Does the thought of making a ghost costume make you shiver with fear? Don't be afraid to make your own costume. All you need are simple objects, and the help of a friend. If you follow these easy steps, you'll be wearing your latest ghost costume in no time.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Making a Traditional Ghost Costume
Step 1. Cut the brim of a light-colored baseball cap
If you don't want to damage the hat, wear it upside down. Or, just buy a cheap one from a thrift store.
The color of the hat should be as bright as possible, or people will be able to see it through the sheet which will cover your head
Step 2. Put a sheet over the head of the person who will be wearing the ghost costume
If it's too long and drags on the floor, mark the point where it needs to be cut.
The costume can be dragged slightly to create a floating effect, but not so long that the person wearing it will fall
Step 3. Mark the position of the person's head on the sheet with a black marker
Step 4. Mark the eye holes
Ask someone from inside the cloth to mark with their finger where their eyes are, and make small dots on the cloth in this area.
Step 5. Remove it from the sheet and pin it to the baseball cap (with safety pins for example)
Place the marked head position on the fabric right in the center of the baseball cap.
- Also pin a piece of cloth around the hat. You will need to use about three or four safety pins.
- If you don't want the black dot on the head to be so visible, you can flip the sheet over. You can still see where the marker is but it will be invisible to others who are looking.
- You can also mask the tag with an x-tip. Or, use a fabric pencil that can fade later.
Step 6. Make eye holes
Make eye holes in the marked positions. Circle it with a black marker. These eye holes must be at least twice the size of the wearer's actual eye.
Step 7. Draw the mouth and nose
Use a marker to draw the nose and mouth. You can make holes for your nose or mouth to make it easier for you to breathe.
Step 8. If the fabric is too long, cut it
Once you've marked the point where the fabric will be cut, cut it along that line.
Method 2 of 2: Making More Complex Ghost Costumes
Step 1. Place a sheet of cloth over the head of the person wearing this costume
Step 2. Draw a circle onto the fabric around the wearer's neck
Step 3. Mark the area above the person's elbow
Step 4. Also mark the area under the person's ankles
Step 5. Open the cloth
Step 6. Cut a circle around the circle area you marked for the head
You can make it slightly larger when you cut it to ensure that the person's head can fit through the hole.
Step 7. Cut a hole for the arm at the mark you made above the person's elbow
Step 8. Cut along the ankle line
Cut it into jagged edges for a ragged effect.
Step 9. Take the remaining pieces of fabric and stick them all over the costume in a jagged way too, forming a triangle
Do this with fabric glue. This will create a more spooky effect.
Step 10. Tell the person wearing this costume to also wear a white long-sleeved shirt
You can glue random triangular pieces of fabric to the person's shirt so it hangs down like ice.
Step 11. Have the person put on the costume again
This person should be able to easily fit his head through the headhole and his arm should fit through the armhole.
Step 12. Apply all-white makeup all over the person's face
Cover the entire face, including the eyebrows and lips.
You can also put this makeup on her neck because this part will show
Step 13. Draw gray circles on the person's eyelids and under his eyes
You can also paint the lips, or leave them covered in white makeup earlier.
Step 14. Sprinkle flour on the person's hair
This will create a dusty effect.
Tips
- Coloring your nails black or white will add to the "ghost" look.
- Kids can be fussy wearing ghost costumes. If your child really wants to be a ghost, the method of punching holes in the fabric and painting the face will likely work well.
- Try to wear light colored shoes with this costume for a more convincing look.
- The method of using bed linen to make ghost costumes is classic and well known, but keep in mind that it can make socializing a little difficult. If you're playing trick-or-treating, this costume is fine, but if you're going to a costume party, the cloth-draped face painting method is the best choice.
