No matter what type of key fob you have, you can replace the battery in a matter of minutes. The technique for opening the key fob and battery is somewhat different depending on the type you have. Pry the key fob open, then replace the old battery with a new one. Your key fob will now work as before.

Part 1 of 2: Unlocking the Key Fob
Step 1. Move the key if it is inside the key fob
This step depends on the type of key fob you have. Car key fobs usually hold the key when not in use. You have to unlock it, although on some key fobs it can be released. Either slide the key or bend it until the key fob comes out.
- Key fobs with slidable keys usually have a small button at the top. Hold down the button while pulling the lock out.
- For a key fob with a spring lock, press the spring button on the key fob or pull the key forward until it pops out.
Step 2. Unscrew the back of the key fob
Flip the key fob and look for at least 1 screw that secures the plastic. These screws are small enough that you will need a plus screwdriver that is also small. Turn the screwdriver counterclockwise to unscrew the screw. Work slowly so as not to scrape the screws.
Store the screws in a safe place, such as a sealable bag or bowl so they don't get lost
Step 3. Twist the coin in the side slot, if the key fob has one
Many, but not all key fobs have a small recess on the side. Use a small coin or a flat-head screwdriver. Push the tip of a coin or screwdriver into the slit, then twist it to separate the key fob in half.
Step 4. Remove the key fob cover if it has no gaps
The key fob has a joint around the sides. This is where the two halves of the key fob meet. Push the flat head of the screwdriver into this joint to separate the key fob in half. Then, lift the screwdriver to pry open the plastic casing.
The jammed case is easier to remove if you use a screwdriver on all sides of the key fob. Push the flat blade into the key fob joint at different points until you can separate the case in two
Part 2 of 2: Replacing the Battery
Step 1. Disassemble the battery with a screwdriver
The battery looks like a small silver coin in the center of the key fob. Try removing the battery by sliding it with your finger. If this is difficult, remove the battery using the tip of a flat screwdriver or paper clip. Slide the screwdriver head into the bottom of the battery and lift it gently to remove the battery.
Some key fobs have a clip above the battery. Lift the clip with a screwdriver to free the battery. Work slowly, and lift the clip as gently as possible without breaking it
Step 2. Insert the new battery into place
Insert the new battery into the gap left by the old battery. Refer to the diagram on the plastic key fob to see how to install the battery. Usually, the battery is installed with the positive pole side facing up. You don't have to do anything else to close the battery; if it fits right in the gap, the battery is firmly attached.
- Key fobs usually use a small coin-like battery such as the CR2025 or CR2032. You can usually find it at a hardware store, watch store, or repair shop.
- To find the specific type of battery you are using, consult the key fob user manual.
Step 3. Put the plastic case back together
Replace the plastic key fob cover. Push it so that the two halves of the case come together again. After that, tighten it by reinstalling the screws. Turn the screw clockwise until the two halves of the key fob are firmly seated.
Step 4. Test the key fob
Point the key fob at the car or other related device. The key fob should work right away. Otherwise, your battery may be upside down. You will need to disassemble the key fob again to test it. If it doesn't work, it's possible that your key fob is damaged.
