This wikiHow teaches you how to add mods (modifications) to the desktop and mobile versions of Minecraft. You can't add mods to the console edition of Minecraft or Windows 10, but you can run it on Pocket Edition and Java Edition. If you want to add mods to your Android device or iPhone, first install a third-party app.
Step
Method 1 of 3: On Desktop Computer
Step 1. Install Minecraft Forge
If you want to run the mod on a Mac or Windows computer, install the latest version of Minecraft Forge. This app allows Minecraft to use the mods you download.
Step 2. Download the desired mod
Visit the Minecraft mod site, then find the mod you want and download the mod. Some of the popular Minecraft mod provider sites include:
- You can also type a certain type of mod (eg "tanks") followed by "minecraft mod" into the Google search engine and search for the results.
- Be sure not to download anything that the website community has not guaranteed safety for.
Step 3. Select the mod file
Look for the newly downloaded mod file in your computer's storage location. Next, click on the file to copy it. The mod file is a Java logo on a white background.
If you downloaded the mod file as a ZIP folder, extract the file first before selecting it
Step 4. Copy the file
You can do this by pressing Ctrl+C (for Windows) or Command+C (for Mac).
Step 5. Run the Minecraft launcher
Double-click the Minecraft icon, which is a block of dirt with grass on top. The Minecraft Launcher will run and be updated when it is out of date.
As of January 2018, the latest version of launcher is 1.12.2
Step 6. Click Launch options
This tab is in the upper-right side of the launcher window.
If this tab does not exist, first click in the upper right side
Step 7. Click on Latest release
It's in the middle of the window.
Step 8. Click the green "Game directory" arrow
It's on the right side of the launcher window, opposite the "Game directory" button. This will open the folder where all the contents of the Minecraft game are stored.
Step 9. Open the "mods" folder
Double click the "mods" folder to do so. If the "mods" folder doesn't exist, create it:
- Windows - Click Home, choose New folder, type mods, then press Enter.
- Mac - Click File, choose New Folder, type mods, then press Return.
Step 10. Paste your mod file
Click an empty space in the "mods" folder, then press Command+V (Mac computers) or Ctrl+V (Windows). The mod files will be moved to that folder.
Step 11. Close and reopen the launcher
At this point, you can also close the mods folder.
Step 12. Click the "Profile" arrow
It's to the right of the big green button that says PLAY. A pop-up menu will be displayed.
Step 13. Click on “minecraft forge” option
This option is the Minecraft Forge version number. This action allows you to load the mod.
Step 14. Click the PLAY button
Minecraft will load, along with any mods that have been added to the "mods" folder. When you start the game (with a new world or an existing one), the mod will automatically run.
- If you want to stop using the mod, return to your Minecraft profile in the launcher by clicking on the arrow that says "Profile", clicking Minecraft, and clicking PLAY.
- If you delete the mod files in the "mods" folder, they will also disappear from Minecraft.

Some mods have more than one download link. If this is the case, select the individual links
Step 6. Tap OK when prompted
You will be asked if you want to download it because the file is from an unknown source. Tap OK to continue the download.

If you download more than one file, go back to the folder Download again and select another file as well.
Step 15. Create a new world
