Rice glue is widely used in Japanese paper art, especially in the manufacture of kanzashi. Rice glue dries hard and is almost transparent making it suitable for use in paper crafts. You can buy rice glue at oriental supermarkets, or make your own at home. This article will guide you through making rice glue, which you can then store in a container in the refrigerator.
Ingredients
For two cups of glue.
- 1 cup rice (if possible, use sticky rice, such as basmati or sushi rice)
- 3-4 cups of water
Step
Step 1. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan, then bring to a boil
Step 2. Lower the stove temperature, then cook for 45 minutes
Step 3. Check the texture of the glue
Once cooked, the texture of the glue will change, approaching the texture of oatmeal or porridge. If the texture of the glue still resembles rice, add some water and cook again.
Step 4. Once the glue is shaped like oatmeal, remove the glue from the pan and let it cool
Step 5. Strain the glue through a coarse sieve to remove large particles
You can also blend the glue, but before blending, you may need to add a little water. After filtering or blending, pour the glue into the storage container.
Step 6. Store the glue in the refrigerator, and use it as needed
Apply glue to the surface with a brush.
