Step 2. Connect the controller to the computer

Insert the other end of the controller's USB cable that is used to charge it (the small end), and the large end of the USB cable into one of the USB ports on the computer.

  • The location of the USB port varies depending on the type of computer being used. If you can't find the location of the USB port, check the sides and back of the computer's CPU (desktop) or on the back of the case (laptop).
  • If you are connecting the controller via a wireless dongle, install the dongle driver first. Make sure you follow the on-screen guide after inserting the dongle.

Step 4. Click the "ScpToolkit_Setup.exe" link

This is the first link under the " Assets " heading on this page. Once done, the program will ask you to download to your PC's original download folder (for example, on your desktop).

Make sure you download the latest version of the software. If you're on an older version of the page, you won't see the green "Latest Release" sticker on the left side of the page

Step 8. Uncheck the “Install DualShock 4 Controller” box

This option is on the left side of the driver's installer window. Since you installed a PS3 controller (such as a DualShock 3 controller), you should not install a PS4 driver.

  • Also, uncheck the box next to "Bluetooth" if the controller is wired (i.e. you're not using a dongle).
  • By default, clear the checkbox next to anything that isn't being used.
  • If you are using Windows Vista, you need to check the box next to "Force Driver Installation" in the middle left side of the window.

Step 10. Check the “Wireless Controller” option

You will see a list of all the devices attached to the computer (eg keyboard, mouse, webcam, etc.) The PS3 controller is the option marked "Wireless Controller (Interface [number])" which is the number on the USB port to connect to the controller.

If you are using a wireless controller, you will need to select the USB device you are using to facilitate the connection under the "Bluetooth" section above the "DualShock 3 Controllers" drop-down box

Step 11. Click Install

On the right side of the driver installer window, which should take less than five minutes for all compatible PCs.

  • Once the pairing is complete, you will hear a confirmation sound.
  • At this point, the controller drivers will be installed and you are ready to use the PS3 controller in PC games.

Tips

  • This process can also be applied to a PS4 controller, but you will need to unpair the controller from within the PS4 settings. You will also need to install the DualShock 4 driver and select the DualShock 4 controller instead of the DualShock 3.
  • If you encounter an error, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the SCP toolkit. During the reinstallation process, make sure you have all the programs you need (even if you don't think you need them) and check the "Force Driver Installation" box when installing the drivers, regardless of your operating system.
  • When you open the "Devices" manager on your PC (type "joy.cpl" in the "Run" application to access it), the PS3 controller will appear as an Xbox 360 controller. PS3 doesn't.
