Measuring a jacket will give you the size figures you need when buying or forging clothes
To get your jacket size, you'll need to measure several parts of your body: chest, waist, shoulders, arms and back. Once you know the size, you can compare it to the brand's sizing guide and choose a jacket that fits you perfectly.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Measuring Body
Step 1. Take off all heavy clothing
Thick clothing, such as sweaters or jeans, can confuse measurements because you need to measure as close to your body as possible.
Step 2. Measure your chest or bust
Ask friends for help! This part is difficult to do alone. Raise both arms, and ask a friend to wrap a measuring tape under your armpits. Lower until the tape measure is at the widest part of the chest. For women, wrap the tape measure around your bust, or the fullest part of your chest.
- Go 2.5 cm more than your chest size if you want a more casual jacket. Casual jacket sizes tend to be looser.
- Make sure the tape measure is always held evenly when used to measure.
- Clothing manufacturers will usually increase the bust size by 10 cm compared to their estimates. This is the reason the chest size is not the same as the jacket size.
Step 3. Find your natural waist width
Determine the location of the natural crease of the waist by bending to one side. This crease will be higher than where your pants usually rest at the waist; usually above the navel, just below the ribs. Keep the tape measure parallel to the floor and measure the circumference of the torso at this crease.
If the jacket has buttons, it should fit neatly above the natural waist without feeling tight or restrictive. This is why you should get a waist measurement
Step 4. Measure shoulder width
Stand in a natural, relaxed posture. Spread the tape measure horizontally along the back of your shoulders, and measure your shoulder width.
- This size is important because your jacket will have to stretch flat, and not bulge or sag at the upper biceps, especially for a suit or formal suit.
- If the jacket's shoulder size doesn't fit your body, you will see wrinkles or creases on the sleeves and top of the jacket.
Step 5. Find the sleeve length
Place one hand on your waist so that your arm is bent. Have your friend start at the bone at the base of the neck, and extend the tape measure all the way to the wrist. This is the right jacket sleeve length for you.
This size is very important because if the sleeves of the jacket are too long or too short, the whole jacket can seem too small or too big to you
Step 6. Find the circumference of the pelvis
Start with the tape measure on one hip, loop it around the other hip, then connect it back to the starting end of the tape measure. You need to measure at the widest part of the pelvis, around the buttocks. You'll have a hard time keeping the tape measure flat if you do it yourself, so ask a friend to help you get an accurate result.
For men, a well-fitting formal jacket should pass through the hips and fall exactly at the widest part of the hips so this size will be very useful
Step 7. Start at the top of the shoulder and measure down to determine your ideal length
Place the measuring tape over the top of the shoulder and extend it toward the front of the chest. Stop measuring where you want the bottom hem of the jacket to be.
- Jackets vary in length based on their height and style. For a standard blazer jacket or coat, the rule of thumb is to measure up to the top of the thigh.
- The way for women can be different; Many women like the look of a cropped jacket because it makes the legs look longer.
Step 8. Find the size chart for the purchased brand
Many brands provide size charts on their websites, which list the exact sizes of their garments. Match the measurement results to the right size, and chest size is the most important size.
- Many sites also list sizes in the description of the product you're viewing.
- However, different countries may have different measurement systems for jackets so don't rely too much on the general jacket size chart. We recommend that you compare your size with the size of the brand product that you want to buy.
Method 2 of 2: Measuring a Jacket That Already Fits You
Step 1. Choose your jacket that is the right size and the same type you want to buy
If you want a more formal jacket, take a formal jacket that you already have. If you're looking for a more casual sports jacket, look for one that fits your body.
If you don't have a jacket of a similar type, ask a friend or relative who is your size if he or she has a jacket of the same type you're looking for, and if you can try it on to determine if it fits
Step 2. Spread the jacket, face up, on a flat surface
Attach buttons and zippers, and make sure the sleeves are not bent. To obtain an accurate measurement, the fabric should be laid as flat as possible.
Step 3. Measure the chest width and multiply by 2
Connect the lowest point of the armpit seam using a measuring tape. Multiply that number by two to get the circumference of your chest.
Step 4. Find the length of the jacket
Starting at the base of the collar, measure straight down towards the end of the bottom hem of the jacket. If you like the length of this jacket, use it to find a jacket of a similar length. Again, it all depends on your personal style and taste; the perfect jacket length is what you want.
Step 5. Turn the jacket over and measure the sleeve length
Place one end of the tape measure into the center of the back of the jacket, just below the collar. Then, run the ribbon along the sleeves of the jacket all the way to the cuffs.
Step 6. Measure shoulder width
While the coat is still upside down, flatten the shoulders and measure the distance between the hems of the shoulders. Don't let your shoulders look too narrow or loose.
Step 7. Match your measurement results to the product size chart
Find the size of the jacket you want to buy, and compare it to the size you've got to determine which one is right for you. Different brands define different sizes so it's a good idea to use a sizing chart for the brand of jacket you want to buy.
Tips
- If you buy a jacket that doesn't fit properly, hire a tailor to adjust it! Give all the measurements above that you get to the tailor to help him adjust the jacket so that it fits your body.
- Tailors will also usually measure your body, if previously you could not get help from someone else to measure your body.
- Re-measure your body every few months to ensure accuracy, especially if your body has undergone drastic changes.
- If you're trying on a jacket at the store, be sure to wear what you normally wear underneath.
