Try the different ways to bake potatoes in this tutorial and become a great potato cooker in no time.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Baking Whole Potatoes with Aluminum Foil
Step 1. Wash the potatoes
Wash the potatoes in cold water and use your hands or a soft sponge to remove the dirt.
Step 2. Prepare the potatoes
Remove any blemishes or green spots on the potatoes with a sharp knife or vegetable peeler.
Step 3. Dry the potatoes
With dry skin, potatoes will be tastier because they absorb oil, butter, and seasonings well.
Step 4. Prick the surface of the potato
Prick the surface of the potato skins with a fork before wrapping in aluminum foil. These holes will allow heat to flow into the potatoes to make them more ripe.
Step 5. Wrap the potatoes in aluminum foil
Tear off several sheets of aluminum foil according to the number of potatoes to be cooked and then wrap tightly. Make sure all the potatoes are wrapped.
You can also wrap the potatoes by rolling them in aluminum foil and twisting the edges tightly or folding the potatoes in aluminum foil and folding the edges
Step 6. Place the potatoes on the grill
Turn on the grill and set the heat to high. Place the wrapped potatoes on the grill. Place the potatoes close together on the hottest part of the grill.
If you're roasting a lot of potatoes, you can stack them and place them on the grill where they are hottest. When the potatoes at the bottom of the pile have started to bake, you can turn the potatoes over
Step 7. Cover and bake
Cover the grill and bake the potatoes for 40 minutes. If you're baking a lot of potatoes, turn them over during the roasting process. If it's your first time cooking with this method, you can bake the potatoes faster and check (unwrap the aluminum foil with tongs as the steam will be very hot). If the potatoes are still not cooked through, wrap them again in aluminum foil and bake for a few minutes.
- If the potatoes are charred but not yet cooked on the inside, place them back on the grill but away from the hottest part and then cover the grill.
- Baking time depends on the heat of the roaster and the size of the potatoes. In general, when grilling with the grill closed, the wrapped potatoes take about 30 to 45 minutes to cook.
- In the last 5-10 minutes of baking, you can unwrap the aluminum foil on the potatoes and return to baking them unwrapped. This process will brown the potato skins.
Method 2 of 4: Baking Whole Potatoes without Aluminum Foil
Step 1. Wash the potatoes
Wash the potatoes in cold water to remove any dirt. Scrub the potatoes with a soft sponge to clean them.
Step 2. Prepare the potatoes
Remove any brown or green parts. Use a sharp knife or vegetable peeler to remove any defects.
Step 3. Dry the potatoes
Dry the potatoes so the spices can absorb well.
Do not pierce the potatoes unless they are wrapped in aluminum foil. This will dry out the potatoes as they lose moisture
Step 4. Brush the potato skins with oil
This will prevent the potatoes from sticking to the grill and also make the potato skins crunchy.
To make a nice spread, combine the oil with a little butter, salt, pepper, and garlic in a small bowl
Step 5. Pin the potatoes with a metal skewer
Baking potatoes will be easier if they are pinned with a skewer. Pin 3 to 4 potatoes with a skewer or according to the size of the potato.
If you like, potatoes can also be placed directly on the grill
Step 6. Place the potatoes on the grill
Place the embedded potatoes away from heat sources.
Step 7. Bake the potatoes
With indirect heat, bake the potatoes for 30 to 40 minutes covered. Slowly roll the potatoes towards the heat source.
Method 3 of 4: Making Potato Wedges or Potato Slices
Step 1. Wash the potatoes
Wash the potatoes in cold water and clean with a soft sponge.
Step 2. Remove the defective part
Almost all potatoes have green or brown parts. Remove any defects with a sharp knife or vegetable peeler.
Step 3. Peel and soak the potatoes (optional)
Peel and remove potato skins with a vegetable peeler or sharp utility knife. Peel off all the skins of the potatoes and remove any green or blemished parts. When peeled, immediately soak the potatoes in cold water until the potatoes are ready to be cooked or cut according to taste.
- Cold water prevents the surface of the potatoes from turning discolored.
- Be careful when peeling potatoes so as not to hurt your hands.
Step 4. Cut the potatoes
Cut the potatoes lengthwise 1 cm to 1.5 cm thick. Slice the potatoes to make potato wedges or cut them into small chunks.
Step 5. Brush the potato wedges
Immediately brush the potatoes with oil and seasonings.
- Brushing the potatoes with oil and seasoning can prevent them from burning and sticking to the sides of the grill.
- To make a nice spread, combine the oil with a little butter, salt, pepper, and garlic in a small bowl.
Step 6. Place the potatoes on the grill
Place the potatoes in the center of the grill with the cut side down. If the potatoes are cut into small chunks, they can be lined with aluminum foil or pinned with a skewer before baking to prevent the potatoes from falling off the sides of the grill.
Step 7. Bake the potatoes
Set the grill heat to medium and bake the potatoes for 5 to 6 minutes then flip the potatoes over. Bake for 5 to 6 minutes then flip again so that the crust is on the bottom. Bake potatoes until tender. The potato wedges will be browned. Serve while hot.
Method 4 of 4: Seasoned Baked Potato
Step 1. Season the potatoes before baking
You can try seasonings like olive oil and coarse salt, ground pepper or red chili flakes, and spices like rosemary, thyme, or sage.
You can also try garlic, butter, salt, or whatever you like
Step 2. Make the sauce and coat the potatoes before baking
Try mustard, mayonnaise, and seasonings. Save the sauce to use as a dip for the baked potatoes.
Step 3. Make the dry spices
Coat the potatoes with olive oil before seasoning with your favorite dry seasoning. Season the whole potato side.
If desired, use salt, cumin, coriander, paprika, chili powder, allspice, ground pepper, and dry thyme with 1-1/2 teaspoons salt and a little sugar
Step 4. Add other vegetables
If grilling in a packet, you can add chopped vegetables to the same packet for a unique flavor combination. Slices of onions, carrots, or pumpkin are great combinations of vegetables to bake with potatoes.
Tips
- Sweet potatoes are also great for baking, whether wrapped in aluminum foil or not.
- Make potato wedges wrapped in aluminum foil for individual servings. This can make it easier for guests to remove the potato wrap from the grill.
- To get a crispy skin on whole potatoes, remove the baked potato from the aluminum foil after 20-30 minutes then place it back into the oven unwrapped and re-bake for the last 10 minutes of baking time.
- To speed up the roasting process, cook whole potatoes halfway through for 10 minutes and then bake for 5-10 minutes.
- You can also speed up the baking process by heating the potatoes in the microwave for 2-4 minutes each side (without the foil) before baking for another 5-10 minutes.
