Pegboard is a hard board - high density fiberboard - which is equipped with many holes (small in size and arranged regularly in the form of a grid). Pegboards are often used as an organized grid of lattices to hold tools and other equipment. The pegboard has very specific properties, especially tough/rigid, hard and strong. Installing the walls of your garage or home with dowels is an amazing inexpensive project, although it requires detailed measurements, checking for evenness as well as support for the walls.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Buying the Materials You Need
Step 1. Measure the area of the wall where you will attach the dowels
It's a good idea to know the length and width of the area before you head to a home improvement store.
Step 2. Purchase a piece of pegboard
Stakeboards are often sold in several sizes, such as 60.96 × 121.92 meters; 121, 92 × 121, 92 meters; and 121, 92 × 243, 84 meters. If you want the exact size, buy a larger pegboard and ask the store to cut it to your intended size.
- Most major stores will do the deductions for free or for a nominal fee.
- You can also install several parts of the pegboard on the entire surface of the tile wall.
Step 3. Purchase a furring strip to use as a frame
Cut the wooden slats according to the width of the pegboard that you will install.
Making the frame allows you to leave some space between the wall and the pegboard for attaching hangers. The frame will also cushion the pegs and prevent damage to your walls
Step 4. Find the paint color you want to apply to the pegboard
The pegboards are sold in white or brown and can be left unpainted, if you prefer. To make pegboard camouflage in a craft room or kitchen, you can coat it with paint that matches the color of the walls of those spaces.
You can also use spray paint to create a contrasting pegboard installation
Step 5. Paint the pegboard a few days in advance, in the garage or outdoors
Painting beforehand will reduce the smell of paint. The process includes letting the paint sit for a while before you hang anything.
Part 2 of 3: Hanging the Pegboard
Step 1. Use a stud finder to mark the presence of posts on your wall
If you can't find a post while you will hang the pegs on the drywall, install wall anchors every 40.64 cm so that the pegs are sufficiently supported.
Drilling into posts is preferable, as dowelboards are often used to hang heavy utensils or pots and pans in kitchens
Step 2. Ask a friend to help install the wooden slats for the frame
Hold it in a horizontal position across the wall surface and install a level seal (waterpass) on it. Adjust until the wall surface is perfectly flat, then ask your friend to hold the wooden slats in place while you drill screws through the frame from the slats and into the posts or wall anchors.
- For a small peg board, two horizontal slats should suffice. While for larger installations, use three or four wooden slats.
- Drill guide holes in the slats before you attach them to the wall and after you check for evenness, so that you can fit the slats to the wall anchors.
Step 3. Lift the pegboard up to cover the frame made of the wooden slats
Make sure the pegboard is level, then prepare to hang it with the help of a friend.
Step 4. Screw the pegboard to the frame using 1.9 cm (3/4 inch) screws and bolts
Screw the dowels at regular intervals, for example in horizontal rows 15.24 cm apart. Repeat the above steps on the remaining frame to ensure that the dowels are firmly attached to the wall.
Part 3 of 3: Using the Stakeboard
Step 1. Purchase a set of pegboard kits/equipment
Make sure the device matches the size of the hole in the pegboard you purchased. The peg boards are available with hole sizes of 0.6 cm and 0.3 cm.
Step 2. Arrange the hangers on a large table
Experiment with a configuration by placing utensils, craft supplies or kitchen utensils not far from the hanger.
Step 3. To ensure proper layout, attach the hangers from the arrangement on the table to the pegboard
Step 4. Add extra screws and cover rings/washers if the pegboard moves/shifts extensively when you attach the hanger
Tips
- Pegboard hangers are usually available as a set for around IDR 12,000, 00 (dollar exchange rate of IDR 12,000, 00). Meanwhile, a set that contains a peg board and many variations of hanging fixtures can cost more than Rp. 120,000, 00 (dollar exchange rate of Rp. 12,000, 00). Installing the pegboards by purchasing the planks and hangers separately will likely cost less than buying them as a set.
- You can also attach small nails to the pegboard to make a hanger. Measure the width of the tool and attach the nail to the other side of the handle (of the tool). Slide the tool between the two nails.
