Slushie is the perfect cold treat to keep you cool on a hot day. The only ingredients you need to make slushies are ice, sugar, flavorings and food coloring. The quickest way to make slushies is to use a blender, but the texture of the slushies will be smoother if you have an ice cream maker. You can also make slushies with just the freezer.
Ingredients
Slushie Blender
- 200 grams sugar
- 475 ml water
- 400 grams of ice
- 1 1/2 tsp food flavor extract
- 5 to 10 drops of food coloring
Slushie with Ice Cream Maker
- 200 grams sugar
- 950 ml cold water
- 1 1/2 tsp food flavor extract
- 5 to 10 drops of food coloring
Slushie Freezer
- 200 grams sugar
- 950 ml cold water
- 1 1/2 tsp food flavor extract
- 5 to 10 drops of food coloring
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using Blender
Step 1. Dissolve 200 grams of sugar in 240 ml of water
Dissolving the sugar before starting to make the slushie will help prevent the slushie from getting a grainy texture. Pour the sugar and water into a bowl and stir until you no longer see any sugar grains.
Step 2. Mix the sugar water with 400 grams of ice
Just pour the sugar water into your blender and add 400 grams of whole ice cubes. This method works best if your blender is powerful enough to grind the ice cubes into a fine powder, resulting in a classic slushie texture.
- You may want to try grinding a few ice cubes to make sure the blender can smooth them out; If the blender is not able to grind the ice cubes, try another method of making slushies.
- If you like a thinner slushie, add another 120 ml of water. If you like a thicker slushie and a lot of ice, reduce the water by 120 ml.
Step 3. Add flavor and color
To mimic a classic slushie, add 1½ teaspoons of your favorite flavoring extract (such as raspberry, strawberry, lemon, lime, coconut or vanilla) and 5 drops or more of food coloring. Use a long-handled spoon to mix all these ingredients together. You can add a little more flavor extract or coloring to taste.
- Do you like soda-flavored slushies? Make this slushie by freezing your favorite soda to make ice cubes. Replace water and ice cubes with cold soda and soda ice cubes, and don't add sugar.
- You don't have time to buy flavoring extracts? You can use a packet of Kool-Aid powder instead of flavoring and food coloring.
Step 4. Blend the mixture on high speed
This process can take a few seconds or a few minutes to get a slushie texture, depending on the power of your blender. Continue to blend the mixture until the ice has disintegrated and the mixture has become thick.
- Stirring the mixture periodically with a long-handled spoon can help make the ice spin.
- If your blender isn't very powerful, transfer the mixture to a food processor and grind in turns.
Step 5. Taste the slushie
If you are satisfied with the taste, thickness and sweetness level, the slushie is ready. Add more sugar, flavoring, or food coloring to match the taste of the slushie. If you add extra ingredients, make sure you process the slushie in a blender until smooth.
Step 6. Enjoy your slushie
Divide the mixture into several glasses and drink through a straw for a true slushie sensation. This recipe is enough to make two large servings or four small servings of slushies.
Method 2 of 3: Using an Ice Cream Maker
Step 1. Dissolve 200 grams of sugar in 950 ml of water
Pour the sugar and water into a bowl and stir until you can no longer see any sugar grains. This step will enhance the texture of your slushie.
Step 2. Mix the flavor extract and food coloring
Use 1½ teaspoons of your favorite flavoring extract and 5 to 10 drops of food coloring to suit that flavor. The flavor and color combinations below make for an eye-catching delicious slushie:
- Raspberry extract and blue food coloring
- Combination of cherry and vanilla extract with red food coloring
- Combination of lemon and lime extracts with green food coloring
- Orange extract with orange food coloring.
Step 3. Process the mixture in your ice cream maker for 20 minutes
Since you don't want the slushie mixture to freeze as hard as ice cream, simply pour the mixture into the ice cream maker and cook for about 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, check the slushie mixture to see if it's the right consistency, and continue processing if necessary.
Step 4. Pour your slushie mixture into the glass using a spoon
This recipe will make enough to make two large servings or four small servings of slushies. Enjoy your slushies with a straw for that classic slushie sensation.
Method 3 of 3: Using the Freezer
Step 1. Dissolve 200 grams of sugar in 950 ml of water
Pour the sugar and water into a bowl and stir the mixture until the sugar is no longer visible. This way your slushie won't feel rough after it freezes.
Instead of a combination of sugar and water, you can use 950 ml of your favorite drink. Try making slushies out of any type of soda, fruit juice, chocolate milk, and even coffee
Step 2. Mix the flavor extract and food coloring
You will need 1½ teaspoons of food flavor extract and 5 to 10 drops of food coloring. Taste the mixture and add or subtract the ingredients according to your taste.
- If you want a creamy slushie, add a tablespoon or two of cream. This ingredient goes especially well with citrus or vanilla flavored extracts.
- To make your slushie a little more interesting, try adding a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice and a teaspoon of lemon zest.
Step 3. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan
The sides of the pan should be a few centimeters high so the liquid won't spill out.
Step 4. Cover the pan with plastic wrap
You can also use a lid if your pan has a lid.
Step 5. Freeze the mixture for two hours, stirring every 30 minutes
Each time you stir, you will crush the frozen ice that has formed. Over time, this will result in a classic slushie texture. After doing this step for about 3 hours, your slushie should usually be ready.
Step 6. Pour the slushie mixture into the glasses using a spoon
This recipe is enough to make two large and four small slushies. Enjoy your delicious drink concoction.
Tips
- Always taste your mixture to make sure it's sweet enough and full of flavor before freezing it.
- If you don't have a blender and don't want to wait two hours for your slushie mixture to freeze in the freezer, use a smoothie maker instead because it works pretty much the same way. However, the texture of the resulting slushie will be slightly different.
Warning
- Don't put too much ice in the blender, because it won't work. You may have to work your slushie in sections, taking turns.
- Don't use a smoothie maker unless it's REALLY necessary, because the ice cubes will dissolve into the sugar water.
