Method 1 of 2: Assembling the Boat
Step 1. Gather the ingredients
You'll need five Wood Planks of any type, and they don't have to be the same type of tree. one Wood block will make four Wood Planks. Wood blocks can be obtained by cutting down trees, found in some NPC villages, and occasionally found in mineshafts.
Step 2. Arrange the Wood Plank in the Crafting grid
Arrange the Wood Plank as follows:
- Place the three Wood Planks at the bottom of the three slots of the Crafting grid.
- Place a Wood Plank a slot above the bottom-left of the Plank.
- Place the last Wood Plank one slot above the bottom-right of the Plank.
- All other slots must remain empty.
Step 3. Assemble the boat
You can add a boat directly to your inventory by dragging it into one of the lower slots or by holding Shift and clicking it.
Method 2 of 2: Putting the boat on the water
Step 1. Put the boat on the water
Find a quiet spot on the water, select a boat from the inventory, then right-click on the water. The boat will be placed on the water. If the boat is put on the current; the boat will begin to go with the current.
- A boat can also be placed on land by right-clicking. The boat can be controlled on land but its movement will be very slow.
- The boat can be placed on lava, but it will break when you try to board.
Step 2. Get on the boat
Right click the boat to get on. You can do it from any direction, including beneath it after a dive. Press the left Shift key to exit the boat.
Step 3. Navigate the boat
The boat will go in the direction of the cursor you are pointing at when you hold down the W key. Pressing S Back will quickly change the direction of the boat to the opposite direction.
- Boats are very fragile, and can break easily if hit. The boat that is destroyed on impact will drop three Wood Planks and two Sticks. A boat that is destroyed by an attack will bring down the boat.
- You can Sprint while using the boat to move a little faster.
Tips
- If you push the boat on the snow, the snow will melt.
- The speed effect can make the boat move faster.
- The boat moves in the direction of the current or with the control of the player.
- As entities, boats behave like minecarts going off course. However the boat acts like a solid block, meaning it can be placed on top of players, mobs and other boats. Players, mobs and other entities can also stand on the boat.
- These steps work for both PC and console versions of Minecraft. Boats are not available in Minecraft Pocket Edition.
- You can use the door to block the boat from moving with the current. This is important if you are building a pier or canal.
