The Jack Russell Terrier is a strong and sturdy dog breed that can sometimes be aggressive if not trained properly. Like all terriers, the Jack Russell has a lot of energy and requires a lot of exercise to burn off that energy. Otherwise, the Jack Russell Terrier will find a way to entertain himself, which is usually not what you want because you consider this to be naughty behavior. The most important thing you can do to keep your Jack Russell Terrier happy is to love him and give him some limits in his training. This breed of dog is very loyal to its owner. With the right training and lots of exercise, you and your Jack Russell Terrier can live happily together.

Part 1 of 2: Training a Jack Russell Terrier
Step 1. Train your Jack Russell from an early age
The training started from the first day, which was in the form of toilet training and cage training to teach him that his cage was a safe place. Puppies learn quickly, so take this time to teach your dog simple commands. Complex types of training can be taught later when the dog is 8 weeks old, but you need to make the sessions shorter. Make the session length a few minutes longer as the puppy grows a few weeks old. Space between sessions until the frequency is 2 or 3 times a day. It's important to teach him simple things, like “sit”, “down”, “stand still”, and “stand up”, but the Jack Russell Terrier should be trained more in obedience.

Step 2. Put your dog in a dog obedience school

Step 3. Train your Jack Russell Terrier puppy at home
If you have a Jack Russell Terrier puppy, you will need to train him at home. Start by choosing a small room in your home to be your puppy's room when you're not home. Lay the newspaper all over the floor the puppy will use. Clean the floor by removing the newspaper every day, until you notice that your puppy has a certain position he likes in the room. Next, you can gradually remove newspapers from areas that are not being used by the puppy.
Once the puppy is used to only using certain areas of the newspaper, you can move the laying of the newspaper to another area of your house, which will serve as a place to urinate for the puppy
Step 4. Train your adult Jack Russell Terrier
If your dog starts having problems and is urinating inappropriately in your home or outside, retrain your dog. Take the dog out every three hours and after the dog has eaten or taken a nap. Remind your dog of his bowel schedule. If your dog is pooping when you take him out, give him a compliment, such as "smart dog." If the dog doesn't, just bring the dog back in, wait 15 minutes, then take the dog back outside and try again.
Take your dog to the same place every time you take him outside. This way, your dog will associate the location with his toilet
Step 5. Watch for signs of restlessness in your dog when you leave him
Your dog may feel restless when you leave him alone all day. You may notice that your dog is scratching, vomiting, urinating, pacing, or becoming aggressive (usually when you are not around). Signs of anxiety occur because the dog is separated from you, which means your dog is dependent on and longing for you, not misbehaving.
To treat your dog's anxiety from being separated, don't give your dog any attention right before you leave the house. Instead, ignore him for 15-20 minutes before you leave and 20 minutes after you return. This will ease his excitement
Step 6. Stop your dog from chasing a cat or other small animal
Chasing other animals can cause accidents or injury to both the Jack Russell Terrier and the animal being chased. To prevent this, make sure that your dog immediately sits and calms down when you tell him to. Plus, you can ease their sensitivity to cats and other small animals.

- This exercise may take several sessions (remember to keep sessions short) over several days, but eventually your dog will learn that cats are not objects to chase.
Step 8. Reward your Jack Russell
Offer a small snack, such as a piece of chicken or a small piece of cheese, to appreciate your puppy's behavior in obeying your commands. If you have just taught a new commandment, reward it when you see progress in its observance. Give verbal appreciation and praise, such as saying, “Smart dog”, or “yes!”, or petting him during training sessions.
Don't try to train a puppy that is hungry, tired, or overly energetic. Wait for the puppy to relax but still respond to you
Part 2 of 2: Invite the Jack Russell Terrier to Socialize and Interact
Step 1. Understand why socialization works for the Jack Russell Terrier
Socialization is the process of introducing a puppy to new situations in order to learn to interact properly. Introducing your puppy to new situations and having people around him teach him the right things (e.g. other friendly dogs, cats, and people around) is nothing to be afraid of. Fearful dogs can become "aggressive," biting and barking when they can't escape the situation.
Running away from things you don't need to fear can be dangerous. Dogs can run into traffic and be hit by a vehicle, or run away from home and get lost
Step 2. Invite the Jack Russell Terrier to socialize
Once your dog is vaccinated, you can take him to the park, go for a walk in a crowded area, where there are lots of other dogs, or enroll him in obedience school. If there are no obedience classes in your area or if you have to wait for a new class to start, you can start teaching the other commandments and simple socializing yourself. You can also take them to crowded areas so your dog can see new people and things.
- You should try to expose the dog to as many different things as possible. For example, take him for a drive and pause in a few places so the dog can check his surroundings. Or, invite friends and their pets to your home to get to know your dog. Let your dog interact with other people and animals.
- Don't force or pressure your dog to socialize. If your dog is afraid to be around other animals he doesn't know, don't tell him to interact all the time. Instead, just take it slowly and at a pace that is comfortable for him.
Step 3. Do not pick up/carry your dog in the presence of other dogs in the vicinity
If you pick it up, the Jack Russell Terrier will become nervous and aggressive towards other dogs. Instead, try to stay on the leash and position your dog by your side when another dog approaches. If a stray or other aggressive dog approaches, pull your Jack Russell Terrier and leave the area.
On the other hand, the Jack Russell Terrier can become more aggressive towards other dogs, even towards fellow Jack Russell Terriers
Step 4. Watch your Jack Russel Terrier around other dogs
Since the Jack Russell Terrier is a hunting dog, it is natural to be aggressive. Don't leave your dog in close proximity to other dogs unsupervised, even a fellow Jack Russell Terrier. Therefore, you should never allow small children, small animals or pets, or cats to be near the Jack Russell Terrier unsupervised.
To reduce your dog's aggressive nature, encourage him to keep exercising and being active. A bored Jack Russell Terrier can be aggressive or destructive
Step 5. Teach your dog about his position in the family
Since the Jack Russell Terrier may think of himself as the top dog, let the dog know that you are the master. For example, once the dog understands the command “sit,” teach the Jack Russell Terrier to sit across from you before eating its food. Every now and then, pick up the bowl while the dog is eating, to make sure the dog knows you're the top spot.
Be firm and consistent with your dog. Don't let your dog behave as he pleases
Step 6. Take your Jack Russell Terrier for a walk at least twice a day
You can take it for long walks or play an active game. The Jack Russell Terrier is very smart and will tire you out if you don't find an outlet to expend all of its energy. Playing an active game like throw-and-cat will help you burn off any excess energy. Terriers love this game.
The Jack Russell Terrier likes it when you run after him for a toy he's mastering. However, don't make this a habit, so your dog doesn't get used to ignoring you when you call out to him. Instead, teach him the “put” command. This way, you keep the lead in the game
Step 7. Buy chew-resistant toys
This will help you burn off your Jack Russell energy. Kong is a great breed of dog toy because it doesn't tear easily. You can fill it with peanut butter and other treats to keep the Jack Russell Terrier busy trying to eat the filling.
In general, a toy filled with food is not an ideal choice for a terrier, although this dog may really like it. Your Jack Russell Terrier may tear it apart and try to eat it into pieces, leaving your home dirty and messy
Step 8. Provide nutritious food for your Jack Russell Terrier
Choose a high-quality dog food that does not contain mixed grains or preservatives. Instead, look for dog food that has meat, such as lamb or chicken, as its main ingredient. Because dog food products vary widely, follow the specific instructions on the package. You may also need to adjust the portion of food you give your Jack Russell Terrier based on his age, activity level and body size.
As a general guideline, a Jack Russell Terrier measuring approximately 31 cm should weigh approximately 5.5-6 kg
Tips
- If you have small pets, such as guinea pigs, keep them away from your Jack Russell Terrier.
- If you walk your dog, try to keep the dog walking beside you or slightly ahead of you. It is important not to let it tug at you. A soft leather leash or leash is great for dampening your dog's ability to tug on you.
- Train your Jack Russell Terrier to "go up" as you lift him up. That way, if you need to pick up your dog in an emergency, the dog will happily jump into your arms.
