Diced sugar is very easy to make at home. The only ingredients you need are sugar and water. In addition to the usual dice shapes, you can also add colors and flavors to add a different kind of fun to your tea party or other event. Learn how to make cubed sugar in two different ways: baked on a tray in the oven or made in an ice cube mold and left overnight.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Making Diced Sugar by Baking
Step 1. Pour 200 grams of granulated sugar into a bowl
You can use any sugar except powdered sugar. Choose between brown sugar or regular granulated sugar.
Step 2. Pour three teaspoons of water into a bowl of sugar
Pour evenly and let stand for a few seconds.
Step 3. Stir the water and sugar with a fork
Remove lumps of sugar and make a smooth mixture. If lumps of sugar are still there, stir constantly. If the sugar is gently pressed and returns to its original shape, then the sugar is ready to use.
Step 4. Line the parchment paper on the baking sheet
You can use a baking sheet for baking bread or any pan made of glass or metal that is oven-safe.
Step 5. Pour the sugar onto the baking sheet
Press the sugar into the bottom of the pan with a spatula or other stiff, flat tool. The height should be the same as the sugar cubes on the market, which is about 1.27 cm.
- If you want a shape other than cubes, pour the sugar into an oven-safe candy mold or muffin tin.
- If you have a candy mold that doesn't work for baking, you can still use it. Pour the sugar into the molds and use a spatula to smooth the tops. Don't put the mold in the oven, instead, cover the mold with parchment paper and let it sit on the counter overnight. The next morning, the sugar had hardened.
Step 6. Cut the sugar
Cut the sugar slabs into your desired size using a knife. Cut into neat and even cubes. Do not neglect this step, if it is not neat and even, then the result is block sugar, not cubed sugar.
Step 7. Place the pan in the preheated oven at 120°C
Set the oven timer for 1 hour.
Step 8. Remove the sugar pan from the oven
After an hour, remove the pan and let the sugar cool for 10 minutes.
Step 9. Break the sugar cubes
Remove the cubed sugar from the pan and break it off with your hands or something strong like a knife. If cut properly, the sugar will break easily.
Step 10. Save the diced sugar
Put the powdered sugar in an airtight container for future use. Or, put it in coffee or tea right away and enjoy.
Method 2 of 2: Using molds of various shapes
Step 1. Prepare the silicone ice cube mold
This method works best if you choose a silicone ice cube mold with cute shapes like hearts, stars, animals, or something other than the usual dice shapes. Silicone molds are great molds because you can more easily remove the cubed sugar without damaging it.
Step 2. Pour the sugar into a bowl
You can make diced sugar with as much as 100 grams of granulated sugar, this amount is quite good for beginners. However, you can also make more than that amount.
Step 3. Add a teaspoon of water to the bowl of sugar and mix
Continue to add a teaspoon of water until it is combined and a paste of sugar and water is formed. Don't get too sticky or wet, as the sugar will dissolve.
- At this point, you can mix in a few drops of food coloring to make diced sugar.
- Consider adding a few drops of vanilla, almond, or lemon extract to make powdered sugar with flavor.
Step 4. Put the sugar paste into the mold with a spoon
Fill each part of the mold half full.
Step 5. Solidify the sugar
Press the sugar into the mold with the back of a spoon so that the surface is even and the sugar solidifies.
Step 6. Dry the sugar
Place the mold in a dry place to allow the water to evaporate. If your kitchen is damp, the powdered sugar won't harden.
Step 7. Remove the pieces of sugar
Remove each piece of sugar by carefully prying it out of the bottom of the mold and tapping it gently against the palm of your hand. Store in an airtight container or use immediately.
