Have you encountered any unwanted little geckos in your home? One sign of the presence of a gecko is the presence of black/brown droppings with white spots on it. A clearer sign is if you see him crawling on the wall! While useful because they prey on insects and spiders, geckos can become pests in your home. So sometimes you have to take some steps to get rid of your gecko from your home.
Household Solutions
Geckos make great pest control, but sometimes you want to get rid of them from your home. You can use a variety of products that you may already have to get rid of them:
- When you have eggshell, place the egg shells around the house to scare the gecko.
- When you have camphor, place this material around the house to repel geckos.
- When you have tobacco and coffee, make gecko poison using these two ingredients.
- When you have garlic, the pungent smell can be used to repel geckos.
- When you have Red onion, cut a few red onions to prevent the arrival of geckos.
- When you have red pepper or Tabasco sauce (a brand of chili sauce), you can make your own pepper spray.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Getting Rid of Geckos from Home
Step 1. Place some egg shells
This is a very effective and inexpensive way to scare away geckos. The gecko will see the egg shell and consider it a "predator". Place two pieces of eggshell around the house, for example in the driveway to the house, or in the kitchen.
- Do not break the eggshell, let it remain in the form of two parts.
- All you have to do is place a pair of broken eggshells at each entrance. Geckos walking to the entrance will run away when they see the eggshell.
- To keep the eggshells from smelling, replace them with new ones every 3 to 4 weeks.
Step 2. Place some amount of mothballs
Camphor can be used to repel moths, ants, cockroaches, flies, and geckos! This is a very potent household ingredient! Place some mothballs under the stove, refrigerator, or sink to repel geckos.
Step 3. Install the glue trap
Most insects that geckos prey on are attracted to light, so geckos are often in the area. Besides being able to catch insects that are a source of food for the gecko, placing a paper fly trap near a light source will also catch the gecko itself.
- A good position to place flytrap paper is on the inside of a lampshade or hood.
- You can also place a glue board or sticky card near a window or other entryway.
- If a gecko is caught in your trap, free the gecko from the trap by pouring vegetable oil on the trap and releasing the gecko. This is disgusting, but human!
Step 4. Make small balls of coffee and tobacco
Make small balls using wet coffee grounds and tobacco powder, then stick them on the end of a toothpick. Place this ball in a place where your gecko nests or anywhere that geckos frequent, such as your driveway. The gecko will eat some of the ball and die.
Step 5. Place the garlic
Besides being annoying to some people, the pungent smell of garlic is also not liked by geckos! Place a few cloves of garlic around the entrance of the house to prevent geckos from entering the house through that way.
Step 6. Use onion slices
Sliced onions are another irritant that can repel geckos. Cut the onion in half and place it where the gecko usually hides, in a warm and comfortable place for the gecko, or near the entrance to the house.
Step 7. Sprinkle pepper spray around the house
The irritation felt by humans when exposed to pepper spray is the same as that experienced by geckos. Mix pepper with water in a spray bottle and spray the solution around the house, such as under the refrigerator, behind the sofa, or on the walls. Anyway, in any warm place or anywhere you've come across a gecko.
- You can also use chili powder instead of pepper.
- You can also use Tabasco sauce instead of homemade pepper spray.
- Warning: overspraying can irritate "you" yourself, so watch out for the irritating effect.
Step 8. Catch the gecko, and release it elsewhere
If you can't get the gecko out of your house, try catching it manually by placing a box against the wall and "pushing" the gecko inside. Then you can release them in the wild and place repellents to keep the geckos from re-entering your home.
Method 2 of 3: Prevent Geckos From Entering Your House
Step 1. Make your home an uncomfortable place for geckos
Geckos like warm environments, water, and places to hide. Do a few things to make your home an uncomfortable place for your gecko.
- Keep your house clean by always sweeping the floor and not piling various items around the house, such as laundry, boxes, newspapers, and so on.
- Leave a distance of about 15 cm between the furniture and the wall and do not hang too many pictures. Geckos are nocturnal (active at night) and like warm, dark places to hide during the day.
- Set the thermostat (temperature control device) to the lowest possible temperature. Geckos like a warm and humid home environment when it's cold at night.
- If there is a leak in a faucet, pipe, or other area that could create a puddle in a humid environment, fix it and drain it, as geckos are attracted to this environment.
Step 2. Make your backyard an uncomfortable place for geckos
The backyard can be a place that attracts geckos if it provides comfort to the animal, namely when insects, water, and a covered area are available. Some things you can do to make your backyard less attractive to your gecko include:
- Get rid of anything that could cause the water to stagnate, such as a bird bath, as this can be a breeding ground for insects that geckos prey on and a source of water for geckos.
- Don't over-water your lawn, as geckos love a humid environment and drink the water to keep them hydrated.
- Do not plant succulents (plants with thick fleshy stems and leaves to store fluids). If there is no water to meet the needs of fluids, the gecko will bite the plant to survive.
- Prune bushes, especially those near the house, as geckos can use them to hide.
- Place the mosquito net over the bush to prevent the gecko from using it as a hiding place.
- Don't overdo it when you use lights outdoors, as they can attract insects that gecko can eat. If you must use the lights outdoors, try using sodium vapor or yellow lights.
Step 3. Make sure you have closed all the gaps in the house
Geckos can flatten their tiny bodies to fit into small crevices and holes, so make sure you seal all the gaps in your home properly. Walk around the inside and outside of the house and cover any gaps you come across with caulk and make sure all windows and vents are properly screened.
Method 3 of 3: Getting Rid of the Gecko's Food Source
Step 1. Eliminate mosquitoes, flies and gnats
This pest likes water that does not flow because it is used as a breeding ground. Remove or cover any object or area that creates puddles.
- Cover recyclable cans and containers.
- Do not leave the glass filled with water for a long time.
- Do not allow water to remain standing in the tub or sink.
Step 2. Get rid of the ants
The smell of vinegar can be used to repel ants. So, you can spray or sprinkle white vinegar around door and window frames to keep ants from entering your home.
In addition, make it a habit to do cleaning after you eat food. Dirty napkins, food crumbs, and dirty dishes can attract ants
Step 3. Get rid of fruit flies
Fruit flies love something sweet and can't stop themselves from eating it. So just give this animal what it wants: provide a cup or small bowl of white wine so the fruit flies get trapped and drown in them and never come back!
Step 4. Kill moths by suffocating them
Moths breed in a humid environment. One way that moths can't live comfortably is to hang chalk in the wardrobe. This can dry out your wardrobe and get rid of moths.
Step 5. Prevent the arrival of cockroaches
Cockroaches can eat a lot of things. However, there is one thing I don't like: cucumber skins. So don't throw away the cucumber skin when you peel it. Place cucumber peels around the tub or kitchen counter to prevent cockroaches from roaming around the house.
You can use borax if the cucumber skin attracts ants. Sprinkle some borax in places where cockroaches often move around. The cockroach population will drop dramatically in about a month. Contrary to popular belief, borax is less toxic to pets and humans
Step 6. Prevent the presence of spiders
Spiders can appear for no reason. However, apart from getting rid of these insects, there are a number of ways to prevent them from entering your home. Some of the ways you can do this include:
- Close the gaps that lead to the outside of the house, for example around doors and windows.
- Trap unwanted spiders by placing glue boards in litter boxes, basements, bathrooms, and kitchens.
- If the spider attack is severe, you may need to spray the insect with spider insecticide or contact a professional exterminator.
Step 7. Reduce the cricket population
Crickets are a type of food that geckos love so much that you should limit their population both indoors and outdoors to prevent geckos from coming to your place.
- Prepare a bowl filled with molasses (or beer) diluted with water to get rid of crickets inside and outside the house. The crickets will jump into the bowl!
- Keep the grass in your yard short as crickets breed in tall grass.
Tips
- You can use WD40 spray to prevent geckos from getting inside the air conditioner (although this is not an eco-friendly material). Spray around the base of an outdoor air conditioner.
- Geckos are nocturnal and hide under/under appliances and furniture during the day, so you'll likely see them a lot at night.
Warning
- Do not use camphor when pets and children are in the house as it is toxic.
- Borax is toxic to humans and pets, so don't kill cockroaches with this method if you have children and pets in the house!
