading the Koran online or repeating rote memorization.
Step 2. Look for the Koran and its translation in a language you understand
You can get it from the nearest mosque or from a bookstore. You can also access it from the internet. Some good sites are:
- Quran Explorer
- Quran.com
- The Koran of the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia
Part 2 of 3: Memorization
Step 1. Read the verse you want to memorize
Familiarize yourself not only with the Arabic text but also with the translation. This step will help you understand the context of the verse, and will make memorization easier.
Step 2. Recite the verse six times while looking at the Koran
Read carefully, paying attention to each letter and its pronunciation. If you have a color-coded Quran, take advantage of its color by perfecting your tajwid (pronunciation).
Step 3. Recite the verse five times from rote
If you forget the verse, go back to the previous step, but if you just need to take a quick look at the beginning, and know how the verse goes, you can go back to the verse.
Step 4. Proceed to the next paragraph and follow the steps as above
Step 5. Recite the first and second verses together from rote
Step 6. Continue to memorize the entire verse you want to memorize using the above procedure
Don't forget to read the full translation. This step will help you understand what the verse means so you don't get lost reading it.
Step 7. Repeat the memorized verse three times
Do this until you are sure everything is memorized.
Step 8. Have someone test you
It can be difficult to test yourself, and sometimes there is a little bit of boredom while memorizing yourself. So ask someone who is sincere, willing and able to read the Quran to test you. If you make a mistake, don't worry! Keep reading to him until you're sure you've memorized it correctly.
Step 9. Repeat all memorized verses and pages
Once you've memorized a few pages, make sure you stop and ask someone to test you before moving on to memorizing the next page. Remember, there's no point in continuing to memorize if you've forgotten everything you've learned before.
Part 3 of 3: Quick Memories
Step 1. Read a verse 20 or 10 times
Don't read too fast as you may stutter and have trouble pronouncing the words.
Step 2. Recite the verse five times from rote
Step 3. Again, read the verse five times
Read the translation to find out what it means.
Step 4. Recite from rote
Have someone test you after studying half a page.
Try reading a new verse while praying; This step is great for practice
Tips
- Read everything you have memorized before going to bed.
- The best time to memorize the Quran is after Fajr because your mind is still clear and you are not worrying about anything.
- Read the verses that you have memorized in and after the fardu and sunnah prayers.
- Start today because your will will not be stronger a month from now.
- The best place to memorize the Koran is in a mosque, but if that's not possible, do it in a quiet place with as few distractions as possible.
- Start slowly so you don't get discouraged.
- Another trick is to download the memorized verses and play them on your computer's music player continuously. That way the Quranic verse will be embedded in your subconscious mind. Listen to the reciter whose voice you like.
- Memorize only about 4-5 verses daily. Too many verses will overwhelm you. Memorize for about 1 hour, then take 30 minutes to review.
- Start with short letters like juz amma (30th chapter), which are easier to memorize.
- Learn the tajwid (pronunciation). Look for the color coded Koran because it includes the rules of tajwid. Listen to reciters with good recitation to familiarize yourself with the correct way of reading the Koran.
- Don't worry if you're not good at reading the Koran; what matters is your intention. Remember, Allah will reward those who struggle to read the Qur'an with a double reward.
- Take a Quran study class for help. Learning it with friends and other people can make the experience more enjoyable.
Warning
- Always keep a drinking water bottle near you so you don't move away from the Koran. If you stop or take a break, chant the name of Allah before continuing.
- Stay away from sin and repent sincerely for your past sins.
- Make memorization a routine, not an occasional activity.
- Whenever you are disturbed, ask Allah for protection from Satan's temptations and start by chanting Allah's name.
