You can make your own spider repellent for use in your home and garden. Many natural spider repellent ingredients will not harm you, your family or pets. Natural spider repellents need to be applied more often than pesticides, but they are safer to use and have a pleasant smell. All spiders have a sense of taste on the tips of their feet and hate certain scents, so use those scents to get rid of spiders, both indoors and outdoors.
Step
Step 1. Add 5 drops of essential oil and 5 drops of natural dishwashing liquid to 1 liter of water
Here are some essential oils that work well as spider repellents (especially citrus):
- Orange
- tea tree
- lavender
- Cinnamon
- Peppermint
- Citronella
Step 2. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and shake it well
Step 3. Spray on areas inside your house where you see spiders
For an overall eviction, spray a natural repellent along the base of the house post or at the corner where the wall and ceiling meet.
Step 4. Reapply after one week
Step 5. Use orange juice as a repellent
Many spiders and insects are exterminated by the citrus scent. You can buy orange juice (no sugar) or mix any citrus juice with water and put the mixture in a spray bottle. Find orange oil spray at auto parts or beauty supply stores that sells air freshener. Use one made from real orange oil. Stay away from plastics, as they can damage them, and experiment on painted surfaces before using them.
- Rub the top of the counter with the orange juice mixture. You can also scrub the inside of drawers and cabinets with this mixture.
- Spray the lemon juice mixture on your doors and windowsills.
- Practice garden spider control by spraying citrus juice on your plants. You can also put lemon, orange or lime peels in your garden to get rid of spiders.
Step 6. Purchase and apply a bottle of ground cinnamon on one of the surfaces
Find the cinnamon powder that has the most pungent aroma. Cinnamon has a pleasant aroma, but it is effective at repelling spiders.
Step 7. Consider making a spicy insect repellent, especially if you don't like citrus scents
- Add 1/2 cup (118 ml) of vinegar and 2 tablespoons (28.3 g) of chili powder or chili sauce to 1 liter of water and beat until ingredients are combined.
- Pour the mixture into a spray bottle.
- Spray this hot liquid on cobwebs and all the places where spiders often make nests.
Step 8. Practice spider population control outdoors using a combination of plants and nuts that spiders don't like:
- Place chestnuts around the edges of houses, garages, sheds and outbuildings on your plot.
- Plant mint and lavender plants near or under your windows. Spiders don't like both scents, so this plant will prevent them from nesting.
Step 9. Make a natural repellent spray to use in your garden and yard
- Boil 4 liters of water.
- Add 1 packet of tobacco to the water and let the tobacco soak until the water cools to room temperature.
- Transfer this mixture to a clean container.
- Add 1 cup (225 ml) of tobacco juice and 1/2 cup (118 ml) of lemon dish soap to the spray hose.
- Attach a spray filled with spider repellent mixture to the garden hose and spray it in your garden and yard. This liquid will also repel mosquitoes and other pests. This is not a very good idea as it will also kill any beneficial insects in your garden, such as lady bugs and beetles. Spiders also provide an advantage in your garden – eating lots of mosquitoes and plant pests.
Step 10. Purchase a bag of Diatomaceous earth, which you can usually find at pet food stores or online
You must buy *ONLY* which contains 100% diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth is produced from tiny sharp plankton that have been coated in silicon that can dehydrate small animals and die within hours. This is dangerous for people and pets – although it will make you sneeze.
- You should not filter pools with diatomaceous earth.
- Put it in a pressable bottle.
Step 11. Perform evictions in areas outside your home
Close all windows and doors, spray orange cider oil around 4 sides of all windows and doors. Spray a little cinnamon immediately. You can use a fine, unused makeup brush to help with vertical and top application. Spray directly on the brush and spray on the area where it is needed.
Step 12. Perform evictions in areas within your home
Sprinkle lines of diatomaceous earth inside the window, as close as possible. Diatomaceous earth is a very fine powder and is easily carried by the wind, but must be in a dry area. When the weather cools or warms up, keep the windows closed. This will kill any animal that has an exoskeleton (hard shell) that walks in. Spray the orange juice on a cotton ball to apply to the top and inner sides of the canal to direct it to the diatomaceous earth.
Tips
- Be careful using Tea tree oil as it is highly toxic to cats and dogs!
- Sprinkle or buff window sills and furniture with a lemon-scented wood polish. Spiders hate the smell of lemons and rubbing it once a week on a wooden surface will help you get rid of spiders.
- Place potted mint and lavender plants in your home near a window that gets sunlight to prevent spiders from entering the room.
- If the recipe contains solid, insoluble ingredients, remove them from the spray bottle; or the spray may become clogged.
- Keep your home clean and free of food debris; spiders tend to be attracted to any kind of food supply, especially those in warm and humid places.
- You can buy a spray bottle or wash and reuse any type of spray bottle.
- Using diatomaceous earth in your garden can attract cucumber and other pests.
Warning
- Keep the tobacco juice mixture out of the reach of children and pets.
- Be sure to wash and rinse thoroughly all spray bottles that have previously been filled with the chemical.
- Do not spray tobacco juice near tomato plants. All forms of tobacco can harm tomato plants.
