This wikiHow teaches you how to update your version of Minecraft. While Minecraft usually updates automatically regardless of the platform you're playing it on, sometimes you can force download a "pending" update by manually updating it. Keep in mind that your device or platform must be connected to the internet in order for you to download Minecraft updates.
Step
Method 1 of 6: On a Desktop Computer
Step 1. Open the Minecraft launcher
Click or double-click the Minecraft app icon, which looks like a patch of grass.
If you're using the Windows 10 edition of Minecraft, you can't update manually
Step 2. Sign in to your account if necessary
If prompted, enter the account email address and password, then press the “ LOG IN ”.
Step 3. Look for the "Download" marker on the PLAY button
If you see the text “Download” followed by the version number under the green button labeled “ PLAY ” at the bottom of the program window, an update is already available for the version of Minecraft you are using.
If you don't see the " Download " marker even though you know an update is available, skip the next two steps
Step 4. Click the PLAY button
It's a green button at the bottom of the launcher window. After that, the update will be downloaded immediately.
Step 5. Wait for the update to finish downloading
Once the green progress bar appears at the bottom of the launcher window, you can start playing Minecraft.
Step 6. Re-download Minecraft if necessary
If Minecraft can't download the update even though it's available, you can get the update by re-downloading the latest version of the Minecraft installation file. To do this, first delete Minecraft from your computer, then follow these steps:
- Visit https://minecraft.net/en-us/profile/ and log into your account if necessary.
- Click the button " DOWNLOAD ” in the top left corner of the page.
- Click the button " DOWNLOAD ” in green in the middle of the page.
Step 7. Upgrade the program to the Windows 10 edition of Minecraft
If you have a Windows 10 computer and are using the Java edition of Minecraft, you can upgrade to the Windows 10 edition for free by following these steps:
- Visit https://account.mojang.com/me and sign in with your Minecraft account if prompted.
- Click the button " Redeem ” under the "Minecraft for Windows 10" heading.
- Sign in to your Microsoft account if prompted.
- Click the button " Next ” on the "Redeem" page.
- Click the button " Confirm ”.

Open the Microsoft Store from the menu “ Start ”
on the computer.
- Search for "Minecraft", then click " Install ” on the Minecraft page.
Method 2 of 6: On iPhone
Step 1. Open the app
App Store on iPhone.
Tap the App Store icon, which looks like a white “A” on a light blue background.
Step 2. Touch the Updates option
It's in the lower-right corner of the screen. A list of applications that need updating will be displayed.
Step 3. Search for Minecraft
Swipe (if necessary) to find the "Minecraft" app icon and title.
If you don't see Minecraft in the list, the update is not yet available. If Minecraft isn't running with the latest version, it could be because your iPhone doesn't support the latest update, or the latest update isn't yet available in your area
Step 4. Touch the UPDATE button
It's to the right of the Minecraft title. After that, the app will update immediately.
Step 5. Wait for the update to finish downloading
After seeing the button OPEN ” next to the Minecraft title, you can play an updated version of Minecraft.
Method 3 of 6: On Android Device
Step 1. Open
Play Store on Android devices.
Tap the Play Store app icon, which looks like a colorful triangle on a white background.
Step 2. Touch the button
It's in the top-left corner of the screen. After that, a pop-out menu will appear on the left side of the screen.
Step 3. Touch My apps & games
It's at the top of the pop-out menu.
Step 4. Touch the UPDATES tab
It's in the top-left corner of the "My apps & games" page.
Step 5. Search for Minecraft
Swipe (if necessary) until you find the title and app icon "Minecraft".
If you don't see Minecraft, an app update is not yet available. If Minecraft is unable to update or receive updates, your Android device may not support the latest update, or the update may not be available in the area/where you live
Step 6. Touch the UPDATE button
It's to the right of the Minecraft title. After that, Minecraft will update immediately.
Step 7. Wait for the update to finish downloading
Once you see the button OPEN ” To the right of the Minecraft title, you can play the updated version of Minecraft.
Method 4 of 6: On Xbox One
Step 1. Open My apps & games
This option appears on the Xbox One dashboard page.
Step 2. Select Games
It's in the upper-left corner of the screen.
Step 3. Select Minecraft
Scroll through the list of games until you find the Minecraft title, then make sure it's selected.
Step 4. Press the "Menu" button
It's to the right of the “Guide” button on the Xbox One controller. A new menu will be displayed after that.
Step 5. Select Manage games & add-ons
This option is in the menu. After that, the game page will open.
Step 6. Select the Updates tab
This tab is in the left pane of the screen.
Step 7. Select update
If the update does not download automatically, select it and press the “ A ” to download it.
If you don't see the update, the Minecraft you're running is the latest version available in your city/area
Step 8. Follow the instructions shown on the screen
Perform the prompts if prompted to confirm the update or select an installation location. Once the update is complete, you can play Minecraft as usual.
Method 5 of 6: On PlayStation 4
Step 1. Select Minecraft
Go to the game library (or search for Minecraft on the dashboard page), and move the selection box to select Minecraft.
Step 2. Press the OPTIONS button
It's an oval button in the upper-right corner of the control device. After that, a new menu will be displayed.
Step 3. Select Check for Updates
This option is in the menu.
Step 4. Select Go to [Downloads] when prompted
After that, you will be taken to the “Downloads” page and can see the download status of the update.
If you receive the prompt " The installed application is the latest version ", you cannot update Minecraft at this time
Step 5. Wait for the update to finish downloading
The download process takes a few minutes to several hours. After seeing the "Ready to install" message under the update, you can move on to the next step.
Step 6. Install the update
Select update, press the button “ X ”, and press the “button again X ” when the drop-down menu is displayed. After that, the update will immediately install to the PS4 hard drive.
You don't need to do anything while the update is being installed, but make sure you follow the instructions on the screen
Method 6 of 6: On Switch
Step 1. Select Minecraft
Go to the console's main page, then move the selection box until you select Minecraft.
The Minecraft cartridge must be loaded on the Nintendo Switch before you can select games
Step 2. Go to the “Options” page
Once the Minecraft option is selected, press the “ +" or " - ” to open the " Options " page.
Step 3. Select Software updates
This option is in the " Options " menu.
Step 4. Select Via the Internet
This option is in the pop-up window. After that, Minecraft will update immediately.
Step 5. Follow the prompts shown on the screen
If you get a permission request or a warning that more updates are available, follow the prompts as necessary.
