Turnips, which can be purchased at your local vegetable store or farm stand, are nutritious and can provide an unexpected burst of flavor in almost any dish. Turnip has a turnip-like cut but looks more like a potato when cooked. Turnips can be sautéed, grilled, boiled, grilled, or even enjoyed raw. If you want to know how to cook turnips in different ways, just follow these steps.
Ingredients
Stir-fried Turnip
- 3-4 small turnips
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 2 tbsp. butter
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp. Orange water
Burned Turnip
- 450 gr. turnip slices
- 3 tbsp. olive oil, separated
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp. minced garlic

Baked Turnips
- 700 gr. turnip
- 1 tbsp. unsalted butter
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
Step
Method 1 of 5: Set up Turnip
Step 1. Choose fresh turnips
A fresh turnip is indicated by a dense skin, firm to the touch, and has a lush green stalk on top. Avoid turnips with brown spots or green stalks that look unhealthy, as these will indicate that the turnips are old. The older your turnips are, the more bitter they will taste.
Step 2. Use a sharp knife to cut off the green stalks
Step 3. Rinse the turnips with cold water
This will remove any bacteria or dirt.
Step 4. Peel the turnips
Use a sharp knife to peel away the tough turnip skin. If the turnips are peeling or the skin is cracked, then you'll need to peel off the outer layer to get a newer, fresher surface underneath. This is similar to the method for peeling onions.
Method 2 of 5: Saute Turnip
Step 1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat
Wait 30 seconds or so for the butter to heat up.
Step 2. Sauté 1 cup chopped onion in a frying pan
Step 3. Cut 3-4 turnips into thin slices
Cut into thin slices that resemble french fries.
Step 4. Add the turnips to the skillet when the onion starts to soften
Add another tablespoon of olive oil to the skillet.
Step 5. Cook the turnips for 5 minutes then reduce the heat to low heat
Continue cooking the turnips until soft. Then, remove the turnips from the stove and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 6. Serve
Sprinkle the turnips with 1 tbsp. lemon juice, toss the pan to mix the lemon juice and vegetables, and serve while still hot.
Method 3 of 5: Turnip Burn
Step 1. Light the burner
Step 2. Cut 1 450g turnip into quarters
When you're done, pierce the turnips with a toothpick to make the baking process easier.
Step 3. Coat the turnips on both sides with 1 tbsp
olive oil.
Step 4. Season the turnips with salt and pepper to taste
Step 5. Bake the turnips over moderately high heat until soft
Takes about two minutes to burn each side of the turnip. When done, transfer to a plate.
Step 6. Cook 1 tablespoon of garlic and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a frying pan over high heat
Wait 1-2 minutes for the oil to sizzle.
Step 7. Lower the stove heat to low heat
Cook the garlic for about 2 more minutes or until golden.
Step 8. Turn off the heat and mix 2 tablespoons of chopped parsley with 1 tsp
pepper. Mix the two ingredients until completely combined.
Step 9. Spoon the oil mixture and apply it on the turnips
Step 10. Serve
Sprinkle the turnips with the zest of 1 lemon and enjoy while still hot.
Method 4 of 5: Baking Turnips
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 260ºC
Put the track in the middle position.
Step 2. Peel and divide the 700g turnips into quarters
The pieces should resemble lemon wedges.
Step 3. Melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in a small skillet
Step 4. Put the turnips with melted butter in a small bowl
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 5. Place the turnips into the roasting pan
Make sure there is space between each turnip piece.
Step 6. Bake the turnips for 25-30 minutes, until soft and brown
During this process, you'll need to toss and shake the pan once or twice to ensure that the turnips bake evenly.
Step 7. Serve
Enjoy these delicious baked turnips while they are still hot.
Method 5 of 5: Cooking Turnips in Another Way
Step 1. Replace half of the potatoes in your favorite potato recipe with turnips
Prepare the turnips the same way you would cook potatoes. The result will be a soft and surprisingly delicious dish.
Step 2. Slice the turnips and serve raw
These slices can then be eaten alone with a pinch of salt, or you can use them on hamburgers or other dishes as a substitute for raw onions.
Step 3. Grate the raw turnips
Use a cheese grater to grate the turnips. Place the turnips on top of your favorite salad. The turnip will add a crunchy texture and delicious taste.
Step 4. Chop the turnips and add to the soup
Then mix it into your favorite soup before you cook it, just as you would celery or sliced onions. The turnips will simmer in the broth and add to the rich flavor.
Step 5. Boil the turnips
Cut the turnips into thick slices, and boil in the steamer for 3 to 5 minutes. Place the turnips on a baking sheet, and place them in the oven at 54ºC for about 8 to 10 hours. Once the turnips feel dry or brittle to the touch, take them out and let them cool. Serve these drained turnips as a snack, or add them to soups as you would a soup with crackers.
Step 6.
