While fireplaces don't have a specific function in Minecraft, having them can add an interesting touch to your home. Follow this guide to learn how to build a brick fireplace with a chimney in Minecraft.

Method 1 of 2: Making Blocks of Bricks for the Fireplace
Step 1. Mine the clay blocks
You can get clay blocks from shallow water, and you have to mine them with a shovel.
- You can break clay blocks directly by hand, but a shovel will work better.
- Regardless of Fortune, the clay block will always split into 4 clay balls.
Step 2. Break the clay block into four clay balls
Add clay balls and a fuel source, such as coal, to the furnace to smelt the bricks.
Make sure to melt the clay balls, not the blocks. Melting clay blocks will produce hard clay/terracotta that cannot be turned back into ordinary clay
Step 3. Make bricks
Bricks must be shaped into blocks before they can be used to make buildings. To do so, place 4 bricks onto a 2x2 square in the craft menu.

Step 4. Buy and sell with villager
Alternatively, you can also sell emeralds to Stone Mason villagers to get bricks instead of having to collect clay yourself.
- Stone masons houses usually appear as part of the village. However, you can also turn inactive villagers into stone masons by placing a stonecutter near them.
- This technique is recommended for large projects as it doesn't take as much time as looking for clay.
- For smaller projects, you shouldn't have to trade with too many villagers. However, for larger buildings, it's a good idea to prepare a buying and selling hall.
Method 2 of 2: Making a Brick Fireplace with a Chimney
Step 1. Make a hole of 2 x 4 bricks up to the ceiling in the outer wall of your house
Step 2. Make a hole the size of 2 bricks in the floor, right in the middle of the hole you just made
Step 3. Surround the hole with brick blocks
Place netherracks in the holes in the floor and fence the entire fireplace 1 block deep.

If you want a fireplace that also serves as an escape route make a 1x2x3 or 2x2x2 fireplace (these dimensions are: height x width x length/back) with a passage leading to someplace safe (to be really safe add a sword or bow and arrows) and a mine cart behind the place where the fire will be located (the train will still work even if the fire is… blazing, but just in case add 7 blocks of water).

Step 4. Build the chimney as high as you want on the outside of your house
Step 5. Light the netherrack with flint and steel to complete your fireplace
Tips
- Add a metal grate in front of the fireplace to prevent the fire from spreading.
- Netherrack will fire until you (the player) extinguish it.
- If you're really worried that your log house will catch fire, convert your planks to half-timber boards. You won't lose any material because three planks of wood equal six and a half planks of wood. You just need more time to place them.
- If you don't have a netherrack, you can mine it in the Nether using a rock pickaxe.
- If you don't have a nether or netherrack portal, use wood.
