Tired of being a wallflower (as someone who just sits without dancing)? Read this article to learn how to relax and dance while having fun at a nightclub!
Step
Part 1 of 2: Relieve Your Nervousness
Step 1. Dress well
The better you feel about yourself, the more enjoyable your time will be on the dance floor. Wear your favorite clothes and make sure you wear something flexible. Stay away from clothes that are too tight or short, and wear comfortable shoes.
You should also consider the dress code of the nightclub; some clubs are more assertive than others
Step 2. Go with a group of friends
The more people you have with you, the more relaxed you will be on the dance floor. Plus, talking to friends will be a distraction so you don't focus on the fact that strangers are staring at you. Go to a nightclub with a group of excited, fun friends to have fun with.
Step 3. Understand the atmosphere
Before stepping onto the dance floor, wander around the club to get a feel for the atmosphere. Study your surroundings, watch other people dance, and get a feel for the music playing. Making yourself comfortable with your surroundings will take away some of the nervousness you might feel when you enter the club.
If you need to go to the bathroom to do your makeup or check your hair, do it before you hit the dance floor. This is useful so you don't get distracted while dancing
Step 4. Take a drink
You don't have to be drunk to have fun at the club, but consider stepping into a bar and sipping a drink while talking to your friends. Drinks will help you feel more relaxed, give you time to adjust to the club's circumstances, and maybe introduce you to new people!
Drink responsibly. While alcohol may relax you, getting drunk will only cause you problems and embarrass yourself
Step 5. Relax your muscles
If you are nervous about dancing, then your neck or shoulder muscles may be tense, and your knees may lock. This can cause your dance to feel and look very strange. Let these muscles relax. If that helps, go to the bathroom, take deep breaths, and shake your whole body to release tension.
Part 2 of 2: How to Dance
Step 1. Listen to the music
Instead of focusing on the type of movement you have to do, take the time to listen to the song playing and follow the rhythm. Once you find this rhythm, start pounding your head along with it. This will help you find a rhythm as you dance.
You'll have the most fun dancing to songs you know or like. If you're having trouble finding the beat of unfamiliar music, or if you don't like the music being played, it may be best to sit down until a song you like plays
Step 2. Find a location on the dance floor
If you're with a group of friends, let them surround you so you don't feel uncomfortable being watched by strangers. Let your body move naturally to the rhythm of the music. Pay attention to the rhythm of the song, and don't try to dance faster than the beat of the song.
- Start by stomping your head to the beat of the song and moving from side to side.
- Swing your hips back and forth.
- Take small steps from left to right as you dance.
Step 3. Pay attention to other people
If you're still feeling uncomfortable or running out of ideas, then look around the dance floor and look for some good dancers, who seem to know what they're doing. Pay attention to their style and rhythm, and imitate some of their moves. Make sure you're not watching someone too clearly.
Step 4. Smile
Create a display that says you're having fun! Smiling and laughing with friends will release endorphins in your body, so your dance will feel more natural and fun. Plus, you'll definitely look ridiculous if you dance with a frown or an uncomfortable expression on your face.
Sing along to your favorite songs to lift your spirits
Tips
- Remember that not everyone is paying attention to you. Nightclubs are usually dark and crowded, and, regardless of how you feel, most people probably won't even notice the way you dance. So, relax and have fun!
- Practice dancing at home, in front of the mirror. Turn on your favorite music, close the door and relax! The more comfortable you are with dancing alone, the more comfortable you will feel when you do it in public.
- Consider taking contemporary dance or hip-hop classes to help you learn the basics of club dancing.
