The term muesli comes from the German word used to describe a mixture of rolled oats, seeds, nuts, and dried fruit. For those of you who are on a diet program, muesli is the right food choice because it is healthy, filling, and rich in fiber. Interested in eating it but worried it won't taste good? Don't worry, this article provides creative tips and tricks for making muesli so you can still eat well even if you're on a diet!
Step
Method 1 of 2: Common Ways to Eat Muesli
Step 1. Eat muesli like you would any cereal, as muesli is basically considered part of the 'cereal family'
The most common way is to add half a glass of milk to a bowl of muesli, just as you would a bowl of cereal.
- Replace the milk with your favorite plain yogurt (or fruit flavors if you want it sweeter). Besides being able to provide a different taste, yogurt is also healthier for your digestion.
- Heat the milk, pour the hot milk over the muesli, soak the muesli for a while until the texture becomes softer. This way, the muesli will taste almost like oatmeal. You can also place the muesli in a heatproof bowl, pour the cold milk into the bowl, and heat it in the microwave.
- Just like cereals, muesli can also be eaten as a snack.
Step 2. Add fresh or frozen fruit pieces
If you want your muesli to taste fresher, add your favorite fruit slices, either fresh or frozen. The ingredients below are delicious when paired with a bowl of muesli:
- Banana slices
- Blueberries, blackberries or raspberries
- Kiwi
- Strawberries (in addition to creating a sour kick, the strawberry seeds will give your muesli a nice crunchy texture)
- Crispy-fried pork skin (perfect for those of you who want a savory muesli)
- Apple slices
- Pear slices
- Mango slices
- Freshly flavored lychees with a sweet and sour taste are perfect when combined with muesli!
- Pomegranate seeds
Step 3. Try blending it with dried fruits
Sometimes your muesli will already contain a mix of dried fruit. But if it's still not enough, try adding the following fruits to make your muesli even more delicious:
- Cranberries
- Apricot
- Goji berries
- Raisins
Step 4. Soak the muesli overnight
One of the most common ways to soften the texture of muesli is to soak it overnight in milk, yogurt, or your favorite solution. Place the same amount of muesli and milk in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a lid, and chill in the refrigerator overnight. The next day, your muesli will taste like a very tasty cold porridge for breakfast.
You can also soak it in coconut milk. Coconut milk imparts a subtle sweetness to your muesli. If you don't like the taste or smell of coconut milk, you can mix it with a little milk
Step 5. Sprinkle muesli into your smoothie
If you prefer smoothies to cereals, add muesli to your smoothie or just sprinkle it on top. Besides being healthier, the different textures produced by muesli combine deliciously with smoothies. Try the recipe below to create an amazingly delicious glass of smoothie:
- Handful of frozen strawberries or your favorite frozen fruits
- 375 ml yogurt
- 175 gr grated coconut
- 2 tbsp muesli
Step 6. Mix with applesauce
If you can't eat lactose, or want to eat muesli in a unique way, you can mix it with applesauce. Choose applesauce that has no other added ingredients, or make your own applesauce.
Step 7. Cook the muesli until it becomes mush
Many people don't like muesli because it has a different texture to regular oatmeal. If you still want to get the nutrients from the muesli but don't like the texture, you can cook it first until it becomes mush.
- Boil as much milk and water as you want, add muesli in equal proportions. In other words, if you want to make one cup of muesli porridge, heat one cup of water and one cup of milk and add one cup of muesli to it.
- Lower the heat, cover the pot and cook the muesli for 10-15 minutes. Stir several times until you reach the desired consistency. Serve.
Step 8. Try soaking the muesli in a coffee or juice solution
This may sound strange, but orange juice, apple juice, or even coffee are other lactose-free blends that go well with muesli. Make a bowl for your breakfast menu, and be prepared to be surprised by its amazingly delicious taste!
Method 2 of 2: Making Your Own Muesli Mix
Step 1. Try Bircher-Benner's original recipe
Muesli was created by a Swiss doctor named Maximilian Bircher-Benner. Modern muesli recipes contain more wheat than fruit. In fact, Benner's original muesli recipe actually contained more fruits and nuts. Here is a Benner recipe that you can try at home:
- 1 tbsp rolled oats, soaked in 2-3 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp cream
- 1 large apple sour taste, grated and mix just before serving
- 1 tbsp hazelnuts or crushed almonds for sprinkling
Step 2. If necessary, add sweetener
For some people, the taste of muesli is quite bland. Add enough sweetener to suit your taste. You can use the following ingredients as a natural sweetener or flavor enhancer:
- Honey
- Molasses
- Brown sugar
- Cinnamon
- Roasted coconut
- Lemon juice
- Agave syrup
- Maple syrup
- Nutmeg
Step 3. Briefly bake the muesli in the oven
If you want muesli with a crispier texture, you can bake it for about 30 minutes, or until it turns brown. Add a little coconut oil or melted butter to make the color prettier.
Step 4. Make the muesli bars
The best way to eat muesli anywhere is to turn it into muesli bars. Mix the muesli with a few tablespoons of peanut butter, adding other ingredients like dried fruit, nuts, and cereal if you like.
- Pour the dough into a tin with a thickness of 0.5 cm, cool in the refrigerator. Once cool, remove the muesli from the refrigerator, cut into desired pieces. You can eat it right away or store it in the refrigerator for as long as you want.
- If you don't like peanut butter, you can replace it with a mixture of honey and melted butter.
Step 5. Add the muesli to the cake batter
Muesli can be used as a substitute for oatmeal in a variety of cake recipes. Cookies, muffins and even pancakes will become healthier and tastier in no time if you add a pinch of muesli to them. Replace oats with muesli in these recipes:
- Pastry
- Pancake
- Cake
- Muffins
